Looks like you have a great kid there. It is always great to see their face light up when you give them something worthwhile that will last them a lifetime and provide great memories for both of you. You are obviously a good father.. Kudos to you.
i think tool marks are the heart of a good knife. shows where it came from, the care that was taken into making it, and its reassurance that there's nothing fake about it.
I was in Harbour Freight last week and they had an 18" machete in a plastic case for $3.99. I thought "what the hell? I will give it a try". Lo and behold, it broke in half the first day! The handle snapped right off and I was lucky nobody got injured. Lesson learned. This thing looks like the real deal. I just ordered one from Cold Steel. Their "gurhka" style has some good reviews, and the price is right. We'll see...
That's truly an impressive knife and sheath. Very innovative design. And the part at the end where you passed it to your son was priceless. Stellar video. I made a similar style bush blade recently myself and made some videos.
I have received my bowie knife and i can say that the thing is even more impressive on the flesh! Really nice. Does an outstanding job on chopping and limbing much better than a machete. Can also be used like an axe if needed. A great outdoor tool. Mine was not razor sharp when i got it ( on purpose? ) so i sharpened it myself and now, it works even better. Congrats for the good work Frank.
What really caught my attention was how easily it split that wood. The size of the blade looks perfect too. I checked the website and they're priced very fairly. Don't be surprised if you see me showing one off my channel soon.
Great video, but the best part was the ending. My father and I are both Eagle scouts, but I was just a green Tenderfoot when he gave me MY first nice knife, a Gerber Gator. I still have it to this day, and watching little Sooch's face when he got that knife made me remember how I felt when Dad gave me that Gerber. Good times, great video.
thanks to your review ,i placed my order last month and recently recieved my very own frank bowie. it is indeed an awesome knife. it came in 3 days and frank was so professional throughout the whole process. i am just itchin to use this when i go home to guam. look out jungle here i come.
Yes!! I had been hoping to see a Frank Bowie vid, after doing business with Frank once already, I now have to have his awesome Bowie.. Thanks for the video sootch!
I bought my Khukuri from Frank andhe was one of the nicest people I have ever delt with,he even called me latter on to make sure I was happy with it! Not to mention I recieved it 3 days from my order THATS SERVICE!!!!
I just ordered mine after seeing this video over 11 years ago. I was much younger then and that was a lot of money for me. Now I finally have one on order. It’s his last US made one that he had in stock. They will now be made in Napal. I’m sure those will be great as well, but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to buy the original frank Bowie made by frank. He may be making a last batch before changing production, might be a special addition. Be on the look out
Sootch that knife is awesome enjoy it.. Anyone on here trying to bring negative attention to the bowie ignore it. Knivesbyhand frank makes knives that absolultey work and last a long time. They arent safe queens. I love the shape of the knives and the fact that that knife will never fail you.
Soothch was kind enough to show me this knife the last time I was with him. The knife is awesome and the quality is out of this world. IS it a sin to coveat your neighbors knife? I hope not because Iam coveating this one right now. I guess I will have to get mine own. Thanks for exposing this knife maker to alot of people he offers quality with a great price. I truly believe he is selling them to cheap but dont tell him that till I convince the wife I need one.
Alot of people seem to criticise this knife, but until you put it in your hand and actually see it up close you will see why sootch gives it a good review. Frank now has stopped making them by hand and you can only get it through the "House of Kukri". Too bad for you who didnt get one of Franks originals. I got his simple bushknife and its of great quality as well.
That knife reminds me of the cold steel camp 10. I really like that knife. Absolutely beautiful. Love my camp 10 also. Great video thanks for sharing. Awesome.
As rainmechanic stated, I agree with the abrupt bevel on that thing not working for the blade thickness.. Not to mention that kind of thickness on that short of a blade seems slightly overkill.. My Condor Golok (also a tapered 1/4" blade) had problems with chopping and binding due to the bevel until I took a grinder to it, but the 14" blade makes the thickness workable.
I've always liked the look of that Frank Bowie. I wish I'd have come up with the design! That handle does look absolutely massive though. Maybe too much so for my tastes. I'd defintely want a slightly thinned down version I think.
Beautiful blade shape. Fat handle to fill your hand comfortably. Perfect length/size. Beautiful thickness. Cuts a lot of steel off the kukuri design allowing greater thickness for same weight. Sharp tip, yet still thick and durable. Good for most uses. Only need the one blade practically. Perfect EDC size. But, the finger grooves in the handle seem uncomfortable and restrictive to proper swinging, but I'd need to hold it to know. Other than that, it's pretty damn near perfection.
Well, I got my answer a few minutes ago after reading a kinda sad thread on this knife . Good luck to the original maker of the Frank Bowie Surviaval Knife . If Mr. Frank was still making these I would buy one from him today . Hang on to your FBS Knife young man . All the best from, pcnazz aka rock
if i could only afford one.. ive been saving up for a custom knife for a while.. but right now i have and carry tow types of knives. and Ontario SP-10 Marine raider, a very hefty blade made for chopping. and a fighting bowie, handmade out of high carbon steel, perfectly balanced at the crossguard brass fittings modeled after the origional bowie knife, a beautiful knife. its always important to have more than one knife for a certain purpose, but they have to be able to do eachothers roles!
The total package (knife & sheath) is $190 USD for "The Frank Bowie" It is a custom knife though and that is a plus. But having experience with the bigger Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri that also weighs 21oz & cost $161 USD shipped (Amazon) I would have to go with CS. I see nothing gained in the Frank Bowie Survival Knife or others like the Frank Bowie Defender Knife over the highly effective traditional Kukri. This type of Tom Brown Tracker design IS loved by a lot of people. I just don't see it.
@Waverip11 I viewed the Grayman Warrior blade. It is a very nice blade. You are correct in that it is shorter. Looks to be about 1.5 inches shorter. One difference I see is that the Grayman Warrior Blade is a straight blade. You can draw a straght line along the spine from the handle to the tip. The Grayman Warrior has a large curved belly giving the appearance of a forward curved blade. It has an interesting edge. I look forward to your review of this knife.
nice knife....i purchased the seven inch version from Nepal, dang useful tool. awesome the youngin got that knife...sorry i'm so late to the party, congrats Seth...woods
I would say that Seth's face said it all. What a great knife. Thanks for the review. Now, could you speak to my wife about how much I really NEED this knife? :)
The Khukuri is meant to chop and slash. The stories of the the Gurkhas using them in the Pacific are legendary. . . and downright badass. Knowing it’s not for stabbing, its extremely universal and deadly effective on everything from bush to bone. Now for sharpening it . . .
I thought that Frank Bowie was going to be in the 6 or 700 dollar range. 150 dollars is crazy! Think I will be getting in contact with the maker. Thanks for the info sootch00!
@Wabaanimkii You are correct, I did not design it to be a fighting knife. That was never my intent. I designed it for a Bush Knife for survival. Fighting knives should be double edged and more straight. You really cant baton a double edged knife very well. regards, Frank
i agree with this user. also, in this shape of knife, you cant touch the base of the blade against a flat surface. its a small - mid sized camp knife and i frequently use that part of the blade - although in a large 12inch kukhri , that design DOES make sense, because it defines the usefulness of that knife
I just found your channel today. Great content. Interesting that I should see this video as I've been working on a similar design in my "spare" time. My version is a bit shorter in the blade with a longer handle as I've designed it to accompany me into the backcountry. I've been posting vids of my progress on my channel. Keep it up. Take care, and God bless.
You know I've been thinking of getting a large survival knife. For a knife made by hand that is an INCREDIBLE price and I will definitely pick one up soon... Soon as I get that M&P Compact, Serpa Holster, SCAR 17, and I really need to stop watching TH-cam videos. My wish list is getting insane!
@JimmieGuy1 The information was for you if you send in your knife. Ask before you send your knife about there process. I assume your knife already has a handle. Yes, I could assemble ( epoxy , pin, sand,) the handle afterwards. As stated, the price is too high for me to consider as a business not to mention added turn around time.
@JimmieGuy1 I viewed there home website and it appears you have to send them your part to be coated. I am guessing it is about $80 added on to the price of the knife and an extended wait time for customers if I have to wait on them. Does not appear that it would be good for my business with the added cost and added turn around time. Before you send them your knife, check with them so that your handle is not damaged as it involve an oven.
@DefMunky75 In Texas, They are legal to carry if you are camping etc. You can also take machete's and axes with you camping. I would not go to a grocery story carrying any of them.
Nice Kukri knife!!! I'm looking for one that's better than my Cold Steel, it came with no edge on it from the factory and they forgot to "bake on" the protective finish so I'm gonna force a patina on it. I guess I won't buy any more Cold Steel products with that lack of quality control. I'll probably just get a Condor or Tramonti?
Anyone who buys quality gear knows that this is a GREAT deal.Just think a hundred years ago a good knife cost what you made in 2 or 3 days of work, that is still the case.
@DefMunky75 A gun in its most simplistic form is a tool for protection and it's purpose is to kill, doesn't necessarily have to be people. I would use it to protect my life, my family, loved ones, friends and maybe even a stranger such as yourself or maybe to put some meat in the freezer. It may be disquieting to you but it is what it is. Much like a hammer, saw, knife, fire extinguisher, wrench-all are tools designed with a purpose and the end result depends on who wields that tool.
realy, realy well done review. Unfortunately i wont be able to buy this knife right now but i can tell a good knife when i see one so i will save up. thanks for the info.
Hello, I liked your video and even more of your survival knife ... won another writing friend on your channel. I practice buschcraft here in Brazil for years and I intend to purchase a knife or fabricate these my own ... a hug.
@MrJapaneseboy1111 I have considered this. It is difficult and expensive to get stag that is large enough for the handle. I cannot get it in large quantities and so could not offer it as a normal item.
:) I always fancy a khukuri knife with a difference to others or having any knife that's different and can out last many blades and that's a nice chopper ! With some hand to hand combat vids to practice
To me a Bowie is a purpose built tool of death. That knife is a work blade. Esee junglas, the CS Trailmaster and similar blades are large survival blades. This is just my opinion. If it's a fighting knife, than it needs guards and catches.
In what part of the movie "The Hunted" did they use this knife? Most of the time they were making their knives in the field out of rocks or metal found. You are talking about the movie with Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones right?
First of all that is one real pretty blade, second have you ever used a real machette not the one they sell at walmart but a real one i suggest you get a hold of an ontario knife brand machette the 18" model you will be impressed with how much work can be done with little effort with a good quality sharp machette and they only run around $20.
it looks like a mini kurkri, I thought about buy a kurkri, but not from cold steel, maybe save up and get one from the nepal website, there original and come with two extra smaller knifes for food processing
i noticed in other pictures of this knife on the net, that the handle and finger choil area have a lot of variation from piece to piece. Did you ask for that style or do you just "get what you get"?

I love the music. That music alone takes you back in time. Great Video!!!!!!!!
Bought one of these almost 10 years ago after your watching your video. Its really a great knife!

I must say, Sootch, excellent review, great looking knife, but giving it to your son at the end of the video and seeing his expression -- PRICELESS!!
What a great community, and what a great surprise for Sootch! Oh yeah, and what a great knife!
Your kids expression was priceless. Great looking knife. Hopefully he'll let you borrow it sometime.

great review and really cool seeing the smile on the kids face!
@thedefinitive Thank you. It went through 7 design changes and 9 months of testing.
I've always liked the look of that Frank Bowie. I wish I'd have come up with the design!
That handle does look absolutely massive though. Maybe too much so for my tastes. I'd defintely want a slightly thinned down version I think.
amazing blade. like a cross between a tom brown tracker and kukri. it's brilliant

that thing is just awesome!
its bad handmade
@AirsoftVeteran96 I use a ceramic rod . It is small light and easy to carry.
I bought one and I love it! Great review!
@volumesk8 Thank You for your service. Kukri blades are excellent tools.
@SENGVIN 5160 - Leaf spring from trucks. I should check this video more often. apologies for the late reply.
That sword was coincidentally the same weapon Jonathan Harker used in the classic "Brahm Stoker's Dracula".

@mcafee1971 ... Sorry about that I meant another knife, not the Frank Bowie, I have two of those...great knife.
Nice Kukri knife!!!

Your son is a lucky man. I hope it does him good. your a good dad sootch.
this is nothing like the tracker. it actually looks useful.
That knife looks really stout. Hope Sootch Sr. gets a lot of use out of it!
Look at the Condor Heavy Duty Kukri. If you dont live in a dry environment, you may want to get it cerakoted since it's high carbon and prone to rust.
@DefMunky75 A gun in its most simplistic form is a tool for protection and it's purpose is to kill, doesn't necessarily have to be people. I like it . I went over to his site . Did he stop making this knife ? I didn't see this one on his site .
Thumbs up on you two guy's video
Have you thought of a corrosion resistant coating as an option? Since they are work knives. Would help the maintenance of the knife.
Great looking blade. Question, how does one go about putting a edge back on that kind of blade?
realy, realy well done review. Unfortunately i wont be able to buy this knife right now but i can tell a good knife when i see one so i will save up. thanks for the info.
@jrpd373 At 2:11 provides blade length. At 2:38 displays 21 ounces.at the top right of the video.
Nice fireplace, very safe.
BTW: teach your soon how to start a fire with flint and tinder, he'll thank you!

@MrJapaneseboy1111 I have considered this. It is difficult and expensive to get stag that is large enough for the handle. I cannot get it in large quantities and so could not offer it as a normal item.
Wow that custom is beautiful! The spine would work great on a flint rod too..how do these perform compared to the kabar and cold steel lookalikes?
:) I always fancy a khukuri knife with a difference to others or having any knife that's different and can out last many blades and that's a nice chopper ! With some hand to hand combat vids to practice
@JimmieGuy1 Yes, for next year. I personally gun blue mine.
I would consider buying this knife, but since you said only 4 are made a year, I am thinking there is going to be a long back order after this review.
@Urudrim Thank you.
To me a Bowie is a purpose built tool of death. That knife is a work blade.
Esee junglas, the CS Trailmaster and similar blades are large survival blades. This is just my opinion. If it's a fighting knife, than it needs guards and catches.

Khukuri house has a 3 chirra mini 8" or a panawal 8" if you want a smaller Kukri.
Hello Sootch did you ever do a review on the "REDEMPTION" yet sir? I like how she looks and would love to see how she handles clearing wood sir.
@B1oz Yes, I can make it for Spain, but it would be expensive to ship.
How does this knife compare to the SOG Creed? I buy knives to use them so I wouldn't be afraid of using it. It's made to be used.
Really dad. Lol priceless ! Like a kid in the candy shop. Great vid and that's one sexy blade.
When I served in the army last year I used the kukri
Very cool!
What a decent and wonderful way of life.
@thedefinitive I completely understand. Maybe one of your friends can buy you one for Christmas.
@Waverip11 I will look for it. I am curious about this edge. It is ground on one side only. I would like to see how it chops, batons, etc.
Hmm i could buy 3 of these for the price of the fallkniven A1 i've been eyeing off currently, Decisions...
Heck, its so cheap i can get maybe both...
great vid! beautiful knife!
First of all that is one real pretty blade, second have you ever used a real machette not the one they sell at walmart but a real one i suggest you get a hold of an ontario knife brand machette the 18" model you will be impressed with how much work can be done with little effort with a good quality sharp machette and they only run around $20.
Love this Video and Review... It reminds me of my Father and I...
Great job,
Stiletto :)
Yea, it's like a Tracker Style Survival Knife... Real nice...
Stiletto :)
I want one
seems he no longer makes these.
it looks like a mini kurkri, I thought about buy a kurkri, but not from cold steel, maybe save up and get one from the nepal website, there original and come with two extra smaller knifes for food processing
i noticed in other pictures of this knife on the net, that the handle and finger choil area have a lot of variation from piece to piece. Did you ask for that style or do you just "get what you get"?
Grande Ferramenta! Parabéns!
was I the only one worried he would slice his hand open with that kukri blade facing him?
looks too nice to even use
