  • Nollendorfplatz was severerly damaged by World War II bombing. Today, the plaza today is defined by the restored U-Bahn viaduct and the facade of the famous Neues Schauspielhaus theater. Motzstraße, in Berlin's south, is home to the annual Lesbian and Gay City Festival.
Nollendorfplatz has been a gay location since the turn of the 20th century, as described by Christopher Isherwood, W. H. Auden, Klaus Mann, and others. In Berlin's LGBT community, leather and darkroom bars are popular. Some characters in Joe Masteroff's Cabaret live there. A plaque near the U-Bahn station recalls homosexual persecution and the Holocaust.
