    For some reason, I read the title as *Bullying* the Altair. I thought, "how are you going to bully it - flip the front panel switches repeatedly in a mean way?"

    I will never understand why so many - MOST - people ruin otherwise helpful and educational videos by including “music” that is SO F’ING OBNOXIOUS (and mixed WAY TOO LOUD for this video), that the viewer has to turn the sound completely off, thus making the video FAR LESS USEFUL... PEOPLE! You DO NOT have to have music filling every gap between talking in your videos. Especially in this case, it would have been FAR BETTER to just have silence between talking. This literally gave me a headache, and I couldn’t watch the whole thing, and I really needed this info... Sheesh!

      Thank you for the feedback! I went back and watched this again, and I can see that if one isn't into 8-bit tunes (or music reminiscent of them), it would be a bit jarring. I hadn't intended the video to be instructional per se when I first made it, but now I think I should have made it that way.
      All that said, what info did you need? If it's something I can help with in the comments, let me know. I'd also be willing to take a look at my Final Cut Pro project and if it's in shape, I could upload a music-free version of this video.

      CrankyOldCuber ... That would be great! ... Still a great video, and I appreciate you making it. I’ve been looking for an Altair kit for quite a while, and this one is likely the one for me. I mainly wanted to see ease of assembly and getting it up and running, and it looks super easy. And oh yeah, I know all about 8 bit music, and this actually ISN’T. LOL! This is modern music on modern technology attempting to sound 8 bit. I still own all my gear (computers and synths) from as far back as 1980. I grew up in that era (and well, a couple decades before that). Even so, yeah, my suggestion would be, if using this music, just mix it a little lower, or use a high-ratio compressor plugin or a limiter so that the volume of the music isn’t SO much louder than your voice. As it is, viewing requires, at least, making constant volume adjustments between voice and music sections. This isn’t a factor of 8 bit music, but just a mix factor (which is one of the things I do for a living), and tweaking EQ... Thanks again for the video though. I at least know which product to get now (when they’re back in stock)...

      You probably already saw, but there's an improved kit now with a better case (blue and white acrylic instead of bamboo), and even a "pro" version with a bigger case (also blue and white acrylic). I actually ordered another pro, and it's currently sitting in my "kits-to-build" backlog.
      I'll see what I can do about uploading a music-less version of this video in the next few days, though, and let you know when I do. Thanks again for watching!

      Why are you such a Debbie Downer? The music was not so bad. Silence is golden but music is far from the end of the world. Heck I play music here all the time. When my PC is idle it runs a script that randomly plays music. It's kind of nice. Right now I am listening to Vivaldi - La Cetra 12 Violin Concertos Op.9

    • @SteveHacker
      @SteveHacker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1pcfred ... You’re way too late to this party. All has been discussed already. A YEAR ago! ... And Vivaldi is one thing, but having REALLY LOUD cheeseball music actively CRANK UP LOUD in every little gap of non-talking, then ducking during talking, is - sorry that you don’t have ears to notice - OBNOXIOUS AS HELL... That said, 8-bit music is great, and it’s my era, but even in its prime, audio COMPRESSORS were used. A simple compressor plug-in would/could have fixed this from literally raping my speakers (and ears) between every speaking part. Compressors and limiters smooth out stuff like this. I’m not a “Downer”. It’s called CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, and audio is WHAT I DO FOR A LIVING. It’s HOW PEOPLE IMPROVE... Still, in most cases like this, erring on the side of NO MUSIC, or very faint background music is usually better. The biggest and most successful channels, in fact, follow that exact advice... You’re welcome for the advice from a full time audio professional...

    This guy needs to discover Blue tack.

    • @CrankyOldCuber
      @CrankyOldCuber  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is that something I could use instead of masking tape?

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CrankyOldCuber yes. Blue tacky is just generally handy stuff to have on the workbench. It has uses beyond holding parts on boards to solder them. Be warned blue tacky can get funny if you really overheat it. Generally it works pretty good though. You get it wherever they sell stationary supplies. It is office stuff. The original "Blu Tack" is pretty expensive. 75g for $6 Knock offs are considerably cheaper. I wonder if the original is any better? The stuff I have is Office Depot house brand. And who doesn't love just pulling tacky apart? It's right up there with popping bubble wrap!

      That would be an awesome Christmas gift. There's also a PDP-8 and a PDP-11 clone made by the same guy; I have the PDP-8, but I haven't put it together yet.

    Is there a version of forth?

      @CrankyOldCuber  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there must be; the machine runs CP/M and I am almost certain there was a Forth for that.

    Cool. Can you do "simon says"? And what was it about star trek?

    • @CrankyOldCuber
      @CrankyOldCuber  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the Star Trek game I was talking about: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_(1971_video_game)
      I'm not sure about the "simon says" reference; was there a game called that?

    • @nywf1824
      @nywf1824 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool. I never knew it existed.
      The simon says i meant was for you to code it in. A random set of light comes up in certain order and you have to replicate to move next level. You lose when you fail to replicate say within 1 min and it resets.
      Also if possible to code, another simple game could be flicking the switches to get all lights on to win. Flicking a switch can either light up 1 or more bulbs or undo the lights.

    • @CrankyOldCuber
      @CrankyOldCuber  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh! Pretty much one of these: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_(game)
      Confession: I haven't written any code for it yet, other than trivial BASIC programs. I need to get my video backlog to a decent state so I can actually sit down and mess with it some more.

    can you toggle in the programs like kill the bit or do you have to load it up like that thanks

    • @CrankyOldCuber
      @CrankyOldCuber  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can do that. It's just as tedious to do that as it was on the original, but possible. However, it has an SD card with a bunch of software on it, so you can play several games right after booting it up, or you can easily boot CP/M (but you have to connect a terminal to use it, which is pretty easy).
      It's a pretty nifty machine.
