I love John Lennon and Layne Staley, two of my favorite singers. They share a certain vulnerability in their voice, a common thread to all great singers. Layne was like a darker shade of John.
WendyCR72 John Lennon was the originator of this damn fine song. Which means he wrote it & sang it FIRST! I love this version, but let's give John Lennon, his props, too
m f but what he's saying is there's a deluxe version of the cd/vinyl that includes a couple bonus tracks. Was repressed and released in 2013 I believe.
God I love Layne typically just his voice overall and looks didnt hurt a thing either but my God the way he say "mama" ... I think if he would have called me "mama" like that or even sung this to me, I would have literally fainted....geeze....just so much damn sexiness all over this shit....damn miss you layne every fucking day..........rip!!!!!!!

Susan Staley-Simpson, Hey girl you have to have a great year, just because its in the cards + I'm not starting a new deck! You stick to your guns + we'll be praying for you everyday till we see a Happy + well Susan!!!
Mad Season is my favorite super group. Pearl Jam, AIC and Screaming Trees is a awesome combo. And then throw in a bad ass sax player and you got something amazing.
His voice was so clear on the Mad Season songs. Compare it to the last album he did with Alice where just about every song has voice distorted or buried under other such effects. He sounds so young here too. I know it's Kurt who usually gets the John Lennon comparison and maybe it's apt for how they were both looked to as the "voices of their generation" but to me, as a huge John Lennon fan, Layne is a lot closer to John it terms of vocals as both possessed the rare ability of being able to take all the pain and anger they lived with and project it through their vocals. They also both employed a "warts and all" approach in their lyrics where they laid themselves bare for the world to see. All their pain, insecurities, and struggles were expressed every time they recorded their music and that's a big reason why people still relate to their music and look up to them.
I would like to analyze what you wrote there. Alice In Chains are a very different band from Mad Season, sonically. The production has always been very different. Mad Season don't seem to have done much overdubs, not even on the vocals, but AIC has Layne and Jerry singing harmonies, and both of those guys' vocals have been overdubbed. So it's not strange that you feel that Layne's voice sounds clear in Mad Season. It was a different approach to recording. On Layne's last AIC album, there's distortion (let's call it "telephone effect") on Layne's vocals in the following songs, but only during the verse or overdubs in the verses, or only during the chorus: - Grind (only on overdubs) - Head Creeps (during verse; also, there seems to be some sort of sublte, almost detuning chorus effect on the vocals during the songs chorus) - Again (during chorus) - Heaven Beside You (during chorus; a bit of the "telephone effect" on Jerry's voice) The vocals are basically clean on the rest of the songs: - Brush Away (a lot of overdubs) - Sludge Factory (the vocals feel a bit "boxy"? I guess it's all about EQ and compression.) - Shame In You (pretty compressed and "boxy") - God Am - So Close - Nothin Song - Frogs (mostly clean vocals, except for the spoken part at the end) - Over Now Yeah, I guess the overall theme of the clean vocals on that album is that they're heavily compressed and a bit "boxy", for lack of a better word. The music is heavier and more "produced", with more overdubs. Compare it with Slipknot's Wait And Bleed. Overdubs make it so heavy. If it were just one vocal track, it would sound very thin, and the same goes for Alice In Chains. Mad Season is a different type of band, so having the vocals more bare fits much better. Take a listen to only the vocal track on Wait And Bleed. It's really good! And if you're a bit of a recording, production and studio nerd, you'll enjoy it. :) th-cam.com/video/p0n2QKVQzMQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ToFlameALand And then listen to a compilation of Alice In Chains songs with only vocals. It's interesting how much overdubs they always had, and how much they used reverb as a creative too. Down In A Hole has pretty dry and bare vocals, though. It seems to be pretty unusual for AIC. On a side note, Layne actullay caughed a bit during the chorus of We Die Young. That raspy vocal wasn't easy even for him, it seems.
@@nedim_guitar GREAT analysis! You are spot on. Apples and oranges. Both fruits, both round, but very different from one another. AIC *was* the blending of those amazing harmonies, but its refreshing to hear Layne on his own so clearly! ❤🎤💔
I would make the argument for Kurt because he was way more of a songwriter then layne, and the “voice of a generation” statement isn’t really about vocal capacity
Amazing how a Lennon song transcends genres and eras of music... The Live at the Moore version is even better! Layne and John we miss you both very much. 💔😪
John Lennon recorded this song on 1971 for is "Imagine" album. "Mad Season" recorded the cover on 1995 for "Working Class Hero" a tribute album to Lennon.

Too epic!
Why is this version so hard to find compared to the live versions?? I love this so much
I also would like to know. It’s listed on Spotify but you can’t listen to it.
Because it’s a cover of a John Lennon song and his estate is very strict (and the entire Beatles estate for that matter).
You can find it also on the tribute album " working class hero"..with band like RHCp., candelbox , etc....
One of the most underrated/unheard.Madseason/Staley tracks of all time. And Layne lives on...
I’m in a Mad Season cover band. Too much fun.
His voice sounds on this album absolutely as it best.
John would have loved this.
this isnt available on spotify where I live, glad to hear the recording

Other way around dude; Lennon was apparently quite the misogynist by some accounts.... even to Yoko apparently?
They were both excellent at projecting their pain through their vocals. Very few others could do it quite like that.
Never knew this song existed as I don't have the deluxe album, man I've been missing out.
Harry Chilcott Its a cover of I don't wanna be a soldier by John Lennon. Its not on the album because its not a mad season song I think.
