Yeah, and some Finns don't ever want to move to Helsinki because there's too much audible and visible noise. They want to live somewhere where they can hear the cuckoo from 5km away and nothing else, and see stars and auroras without street lights ruining the possibility.

Oodi Library is simply incredible. There are sewing machines, poster printing, music studios with lots of instruments etc. The spiral staircase is full of words answering the question: who is the library for? (The words are funny and on Oodi's website there is a list of them in English!).

In Helsinki go to Sörnäinen metro station and you will not find peace when you see the drug addicts fighting. But central is quite peaceful and most of Helsinki. I live in Käpylä 2km from Sörnäinen and Käpylä is like Moomin valley. Nothing bad ever happens here. And no drug addicts.
I totally hear that! I lived in the Tenderloin in San Francisco and in Oakland, California for many years which makes almost any city look mild in comparison. I understand there are people struggling with addiction in Helsinki. It's very unfortunate and I hope something can be done before things get worse like they are in the states! You can ask or take hotel or hostel (room) where is blackout curtains. You can also call that hostel too and ask if you get next time when you visit. This time year we have nordic sun. Winter time its opposite sitsuation. Have you ever try sauna, and after sauna you swim lake, sea? And if you like, repeat that, and do it again. And last "round", after sauna, you wash yourself, and go one more time on the water, then you dry. Then you its 'real' after sauna time and you can drink lonkero, or something what you want. Its so relaxing. and you come totaly pure. Its our finns traditional and national way. Pineapple long drink its good too.

I don't know why they don't have black out curtains in the rooms?? It is essential even here in Helsinki. The sun is much worse in Lapland in summer. Hope you will come again in shoulder season when the sun is not so strong at night.
In the past when Incandescent light bulbs were used, this would have been quite dangerous, but it probably was a 5 W LED or something that doesn't generate much heat. Of course it is good to test with hand how hot the cloth gets to have peace of mind.
Many people don’t realize how wonderful Finland is because Finns themselves are nearly immune from braggadocio. (BTW I'm not Finnish, so I can say that) Quality of life, with all its content and creature comforts, abound in the capital city and beyond. Finland is indelibly linked with craftsmanship, creativity and style. Possibly the incredible and abundant access to, and inclusion of nature is the reason Finns are not only the happiest people in the world, but also helps to explain why living here is so good. Winter, like anything, is what you make of it! Come back and visit us again. You haven't lived until you've trekked for hours amid a Finnish forest to then enter a clearing as the evening sky is ablaze in a mesmerizing Aurora Borealis display!

You saw the very southern tip of the country. As it is quite large coutry the areas in the northern parts are very different. I am planning to move back to Finland soon. I still have a cabin in the Arctic, and i want to turn it into a mindfulness center when i am back there..
Anchorage, Alaska is just slightly more North than Helsinki, so you should get those light midnights during the summer there, as well. I have lived most of my life in Helsinki, and now I'm living in Turku, another Finnish city. My solution to how to sleep during the summer are good curtains. Many people think, that Helsink railway station is Art Deco, but it was built well before the Art Deco period, in 1912-1918, so it actually represents Art Nouveau.
I avoid Helsinki at all cost because it's too much of a bustling metropoly to my taste. Too many people who all talk too much. So it's rather interesting to see a foreigner's perspective to whom that place is peaceful. I could only see it as such maybe after living a few years in Istanbul or Tokyo.
Lovely. I enjoy movies (or videos) that depict a transformation from negativity to positivity. In this particular video, that transformation occurred when the thought "The last place I would have ever thought I’d visit" turned into appreciation.. This video reminds me to appreciate the blessings we often overlook. 🌟

I was only in Helsinki 2 days during my first ever visit and met some great people, enjoyed the city in the fall and throughout the rest of my trip through Europe I couldn't get over it. Frankly it was my first ever solo trip so I guess first destination holds something dear to me... anyways, I wanted to go back so badly that I got back home, went back to the restaurant I worked at and grinded my butt off to go back there, 6 months later, this time for a whole month. I was incredibly broke on that trip! And now I'm back here again, so far for over a week, for the 6th time. Summer has been great this year! When I first came here I was 18 and that was almost 10 years ago now, so a part of my feels like I somehow came of age during my times spent here. In total, I've spent about 8 months in the city/country. Would absolutely love to move here, but too bad I'm totally underskilled and under-educated (travel was always priority), but perhaps it'll happen some day!

Great to see your home town through visitor's eyes. You were lucky with the weather, it could have been a lot more chilly :) Finland is located at the same latitude as Alaska, so summer days are long. Fortunately, the climate is milder than in Alaska, but the winters are just as dark.

One of the reasons why I don't go away from Finland in May-July time are the light nights. I absolutely love them and never try to darken my room during the night. It feels lovely to know there is no darkness at all. You say that there is 4 hours of darkness - really no full darkness at all because the sun only sets slightly under the horizon. I learned to sleep in a sunny room already as a child, my bedroom was east facing and the light curtains in the room didn't even meet in the middle.

I think people adapt to that brightness of summer as well as to the darkness in the winter. I sleep with my bed to the window and rarely have curtains or shades blocking the sunlight even in summer. In winter it is different kind of peaceful and beauty in those islands and nature where you walked. 😊 And that original long drink. Fun trivia, it was created for 1952 Summer Olympics of Helsinki to be the official beverage. 😅
To be honest it is not as dark as you think. It's dark when it's dark but days are already getting longer in December and light hours are about the same as London already in March. And then summer is of course super light when you only have couple of hours during the night when it's dim. There is spring and there is autumn, it doesn't turn to winter immediately after summer so winter is definitely not 7 months. Winter might start in November but already in May Finland was hottest place in Europe this year for weeks with +25°C in Helsinki.
Come to Hämeenlinna if you want to see authentic small town life in Finland but not too far away from Helsinki (2h by train). Your video made me happy 😊

I was actually wondering how cool it must be to have less crazy and more balanced day/night contrasts in e.g. New England, or even southern Canada, compared to almost complete sunshine in the summer and full-on darkness in wintertime in Northern Europe. Living ¬400 km north of Helsinki, I tape my blackout curtains closer to the walls in the summertime to reduce light leakage :D
How's it living with that typical Finnish "the glass is always half empty" attitude? Why don't you try and see the good side of things. The place looks perfectly nice to me. You're probably also one of those people who think there is nothing good about Finland.
