You really have to appreciate how INSANELY optimized these phones were. This specific one is the HTC Tattoo, boasting a 528 MHz CPU, a whopping 256MB of RAM, and 512MB of internal storage. Despite that, it manages to have a decently responsive UI and (WAS) able to do most of the tasks most people do on their phones today. Incredible.
This phone was way beyond my phone in 2009
My first ever smartphone was an HTC Aria and I thought it was great for my small hands. Sad to see HTC is no longer making phones 😢 they did some cool innovations back then.

3:56 Fun fact i am still using Android Marshmallow since 2016 until 2023. Yeah i was using that straight because i love its UI. Android 5 and Android 6 line are my favorite versions.

Hah, this takes me back. I came here from some of your other videos, but found this one on your channel. This was my first smartphone back in the day, and was my daily driver for about two years. It seemed revolutionary to me at the time. Then again, y'know, first smartphone. If you're curious as to how I ended up with it, I was a broke law student, and this phone was something like $70 refurbished on Newegg.
The HTC hero was and still is my dream phone. I wish they’d bring it into a modern architecture

I had a HTC Hero and I knew someone that had a HTC Legend, basically a Hero with an aluminium unibody.
I still think that the HTC Sense launcher from 2009 looks good in certain way, kinda reminds me of Windows Vista
htc sense made sense on windows mobile, but it didn't make any sense on android
I had a Tatoo and used it as a backup phone until they shut down 3G last year. Still use my HTC One that I paid $600 for back in 2012 and it still works just fine.
I miss using my HTC Dream and HTC Desire. I know people disliked these branded home lsunchers, but HTC Sense UI was something else.
HTC was the maker of my first smartphone! I never knew about the tattoo but I would have wanted that! I did/do love customization!

The HTC Tatoo didn't just let you choose between different covers.. You could make your own! There was some online editor that HTC offered, that would let you design your own cover and then mail them to you, and it wasn't even expensive.

The Tattoo was never meant to be HTC's flagship product, in fact HTC was just shipping sense on almost all of their phones at that point in history. After launching the G1 and original Mytouch on tmobile in the states (forget what the international name of the Mytouch was) HTC like most other android manufacturers wanted a way to stand out so they developed sense, the tattoo was not htc's flagship nor really all that important of a phone at that time. It largely borrowed design language from the HTC touch (vogue was the board name for it) which was a windows mobile phone launched in 2007 down to still having a 2.8 inch resistive touch screen. HTC's flagship at that time was the Hero (which had a capacitive screen) and also the first phone launched with sense, variations of that device in the US looked different than the original but it was on sprint under the Hero name and the Droid Eris on verizon, the hardware was also similar to the mytouch 3G but that ran stock android. The other thing in your video that lacks a lot of context is the update window. Yes it only got upgraded to 2.2, but that was fairly normal at the time for a device that had launched with 1.6 in fact a lot of devices around that time were left at 2.1 (including the hero) even the EVO in the US launched with 2.1 and ended on 2.3 so I think the video falls short of that. Yes that was a short support cycle especially for a phone in 2024 at the time of writing this but there were a ton of factors at play there. Including also how fast ARM processors were improving at the time. This phone has a 528MHz single core processor, the EVO was a 1GHz a year later, then the following year was the first to have a dual core processor and the year after that featured a quad core processor. It was cool to see this phone again now but this review of it lacks a sufficient amount of context and a lack of understanding of android at the time. Sense went on to have a long storied life till HTC pulled largely out of the phone market.
Back in the day, I used to grow out my thumb nail and use that as a pseudo stylus for these resistive touch screens, back then capacitive touch screens are very rare
I actually use a Unihertz Titan Pocket, its really great. Has a keyboard, super small, runs the newest android updates

@@throow Probably because Asus sells them in low volumes, and Unihertz make low-end, low-quality phones that they can export them to very developed countries.

In my opinion sending text messages and making phone calls still important today. If you’re not into in social media a basic phone is just right for you.
I've had a Samsung capacitive touchscreen phone way back in 2010. It was hellllllllll. It was really hard to navigate and type messages but it was a breeze after I got used to it after a while. When I tried it again years later, I got frustrated and put it down lmao

This was more popular in Europe, along with the Samsung Europa, which was slightly smaller than the Tattoo.

I have a htc sensation t mobile and it started with android 2.3 (gingerbread) and now its running on android 4.0 ( ice cream sandwich) and it's stuck at android 4.0. and now im planing to buy a phone that has android 5.1 (lollipop)

What i really want to know is what hardware is in there, such as the processor and such.
If anyone's curious, I looked it up, and the specs of the phone are a 240 x 320 screen, 1,100mah battery, 3.15MP camera, 512MB storage with 256MB RAM, and it has an SD card slot, and a Snapdragon S1

I think before like Android 5 or 8. Software updates on Android devices where not a given. HTC being one of the wost offenders I knew at the time. Sometimes they'd promise a version update for a device and just never deliver.
Even if your phone got an update back then, it wasn't a given that your pos carrier would care enough to have the update certified for your device.
Nowadays I believe Google essentially forces vendors to issue updates. Luckily these old phones are one zip file downloaded from XDA away from being jail broken most of the time.
