Dimension Hatross is definitely #2, but nothing can beat Killing Technology. Obviously the title track is incredible but Tornado, Overreaction, Ravenous Medicine, Too scared to scream. Those are all some of the best Voivod songs
@@magnuswettermark6085 I don't know if your doing Petes year by year best albums but .....1991 is my favorite year in music : Fates Warning Parallels , Voivod Angel Rat , Savatage Streets , Rush Roll the Bones and last but not least Helloweens Pink Bubbles Go Ape !!!! A big pile of my all time favorites in one year .
Angel Rat's art rock vibe might have turned off some fans, but it was a necessary phase in their development - without Angel Rat, there probably wouldn't have been an Outer Limits next. (It also had really cool album art. The zombie pirate [??] guy on the cover.)
Absolutely delighted to see you're doing voivod man!!... I'm not surprised you had to bring some other folks on! Thank you for putting your hands into the coals!
I think I loved all their albums pretty much from the start, except "Angel Rat" - which grew on me a lot after I got over the 'but it's not extreme!' initial shock - and the post-"Outer Limits" albums with Eric Forrest taking over vocals from Snake for a couple years, which I really didn't give a fair chance to. The band's entire discography is underrated, and each album really does have its own charm. And it's remarkable how consistent the band's output has been over the last 40 years: most bands who've been around this long have run out of steam at some point, or abandoned everything that made the band fun in some misguided attempt to stay relevant as the popularity of metal waned: Voivod dabbled a little in a little punk, or prog, or industrial depending on their mood, and might take a little adjustment from time to time to keep up with them, but they always sounded fresh without losing touch with what made Voivod Voivod: when I finally mixed some of those Eric Forrest Voivod songs into my playlist with a bunch of other music I didn't normally listen to, I instantly recognized Voivod songs I hadn't heard yet, only a couple riffs into the song... the vocals were unfamiliar, but the music was unmistakable and as comfortably weird and alien as anything the band has ever done.
Damn, nice to see Will doing well and back on his feet !!! Voivod is one of my top 10 fave bands woo hoo ! Nothingface Killing Technology Dimension Hatross The Outer Limits Angel Rat The Wake Phobos War and Pain Target Earth Rrroooaaarrr Voivod Katorz Negatron Infini Possibly the most unique band in metal !!!
Personally, my favorite is Angel Rat. I was so happy when they played The Prow when I saw them a few years back. I also really like Dimension Hatröss and The Outer Limits. NothingFace and Voivod would probably come next, after that it's pretty interchangeable. And on a side-note, I totally love Death Angel, what a great band. They just keep getting better and better. Glad to see Will healthy, too.
The tour that Voivod headlined over Soundgarden and FNM was for Nothingface ,not Dimension Hatross. I actually saw them at a midweek throw in gig in January in my hometown of Lancaster PA, and actually sang the 2nd verse in Astronomy Domine before stage diving for the first and last time ever !!
When you get past your mid 40s is when those 80/90s excesses truly begin taking their toll . I wake up in a world of pain each and every day - sth which I´m pretty certain is connected , at least partially , to my chaotic behaviour at such concerts .
Love Voivod. The first album I bought of theirs was "Dimension Hatross" and it is still my favorite. I love the majority of their albums. Great video guys!
Big fan here! NothingFace Angel Rat Dimension Hatröss The Outer Limits Killing Technology War And Pain The Wake Voivod Negatron Phobos Target Earth Katorz Infini Rrroooaaarrr The tour with Rush was in 1990, NothingFace tour (Presto tour for Rush). Angel Rat is from 1991, produced by Terry Brown, indeed - An underrrated masterpiece.
One of my all-time favorite bands. So many different and unique sounding albums! 14.Rrroooaaarrr 13. Katorz 12. War and Pain 11. Infini 10. Negatron 9. Voivod (More of a straight forward heavy rock/metal record. Newsted deserves some credit for getting Voivod back together and contributing to what I think is a pretty solid album) 8. Target Earth 7. Phobos (Great retro kind of sound, kind of fuzzed out and muddy, and altogether a better album overall than Negatron. Don't sleep on this Eric Forrest lead record) 6. The Wake 5. Killing Technology 4. The Outer Limits 3. Nothingface 2. Angel Rat 1.Dimension Hatross
@@fredlaroche6969 I have relistened to both the Wake and Target Earth since this posting and I think I would flip them around. I like Target Earth a bit more. It's a little heavier and I like what Snake does vocally on it a little more as well.
1. Dimension Hatross (their masterpiece) 2. Nothingface 3. Killing Technology 4. The Outer Limits (mostly because of Jack Luminous) 5. Rrröööaaarrr 6. War and Pain 7. Angel Rat 8. The Wake 9. Target Earth 10. Infini 11. Voivod 12. Katorz 13. Negatron 14. Phobos
1) Killing Technology - 1st Voivod album I ever bought. My favorite to this day. 2) Nothingface - Not as brutal as Killing Technology, but great. Love Astronomy Domine. 3) Target Earth - Chewy's 1st record and he absolutely shreds. 4) Dimension Hatross - One of their best. 5) Infini - God Phones and Volcano are my faves too, Pete. 6) The Wake - Latest release and it kicks ass. 7) Katorz 8) War and Pain 9) Voivod 10) Angel Rat 11) Outer Limits 12) Negatron 13) Phobos 14) Rrroooaaarrr Every Voivod album is worthy, in my opinion.
Great stuff, as usual!!! I'm really digging this series of ranking the albums. For me is a tight between Dimension and Nothingface. But I'd like to ask you something. Please do consider doing the ranking the albums of Sepultura. Their profille totally fits the bands chosen so far on this series: Voivod, Exodus... still active big bands, but not the obvious ones, (Maiden, Priest, Metallica...) Well, except for Slayer (that is no longer active and it's a huge band).
Abso-fucking-lutely. Sepultura is at their peak power right now: Firing on all cylinders, and more musically adventurous than ever. Derrick Green, Andreas, Eloy, Paulo... these guys are just fucking beasts.
1. Killing Technology (Piggy's best riff's) 2. Nothing Face (Blacky's best bass lines) 3. Dimension Hatross (Away's best performance) 4.The Outer Limits (Snake's best Vocals) 5. War and Pain (Best Debut album) 6. Rrrrrrooooaaaaarrr (Venom/Merciful fate influence) 7. Angel Rat (Change of direction from Prog Metal to Prog Rock, not a bad album) 8. Phobos (heavier than Negatron, very spacey and psychedelic.) 9. Negatron (departs from the Prog Rock sound to industrial metal. Eric Forrest's debut with the band as vocalist/bassist.) 10. Target Earth (Voivod's comeback album, the band retract to their roots and Blacky returns to the band.) 11. The Wake (An awesome concept album, Rocky's debut album with the band.) 12. Voivod (Jason Newsted's debut and Snake's return to the band. The band sound picks up after Outer Limits, ditching the industrial metal and returning to prog rock but with more edge.) 13. Katroz (Was consider to be the final album from the band, includes some recorded riffs from Piggy just before his passing.) 14. Infini (The second and final album that contributes the last of Piggy's recordings. This was Jason Newstead's last album with the band.)
Dimension Hatross, amazing, heard the master reel to reel tape of this album before release,Harris Johns played it. The band I was in ,Hobb’s Angel Of Death was booked in next to record.
Good call, Will. Angel Rat is their crowning achievement. A huge brave move for the band too. Some might consider the album a sellout effort but I think it's the band's original vision fully realized. Outer Limits gets a close 2nd and The Wake in 3rd. I actually dig Katorz and Infini. No thrash vibes but to me they're both very cool and more straightforward.
They were headlining with Soundgarden and Faith No More in Minneapolis (a few hours away) in Feb of '90 but a severe ice storm kept me home. Heard it was really great.
Linked this video on the "Vovodians" facebook page. Great video!!!! More views coming your way. Love your vids! Always wondered if you liked Voivod. Voivod...still relevant after all these years. Love The Wake. Killing Technology is probably my favorite. Back in the 80s, my friend first bought the first two albums but Killing Technology was the first Voivod album I bought myself.
They are the Pink Floyd of metal. They always put tons of work into the lyrics and conceptual art. They are a musicians band which is great but I always hoped that they would find a bigger audience. I very much enjoyed this conversation about an awesome band!
ADORE this band. Pete does good work here. 1-Dimension Hatröss - No brainer and one of the finest pieces of metal music I've ever heard..LITERAL GENIUS!!! 2-Killing Technology - No brainer (give me 1 and 2 and you can put me on a desolate island and I'd be fine).... 3-Nothingface- Yep, cleaner, softer, not as heavy or fast, but holy cow the music was still amazing. YEP, the Floyd cover is one of the finest covers in music history. 4-Rrröööaaarrr-Actually like this album better than the one that came after it (War and Pain) 5-Target Earth--I know some wont agree, but I think this album is amazing. It gets a spot among the master opus outputs of this legendary band. gets harder here.
I worship Voivod and they are the nicest down to earth guys (for being Lost in Space ;). Chewy is a fan like the rest of us, but adding to their legacy. Just brilliant.Long live Piggy and the legacies of Blacky and E-Force, with respect to Jasonic and the other bassists who helped with the great Outer Limits. My ranking from top to bottom (with top 7 really classic for me, the bottom 8 a hodgepodge stew of their greatness): Nothing Angel Dimension Outer Target Killing Wake Post Society Phobos Katorz Roarrrrr War Infiniti Negatron Voivod Btw, the Fates Warning albums Terry Brown produced were Parallels Inside out Pleasant Shade of Grey Disconnected Voivod!!!!!
My personnal take, huge Voivod fans, my top 6 albums. 1) Dimension Hatross 2) Nothingface 3) Killing Technology 4) Angel rate 5) The Wake 6) The Outer Limit
In 1990 i joined the BMG or Columbia House Tape club ( i forget which one ) and I was flipping through the monthly magazine looking for something to order. You would sometimes buy one and get two at half price . Im looking in the metal section and Voivod somehow stuck out . I had never heard of Voivod but they had a pink floyd song attached to them and out of the blue I took a gamble and picked " Nothingface " . In 1990 you couldn't sample music off the internet , sometimes you just had to gamble . I get Voivod Nothingface on cassette from the mail , pop it in my cassette player and Good God Almighty !!!! What the heck kinda metal is this ? Damn what an album . I was already into Rush , Kansas , Fates Warning so I was looking for proggy metal but Jesus Christ what the heck is Piggy doing ? I simply was blown away and " Nothingface " is still my favorite Voivod album . Angel Rat with Terry Brown is my second favorite followed by " The Outer Limits " . Dimension Hatross and Killing Technology were a little too thrashy but I still enjoy them . Nobody else even remotely sounds like Voivod . Terry Brown is my favorite all time producer but he didn't produce " Perfect Symmetry " from Fates Warning . Terry Brown produced : Parallels ( My favorite album of all time ) , Inside Out , A pleasant shade of grey , Disconnected. .......Brian should have known that lol
To me Killing Technology and Dimention Hatröss are top two; KT is the perfect hybrid between punk and thrash and DH is probably their most complex. The odd time signatures are just out there and all over the place (1/4, 7/4, 3/8, 7/8, 9/8, 12/8 and... 13/16, which I've yet to understand how to count properly). Surprisingly I find The Wake to be amongst their strongest albums as well, although it's more prog metal/rock oriented. Which brings me to Anget Rat and Nothingface rounding up my top 5. I do not dislike any of the rest that being said, but all these I've listened over the rest. I mean... man Voivod ftw. These guys are unacclaimed, although recognised by their peers as such, legends of thrash.
Hi Pete, hi Brian, hi Steve and hi Elliott, hope you're all having a great weekend. This is my ranking of the Voivod catalogue, which i consider myself a fan of: -War And Pain-The production works at times (it is very lovely that you can always hear the bass) but it is meant to be dirty old thrash, which is not so lovely at times. It's finely performed, but unproduced -Rrröööaaarrr-This album has a better production, sinking the instruments at times, but definitely an improvement from the debut (in a production stand point) -Angel Bat-This one got very heavier than its predecessor, but it stays behind it because some songs are very weak like Clouds In My House, because of the vocals , they're not very strong. -The Outer Limits-This album left Thrash behind completely, it's very hard rocking and progressive, it really doesn't have a lot of metal (except for some key elements) compared to other albums; but it's very good. -Target Earth -S/T -Infini -Phobos-This album is very complete, but it's starting to grow some dominating hardcore hints in the music, that's why i rank it so low. -The Wake -Dimension Hatross-This one broke a bit away from thrash and speed, (still very heavy) but they were replaced by very *proggy* elements and quirky musical passages (reminds of Mastodon sometimes, they were before Mastodon tho :v) that set them apart from other metal bands. The production i find a little boxy -Killing Technology-This album finds the production totally fixed in comparison to the debut and the sophomore; still a very speedy and raw thrash album, but more elegant and technical. -Negatron-It's very heavy, but not so speedy, featuring some crunching metal guitars and hardcore-ish vocals, as well as it is punishingly technical and proggy. -Nothingface-Great vocals, amazing production (the bass sound is mindblowing) and guitar tones, heavy , proggy , memorable tunes... Very clever musicianship that finds Voivod at the top of their game. The only Voivod album i don't own/haven't heard is called Katorz, i didn't rank it in because i can't even find it on TH-cam. Will Carroll! What a surprise! Hope you're doing better 😎👊
I am really glad that so many people love Angel Rat and The Outer Limits. "Commercial" Voivod, I guess despite zero mainstream radio play ever. Those albums, and all of them really are at least good and way different than anything else while still all sounding like Voivod. I think the first album (cassette) of theirs I got, Nothingface, was a traded for some forgotten cassette with a college friend. I knew this was something very different and cool. Then I went back and listened to a lot more, and Piggy died, and the band released the albums with his left over tracks. I like Voivod, the album quite a bit. I like the Eric Forrest years a lot. I like the new Chewy stuff. Have never been able to convince my older brother to like Voivod, which I find crazy since he was 100% metal in high school and even saw them on that Voivod, FNM, SG tour. I remember I bought The Outer Limits at the local Best Buy on CD on sale for either $5.99 or $6.99. Either way, that was a no brainer for me, and I played that seemingly endlessly for a long time after I bought it. Old to new, great band that has stayed relevant through many eras.
Nice to hear Phobots get a couple of mentions. That is a hugely underrated album in their discography in my opinion; really dark, heavya nd at times terrifying. I like it far better than negatron. But I agree they don't have any really bad albums. I really like The Outer Limits but for some reason I can't rate it as highly as some. Actually I think I know why -- it's missing something, most notably the killer bass and bass tone thats' on pretty much all other Voivod albums (maybe less so the E-Force albums, but it's still there). Piggy definitely makes up for it with some of his most proggish guitarwork and there's a real nice variety of songs, but that blower-sound that's such a huge part of Voivod (yes, Rocky has it too) is just nowhere to be found. Oh well, look, I still love it more than most albums from most bands haha
Rocky has Blacky's tone and chops, but lacks the DJ experience that made the first six albums sound properly paced no matter how avant garde they went.
Fun! One of the greatest metal bands of all time. All their albums are great, but the holy trinity of Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross, and Nothingface is the sweet spot for me. Really digging Chewy's contributions to the band as well. I thought Piggy would be impossible to replace, but Chewy proved me wrong.
Before I start the video I'll say my 3 least favorites in this order are Voivod - Self Titled(least favorite), Infini, then Katorz. Sorry that's how it is. After that(from least to favorite) there's not an album I dislike I'm just ranking it on fondness for those albums and how much I go back to certain albums. Nothing Face(great trippy album, love it, but it's not as powerful as some of their stuff), Negatron(love this album, its' the album that renewed my interest in Voivod after I had stopped listening to them in the 90's), Roar(love the album, and it's a ripper, but it's a mood album.) Target Earth(great fucking record I just didn't commit the time to become as familiar with it as their early stuff), Phobos(Amazing record that should not be overlooked), The Wake(I'm falling in love with this record, but it's still too new more me to place it higher), Angel Rat(it was a WTF record for me at the time, but I grew to really love it), Killing Technology(love it, just don't go back to it much), Dimension Hatross(monumental...same thing I don't revisit it much), Outer Limits(pure masterpiece I revisit now and then), War and Pain(this album changed how I though about heavy music. It was the heaviest album in the world for me at the time and they did it without singing about Satan. They made Nuclear War the new cool thing to sing about.) War and Pain is still my most listened to Voivod album.
1-War and Pain; 2-Dimension Hatross; 3-Killing Technology; 4-Rrroooaaarrr and that`s it. I love their re-issues with all the live shows (bootleg quality).
Been a fan since War and Pain was the only album available. I missed a couple of releases but have most of the catalogue. I think Killing Technology to Nothingface is a perfect trilogy. Outer Limits, Phobos, War and Pain all superb albums. And yes, I think Chewy is the only guitarist who could replace Piggy and have the band still sounding like Voivod! Great video!!
Met the guys in Cleveland on the Angel Rat tour. Show was in a small night club. I guesstimate about 50 people tops. Played pinball with Away and Snake before the show. Away couldn't speak a lick of English but it didn't matter, the music spoke for itself. One of my all-time best shows and I've seen a lot! Lol. Thanks for reviewing them.👍😊👍
Met Away in 2010, he could do just fine with English by then. Humble dude. Told him thanks for the great music and I hope he and his band knew how amazing they really were....his response was simply a handshake, a smile and a thanks. They opened for Kreator on this night and while Kreator is a hard band to open for given how good they are, Voivod more than held their own.
@@kevinw8688 Saw them several times over the years; one of the best: Killing Technology "Tournado 87" w Kreator opening at Metro Chicago. One of the most violent, energetic pits I've seen at a show.
Away was dating an English girl back then, he speaks and understands English, he even co-wrote angel rat. He’s just an introvert and doesn’t speak much but he spoke English with the Germans like kreator and destruction and communicated very well as early as 1986, it would make no sense that he didn’t speak English well before 2010!
I was listening to Killing Technology (the same one you were holding) in the car and I didnt wan't to stop until it finished, it's such a great and unique sound and its frickin heavy!
" Nothingface " is the pinnacle for anybody into Voivod since the 80s . Period . Really happy to see Brian Slagel in good health , this man was our God as early- mid teen thrashers growing up in the 80s .
Glad to see you happy and healthy, Will. I think I would go: 1. Hatross 2. Killing Technology 3. Nothingface 4. The Wake 5. Phobos 6. Angel Rat 7. Target Earth 8. Negatron 9. Outer Limits 10. War and Pain
I talked to their manager, Pierre Paradis after the Angel Rat album came out. He said that MCA was very unhappy with the record and that touring and support for the record were being scrapped, with only a few shows being booked. The band were immediately heading back into the studio.
Voivod is so underrated. Thanks for doing their Top 10!! 1. Angel Rat 2. The Outer Limits 3. Nothingface 4. Dimension Hatross 5. Killing Technology 6. War and Pain 7. Voivod 8. Rrroarrrr 9. Phobos 10. Negatron
Thanks to all of you for doing this. I am from Québec and a Voivod worshipper. For your info, some of the album titles that you had problems pronouncing are actually bastardized Québec french: KATORZ is actually the number 14 or quatorze, and DIMENSION HATROSS is dimension atroce, or in English ATROCIOUS :)
Thanks Pete I love this band. Blacky is a very underrated bass player.1. Nothingface 2. Dimension Hatross 3.Killing Technology 4.Rrrrroaarrrr 5. Angel rat.
Trivia: with Rrroooaaarrr, they were trying to outdo Slayer at the time (trying to be heavier and faster), according to Snake (in an interview I saw a while back).
I think only Will mentioned it as being his least favorite. It's clearly better than Katorz or Infini imo because they were writing as a band and Newsted brought in a fresh new energy. Katorz and Infini are cool for what they are but it basically was just how Piggy envisioned and structured those songs.
Props for doing Voivod, great band.Jack Luminous is my fave from The Outer Limits. The covers of Pink Floyd and King Crimson are also great. In no particular order: Killing Technology, Nothingface, The Outer Limits, They also did a great cover of Hawkwind (Silver Machine)
Like many, I suspect, all their albums are fabulous. It was To The Death 84 (2011) that helped me appreciate War and Pain. But this is probably my top five: 1. Killing Technology (1987) 2. Dimension Hatröss (1988) 3. Angel Rat (1991) 4. Nothingface (1989) 5. The Wake (2018)
1974(first time heard) Paranoid - Everything else sucks now. 1979 Bomber/Overkill - Finally, something to listen to besides Sabbath! 1980 Iron Maiden - Hey I can listen to metal and punk at the same time! 1982 Bad Brains - Punks who can play!? 1982 Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing - mind blown, nothing could ever be heavier. 1983 Triumph of Death - OK, I was wrong, nothing could be heavier. 1984 War and Pain - No fucking way, where will it end?
The great thing about Voivöd is that you can play literally any song of any album and instantly know it's Voivöd. No matter the direction they were going in, they always kept something that made it sound like them.
Angel Rat and The Outer Limits are 2 of my favorites, but Dimension Hatross is my favorite. I didnt know they toured with Rush around that time. Amazing!
I consider Voivod to be one of the absolute best bands of all time, extremely unique and innovative band. My ranking and aproximate ratings of albums goes like this: 1. Killing Technology 10/10 2. Dimension Hatröss 10/10 3. War and Pain 10/10 4. The Outer Limits 10/10 5. Angel Rat 9/10 6. Nothingface 8.5/10 7. Rrröööaaarrr 8/10 8. The Wake 7/10 9. Phobos 6/10 10. Post Dociety EP 6/10 11. Voivod 6/10 12. Target Earth 5/10 13. Negatron 5/10 14. Infini 4/10 15. Katorz 4/10
I started with Dimension Hatröss. Concluding my first playing of it I thought, “What just happened?” I too very much like Angel Rat, not only for how melodic, harmonic, and socially aware it is, but also for how those very characteristics make it easier to introduce metal-reluctant friends to the band. All of whose catalogue is awesome. Stravinsky with a drum kit.
Voivod toured with Rush on the Nothingface album. And it's also on that tour that they had FNM and Soundgarden opening for them later that year.. Not on the Dimension Hatross tour. Great work by the way.
1. Phobos 2. Dimension Hatross 3. Killing Technology 4. Nothingface 5. Angel Rat 6. The Outer Limits 7. War and Pain 8. Negatron 9. The Wake 10. Voivod I was interested in how the contributors spoke quite highly of Rrroooaaarrr; that is the one that has never grown on me, other than Korgull. And from a personal preference standpoint, I'd bump up Negatron to 6 and bump down Outer Limits and War and Pain, but for the purpose of this list, I couldn't deny the uniqueness and importance of the first album, and the all around consistency of The Outer Limits. And I like all the Chewy stuff, but could only fit so much on here. (Though the latter half of Target Earth has never really stuck out to me.)
The drummer from Death Angel!!!! Man, I had all their tapes!!!! I started commenting as soon as he was introduced...guess I should get back to the video hahaha
I tripped on this because I remembered I had purchased one VV album way back, so went to my cassette vault and found "Dimension." Why only one? The groove just wasn't there for me. Also found, the one I wore out in the same year, was Fates Warning, "No Exit." Thanks for the show.
I was surprised that on one picked up on, or even mentioned, the reference to Jack Luminous on the new The Wake album, during the song "Sonic Mycelium". And I feel like I'm the only one who liked their cover of Pink Flyod's The Nile Song more than Astronomy Domine. Also surprised that there was no mention of that cover song.
Alot of talk about the big four of metal but for me there's only two. Voivod and Megadeth. And my top Voivod album is Angel Rat but not a stinker in the catalog.
Dimension Hatross is the masterpiece
EEEE---ZEEE---LEEEE. Only album I rank ahead of KT
I'd say there are many masterpieces in that catalog!
Dimension Hatross is definitely #2, but nothing can beat Killing Technology. Obviously the title track is incredible but Tornado, Overreaction, Ravenous Medicine, Too scared to scream. Those are all some of the best Voivod songs
That is my number one too. Masterpiece.
To those are the golden albums. top 5 would be:
5. Negatron
4. Rrröööaaarrr
3. Nothingface
2. Killing Technologies
1. Dimension Hätross
Admired by metal, prog and post punk musicians. A truly own-genre band.
Every Voivod album is good. I think Angel Rat is underated as hell..
Angel Rat is awesome . Terry Brown always got great results from musicians.
Dr stupid. Agree totaly !!

Agree. Angel Rat is a masterpiece.
Angel Rat's art rock vibe might have turned off some fans, but it was a necessary phase in their development - without Angel Rat, there probably wouldn't have been an Outer Limits next. (It also had really cool album art. The zombie pirate [??] guy on the cover.)
I could listen to Voivod analysis all day. They are the greatest band ever. Soundtrack of my life thru every stage so far.
Absolutely delighted to see you're doing voivod man!!... I'm not surprised you had to bring some other folks on! Thank you for putting your hands into the coals!
Voivod is probably the only band that I love all of their albums, they all have their own charm...what a band!!!!

My favorite from Voivod is Dimension Hatross.
Thank you for ranking the studio albums of Voivod.🎤🎸🎵🥁
My top fave : 1. Nothingface 2. Killing Technology 3. Dimension Hatross 4. The Wake 5. The outer limit
Love Voivod. The first album I bought of theirs was "Dimension Hatross" and it is still my favorite. I love the majority of their albums.

The tour with Rush was in 1990, NothingFace tour (Presto tour for Rush). Angel Rat is from 1991, produced by Terry Brown, indeed - An underrrated masterpiece.
#1 Dimension Hatross. Love this album. Still crank it to this day.
Great to see Will is Healthy. 🤘 Gotta say Nothingface is my favorite.🤘 Peace and be Safe 🤘 Spaghetti Lee
One of my all-time favorite bands. So many different and unique sounding albums!
14.Rrroooaaarrr
13. Katorz
12. War and Pain
11. Infini
10. Negatron
9. Voivod (More of a straight forward heavy rock/metal record. Newsted deserves some credit for getting Voivod back together and contributing to what I think is a pretty solid album)
8. Target Earth
7. Phobos (Great retro kind of sound, kind of fuzzed out and muddy, and altogether a better album overall than Negatron. Don't sleep on this Eric Forrest lead record)
6. The Wake
5. Killing Technology
4. The Outer Limits
3. Nothingface
2. Angel Rat
1.Dimension Hatross
That's the list that would be closest to mine. Good list
@@fredlaroche6969 I have relistened to both the Wake and Target Earth since this posting and I think I would flip them around. I like Target Earth a bit more. It's a little heavier and I like what Snake does vocally on it a little more as well.
The Wake, Nothingface, Angel Rat, Target Earth, Outer Limits.
That latest album is beyond incredible.
1. Dimension Hatross (their masterpiece)
2. Nothingface
3. Killing Technology
4. The Outer Limits (mostly because of Jack Luminous)
5. Rrröööaaarrr
6. War and Pain
7. Angel Rat
8. The Wake
9. Target Earth
10. Infini
11. Voivod
12. Katorz
13. Negatron
14. Phobos
Will was a great guest this week! Very surprised to see Hatross lower on some of these lists. Always been my favorite
7) Katorz
8) War and Pain
9) Voivod
10) Angel Rat
11) Outer Limits
12) Negatron
13) Phobos
14) Rrroooaaarrr
Every Voivod album is worthy, in my opinion.
Top 3: The Outer Limits (masterpiece), Angel Rat, The Wake
Great stuff, as usual!!! I'm really digging this series of ranking the albums. For me is a tight between Dimension and Nothingface. But I'd like to ask you something. Please do consider doing the ranking the albums of Sepultura. Their profille totally fits the bands chosen so far on this series: Voivod, Exodus... still active big bands, but not the obvious ones, (Maiden, Priest, Metallica...) Well, except for Slayer (that is no longer active and it's a huge band).
They rule!
Abso-fucking-lutely. Sepultura is at their peak power right now:
Firing on all cylinders, and more musically adventurous than ever.
Derrick Green, Andreas, Eloy, Paulo... these guys are just fucking beasts.
Beneath the remains is one Hell of an album! Not to say they don’t have other great albums as well.
1. Killing Technology (Piggy's best riff's)
2. Nothing Face (Blacky's best bass lines)
3. Dimension Hatross (Away's best performance)
4.The Outer Limits (Snake's best Vocals)
5. War and Pain (Best Debut album)
6. Rrrrrrooooaaaaarrr (Venom/Merciful fate influence)
7. Angel Rat (Change of direction from Prog Metal to Prog Rock, not a bad album)
8. Phobos (heavier than Negatron, very spacey and psychedelic.)
9. Negatron (departs from the Prog Rock sound to industrial metal. Eric Forrest's debut with the band as vocalist/bassist.)
10. Target Earth (Voivod's comeback album, the band retract to their roots and Blacky returns to the band.)
11. The Wake (An awesome concept album, Rocky's debut album with the band.)
12. Voivod (Jason Newsted's debut and Snake's return to the band. The band sound picks up after Outer Limits, ditching the industrial metal and returning to prog rock but with more edge.)
13. Katroz (Was consider to be the final album from the band, includes some recorded riffs from Piggy just before his passing.)
14. Infini (The second and final album that contributes the last of Piggy's recordings. This was Jason Newstead's last album with the band.)
Merciful Fate influence????????????
@@pauliescott the lyrics have some resemblance to Merciful fate.
Voivod has a great catalog but their first 5 albums are their best and the last album was killer.
Voivoid toured with Rush to support Nothingface. It was on Rush’s Presto tour.
I was at the show in Toronto. Voivod didn't go over that well. Many Rush fans only cared about Rush.
NEIL FOLKARD sadly that is what happen to most opening acts.
They were headlining with Soundgarden and Faith No More in Minneapolis (a few hours away) in Feb of '90 but a severe ice storm kept me home. Heard it was really great.
BADASS
Saw them with Faith NO MORE AT THE RITZ on 54th around 1990 .Didn't know they played with RUSH .sorry I missed that show .ROCK on my friend.
Will Carroll! Holy shit, I'm glad you're feeling better, bro! All the best!
They are the Pink Floyd of metal. They always put tons of work into the lyrics and conceptual art. They are a musicians band which is great but I always hoped that they would find a bigger audience. I very much enjoyed this conversation about an awesome band!
awesome, one of my all time favourite bands
ADORE this band. Pete does good work here.
1-Dimension Hatröss - No brainer and one of the finest pieces of metal music I've ever heard..LITERAL GENIUS!!!
2-Killing Technology - No brainer (give me 1 and 2 and you can put me on a desolate island and I'd be fine)....
3-Nothingface- Yep, cleaner, softer, not as heavy or fast, but holy cow the music was still amazing. YEP, the Floyd cover is one of the finest covers in music history.
4-Rrröööaaarrr-Actually like this album better than the one that came after it (War and Pain)
5-Target Earth--I know some wont agree, but I think this album is amazing. It gets a spot among the master opus outputs of this legendary band.
gets harder here.
Excellent, great show! Love VoiVod!
My ranking from top to bottom (with top 7 really classic for me, the bottom 8 a hodgepodge stew of their greatness):
Nothing
Angel
Dimension
Outer
Target
Killing
Wake
Post Society
Phobos
Katorz
Roarrrrr
War
Infiniti
Negatron
Voivod
Btw, the Fates Warning albums Terry Brown produced were
Parallels

Pleasant Shade of Grey
Disconnected
Voivod!!!!!
Jeez, I forgot to mention Rocky, what a great player and nice guy, who fits perfectly into the Voivod legacy. Go Rocky!
My personnal take, huge Voivod fans, my top 6 albums.
1) Dimension Hatross
2) Nothingface
3) Killing Technology
4) Angel rate
5) The Wake
6) The Outer Limit
YUP, KT and DH are the two best, easily. Complete masterpiece records.
Hi Pete, hi Brian, hi Steve and hi Elliott, hope you're all having a great weekend. This is my ranking of the Voivod catalogue, which i consider myself a fan of:
-War And Pain-The production works at times (it is very lovely that you can always hear the bass) but it is meant to be dirty old thrash, which is not so lovely at times. It's finely performed, but unproduced
-Rrröööaaarrr-This album has a better production, sinking the instruments at times, but definitely an improvement from the debut (in a production stand point)
-Angel Bat-This one got very heavier than its predecessor, but it stays behind it because some songs are very weak like Clouds In My House, because of the vocals , they're not very strong.
-The Outer Limits-This album left Thrash behind completely, it's very hard rocking and progressive, it really doesn't have a lot of metal (except for some key elements) compared to other albums; but it's very good.
-Target Earth
-S/T
-Infini
-Phobos-This album is very complete, but it's starting to grow some dominating hardcore hints in the music, that's why i rank it so low.
-The Wake
-Dimension Hatross-This one broke a bit away from thrash and speed, (still very heavy) but they were replaced by very *proggy* elements and quirky musical passages (reminds of Mastodon sometimes, they were before Mastodon tho :v) that set them apart from other metal bands. The production i find a little boxy
-Killing Technology-This album finds the production totally fixed in comparison to the debut and the sophomore; still a very speedy and raw thrash album, but more elegant and technical.
No Elliott this weekend
@@seaoftranquilityprog Just found out LOL
Post Society EP is not on the list but it's "Masterpiece"
AGREED.
Yes, love it! Especially 'Post Society' - really wish they would do more thrashy stuff
Sea of Tranquility is super cool. Thanks for the Voivod episode.
It would take at least two paragraphs to go into what Voivods influence on my life. I’ll spare everyone. Voivod’s Dimension Hatross is my number 1
Respect.
Haven’t heard everything by them but out of the ones I do know I would say......
Nothingface is my favorite
Killing Technology is my favorite album by Voivod! The rest of the albums were very good too!
Great to hear these legends opinions I'm pretty agreeable on their lists I love all voivod albums
This is great how different all your lists are. I love voivod and they were one of my first ever metal shows.
Just recently put up a tier ranking for voivods discography! Respect all your lists!
Good to see Will healthy! What a great bill. The Bay Strikes Back concert in Finland was so good. Voivod rules! Cheers from Finland, Petri
@@ValouQc WHO said he didn't speak good English by 2010? Please enlightened us.
glad to see how much love the outer limits gets!!! amazing album along with everything voivod
Voivod discography is the masterpiece !
Have a sweet multiversal travel Piggy, our flying cigar pilot Maestro !
I was listening to Killing Technology (the same one you were holding) in the car and I didnt wan't to stop until it finished, it's such a great and unique sound and its frickin heavy!
Folks, I am old enough to say I bought the debut on vinyl...and is one of my fave Metal album covers!
Voivod rules and my #1 is War and Pain closely followed by Dimension Hätross. Shall nice see you guys ranking Sepultura albums...
Great stuff. Saw them live last October and they were perfect. My top 5: Nothingface, Dimension Hatross, Killing Technology, katorz, the wake
Great to see Will again
" Nothingface " is the pinnacle for anybody into Voivod since the 80s . Period .
Really happy to see Brian Slagel in good health , this man was our God as early- mid teen thrashers growing up in the 80s .

5. Phobos
6. Angel Rat
7. Target Earth
8. Negatron
9. Outer Limits

I talked to their manager, Pierre Paradis after the Angel Rat album came out. He said that MCA was very unhappy with the record and that touring and support for the record were being scrapped, with only a few shows being booked. The band were immediately heading back into the studio.
That’s called a safe bet, Paradis was an awful manager.
Voivod is so underrated. Thanks for doing their Top 10!!

2. The Outer Limits
3. Nothingface
4. Dimension Hatross
5. Killing Technology
6. War and Pain
7. Voivod
8. Rrroarrrr
9. Phobos
I"m glad Angel Rat receives some love.....Less harder doesn't mean less good....My top Three: 1-Dimension Hatross, 2- Angel Rat, 3- Killing Tecnology
Thanks Pete I love this band. Blacky is a very underrated bass player.1. Nothingface 2. Dimension Hatross 3.Killing Technology 4.Rrrrroaarrrr 5. Angel rat.
Katorz means fourteen in french for those who don't know....14th voivod album !

2. Killing Technology
3. Dimension Hatross
4. War and Pain
5. Outer Limits
6. Nothingface
7. Synchro Anarchy
8.Negatron
9. Katorz
10. Target Earth
Phobos in the number one spot...nice!!very good record
Trivia: with Rrroooaaarrr, they were trying to outdo Slayer at the time (trying to be heavier and faster), according to Snake (in an interview I saw a while back).
I actually LOVE the "Voivod" album with Newsted. Not even mentioned here................
But yeah, "Katorz" is great, too.
I think only Will mentioned it as being his least favorite. It's clearly better than Katorz or Infini imo because they were writing as a band and Newsted brought in a fresh new energy. Katorz and Infini are cool for what they are but it basically was just how Piggy envisioned and structured those songs.
Me too. It's better than Katorz and Infini in my opinion
Its funny, my now 27 yr old son loved the Jasonic era at the time...
I'm still amazed at Piggy's (deceased) guitar sound on "Katorz", and all on ProTools!! Phenomenal...................
@@mattvargo9944 Love Self Titled and Katorz but Infini for some reason never clicked with me
Props for doing Voivod, great band.Jack Luminous is my fave from The Outer Limits. The covers of Pink Floyd and King Crimson are also great. In no particular order: Killing Technology, Nothingface, The Outer Limits, They also did a great cover of Hawkwind (Silver Machine)
Angel Rat is my favorite. Partly because he sings rather than screams. My second choice is Synchro Anarchy for similar reasons.
Like many, I suspect, all their albums are fabulous. It was To The Death 84 (2011) that helped me appreciate War and Pain. But this is probably my top five:
1. Killing Technology (1987)
2. Dimension Hatröss (1988)
3. Angel Rat (1991)
4. Nothingface (1989)
Rush toured with Voivod in ‘90 (Nothingface).
The great thing about Voivöd is that you can play literally any song of any album and instantly know it's Voivöd. No matter the direction they were going in, they always kept something that made it sound like them.
The ranking so nice I watched it twice.
Angel Rat and The Outer Limits are 2 of my favorites, but Dimension Hatross is my favorite. I didnt know they toured with Rush around that time. Amazing!
1. Killing Technology
2. Angel Rat
3. Dimension Hatross
4. The Outer Limits
5. The Wake
I consider Voivod to be one of the absolute best bands of all time, extremely unique and innovative band. My ranking and aproximate ratings of albums goes like this:
1. Killing Technology 10/10
2. Dimension Hatröss 10/10
3. War and Pain 10/10
4. The Outer Limits 10/10
5. Angel Rat 9/10
6. Nothingface 8.5/10
7. Rrröööaaarrr 8/10
8. The Wake 7/10
9. Phobos 6/10
10. Post Dociety EP 6/10
11. Voivod 6/10
12. Target Earth 5/10
13. Negatron 5/10
14. Infini 4/10
15. Katorz 4/10
Fall is a great track off of the Post Society EP!
I started with Dimension Hatröss. Concluding my first playing of it I thought, “What just happened?”
I too very much like Angel Rat, not only for how melodic, harmonic, and socially aware it is, but also for how those very characteristics make it easier to introduce metal-reluctant friends to the band. All of whose catalogue is awesome. Stravinsky with a drum kit.
Voivod toured with Rush on the Nothingface album. And it's also on that tour that they had FNM and Soundgarden opening for them later that year.. Not on the Dimension Hatross tour. Great work by the way.
My faves: 1. Nothingface 2. Hatröss 3. Outer Limits 4, Angel Rat 5. Katorz 6.Wake 7.Killing Technology 8. Target Earth
Very similar to my list, although I would probably bump Killing Technology up to #5.
Been waiting for this one!
Will, Love your stuff with Death Angel!!!!!!
It is pronounced « Cat-orz». That means 14. You can trust me, I’m French Canadian.
Exact.
It is also their 14th album. Je viens également du Québec. ;-)
I’m not liking because I want it to stay at 14 likes ;)

My fav will always be Nothingface. I still have my 3D glasses that came with The Outer Limits.
Great Show!
1. Phobos
2. Dimension Hatross
3. Killing Technology
4. Nothingface
5. Angel Rat
6. The Outer Limits
7. War and Pain
8. Negatron
9. The Wake
10. Voivod
I was interested in how the contributors spoke quite highly of Rrroooaaarrr; that is the one that has never grown on me, other than Korgull.
Nice to see some Phobos love
Return Korgull once again!
I only listen up to Nothingface, so here's my ranking
5. Dimension Hatross
4. War and Pain
3. Nothingface
2. Rrroooaaarrr
1. Killing Technology
You should give The Outer Limits a listen :)
The drummer from Death Angel!!!! Man, I had all their tapes!!!! I started commenting as soon as he was introduced...guess I should get back to the video hahaha
I tripped on this because I remembered I had purchased one VV album way back, so went to my cassette vault and found "Dimension."
Why only one? The groove just wasn't there for me. Also found, the one I wore out in the same year, was Fates Warning, "No Exit." Thanks for the show.
Two of my all-time favorite bands there of which I discovered both that summer of '87.
Surprised no one had the Jasonic self titled album. I love that album.
I really like it too. Surprised that none of them liked it.
@@RichardW001 That's one that took a while to click with me but once it did it became one of my favourite Voivod albums
The Nile Song is way cooler than Astronomy Domine.
Alot of talk about the big four of metal but for me there's only two. Voivod and Megadeth. And my top Voivod album is Angel Rat but not a stinker in the catalog.
