As a jazz vibraphone player it makes sense to study the masters; Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Gary Burton. But I must admit I spent more time listening to other instrumentalist like Pat Metheny , Keith Jarrett and Bill Frisell and even more time listening to singers like Al Jarreau, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Simon, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Elvis Presley (to name a very few).
To me, the voice is the ultimate instrument. It has almost unlimited possibilities of expression and is in that regard the complete opposite of the vibraphone, which is a very mechanical thing. To make the vibraphone sing with the expressiveness of the voice, is to me one of the biggest challenges as a vibraphone player.
Air is what we breath, but it also means "song" in Italian as in the word aria. "Air" is me trying to sing through the vibraphone.
