I made a granny square afghan from left over yarn from constantly making my girls mittens. When one of my daughters was about 50, her best friend’s house burned down and he lost the granny square afghan his grandmother had made for him. He was so upset. I gave him mine. I couldn’t believe how grateful he was.

I have several afghans that my Grandmother made me when I was a baby and child, but none of them were a Granny Square. She used to love to stitch while watching baseball. Such wonderful memories! Your afghans are beautiful!

My Mom taught me how to crochet when I was about 7 years old. When I was in high school, she gifted me a crocheted granny square afghan that she had worked on everyday while I was in school. She would pin up the pieces behind her bedroom door on a sheet and make sure that no 2 blocks were the same. She set them with a dark forest green...and yes, it is one of my all time favorite treasures!

I have a granny square quilt my mother made for me in the 70’s. I keep having to repair it but it’s one of those things I treasure. I’ve made a few squares with Lori Holt’s granny square journey and turned them into a pillow for my sewing chair and a pin cushion.

My grandmother made lots and lots of the granny square afghans and gave them to all of us. Ours was on our sofa for years! Then is was on my dad’s Lazy Boy for more years. You can’t wear them out! Ours was crocheted together with black yarn and I’m not sure but I believe she used wool yarn, so it is very warm. That fabric is so fun and brings back so many memories doesn’t it? Thanks for sharing yours, Pat.

I have a bed size granny square afghan with matching window valances my mother made with white connecting yarn and multicolor yarns otherwise from bits and pieces of yarn. When she was dying, her neighbor told me I was to get it, put it in my car before my sister arrived from out of state, and that it was made for me. It wreaked with cigarette smoke. Airing it didn't help so I had to send it to the cleaners to get ride of the smoke smell. It is very heavy to lift. I treasure it as I only have a couple of things she made.

On one of my trips to visit my favorite aunt, she taught me to crochet. Once I got the hang of the basic stitches, she showed me how to make Granny squares. When I finished the first one, it was a circle! So I tried again and again and again - all came out round. Needless to say, I gave up and so did she because I couldn't count my stitches correctly to get a square. It was a fun day regardless. Love your beautiful treasures.

Love your vintage granny square afghans! They are gorgeous. While in high school and early college years, my sister and I secretly crocheted granny squares to make our parents an afghan for the family room. The colors were orange, harvest gold, and avocado green! We finished all of the squares for their 20th wedding anniversary but didn't get them stitched together. When my mom opened the box, she exclaimed: "A lifetime of potholders!" We did stitch them together and the afghan was in the family room for many years! We self-taught ourselves to crochet and had many vests and ponchos to go with our blue jeans--which I embroidered on in the 1970s!

I do not crochet. But my Nannie did and she made an afghan like yours, multi colored with black background similar to yours. She used to have it on a red sofa. I kept that afghan until two years ago, it was moth eaten and broke my heart to throw it out. I wanted to repair it but it was too far gone. I’m sure it was 100 years old. I’m in my seventy’s.

One year for Christmas, my mom made for us children, crocheted afghans. She still has them 40 years later. OH MY STARS…THOSE GRANNY SQUARE AFGHANS 🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍At 51yrs old I’ve just taught myself how to crochet via TH-cam and the granny square is about all I know how to do. No one in my family did crochet but we had a Granny Square Afghan that is in several family pictures which is now my inspiration. My sister has that Afghan now since both parents are gone so we have no idea where it came from. I’ll have to share my pic on the FB page. And YES, now I need that Granny Square fabric🙌🏼👏🏼

I have made 2 Granny Square afghans. One set in dark brown that I made and got a 2nd place ribbon at the Nebraska State Fair in the 70s. Another I learned how to crochet with started by my Great Grandmother with very fine wool from back in her day. There was enough wool of all colors and the background to make a small one, it is a treasure.

These travels and adventures of Norm and Nanette are BRILLIANT! What a fantastic idea! I cannot WAIT to see where they go and what they do next!
I enjoy your showing fabrics and notions, too, like the Christmas layer cakes today!! I'm going to order some! These are things I can't find locally since my LQS closed. 😢. I just had 2 back surgeries this month so I'm not traveling ANYWHERE shopping for fabric 😂😂 (They were 2 parts, one the 3rd, and the second on the 17th) SO as they used to say, I'm letting my fingers do the walking and shopping🤣

I am moved to see that you are looking for extra fabric also. When I started this project I never gave a second thought to having fabric for sashings so consequently I was low or out of it when it came time to do that. Some of my blocks don't have matching sashing either. I just think like Lori Holt says, " you're the boss of your own quilt." I am fine with how my quilt looks and am thrilled that all the blocks are done. Mine are stored with all the rows clipped together so that I can just start sewing them.
