I was playing the original 1972 edition treble clef part. I did miss some notes. I had a real hard time reading the music and since have gotten new glases and spent the last 2 years practicing and practicing and practicing......

Thank you Daryl. I have listened to both Trevor Groom and Steven Mead as conducted by the composer since performing this 2 years ago. I recently performed this in recital for the 2nd time and studied the tempi very carefully.
Listen to the 1991 performance by Groom and study both the 1972 and 1991 scores. The tempi for the 1st and 2nd movements have increased substantially! Groom plays the adagio in the 2nd movement at 1/16 = 86 instead of 76. He plays the poco piu moto at 90.

Sounds good. I'm thinking about playing this concerto myself. Good luck with the third movement!

I was playing a 1980 Besson Sovereign when this was recorded. I now play a new Buffett-Besson Prestige. I use a Denis Wick 4AL mouthpiece.I have been playing euphonium for 48 years continuously, but just started taking lessons this last tyear so that I could start playing more seriously.

@FlaEuph Actualy, both the 1st and 3rd movements are listed on the british ABRSM exam syllabuses as grade 8.

You need to check your own tempi. The moderato is supposed to start at 80. I was a bit fast (92-94). The piu tranquillo is supposed to be at 69 and I was about right. The meno mosso is supposed to be at 116. I was a bit slow, more like 102 to 107. Also re-check your comments on the articulation. I performed this after a week of workshop with Roland Froescher who had studied the piece directly with Joseph Horovitz. The EXTREMELY live perfromance hall makes stacatto hard to hear.

@musician1887 Hi there. I always play the high concert C open (not 1st valve). On my Besson and Sterling euphoniums this slots quite nicely. Most horns have a good Bb, C (both open), Db (2nd valve), and Eb (1st valve). The B natural (2 or 1-2), D (open or 2), and E natural (2d) above high Bb are often quite problematic.

listen to trevor groom play this whole piece young man especially the 2nd movement, Horovitz conducts it so he should know what he wanted from the piece as he wrote it. how wise the young.

unfortunatly, ive looked into the 4 valves, i was going to use one for an Allstate Audition last year but it broke, which sucked cuz i had the fingers memorized for 4 valves, thats probably why i didnt make it last year.

When you want to hear the third part of this concerto, just watch this: /watch?v=8QcrndKKHbA
I've played it about a half a year ago, and I want some more reaction to it. So please leave a message there. Thanks to everyone of you!

well, according to either the National District audition guidelines or just the Vermont District guidlines you arent allowed to do the All State solo, but i was an exception since the rule wasnt well advertised since it was just recently announced. I have a Yamaha, i dont know the model, its very bland, im looking into a four valve, but i spend more money on my guitars to really care about spending on the Euphonium!

no i did not have my auditions yet and i did dislike the piece before i started taking lessons from one of Vermonts finest Euphonium players, Phil Mears. I think my audition is in January, have you had yours yet?

to the performer, are you playing in Treble or Bass clef. The reason why i ask is becuase you seldom play notes that differ from my Bass clef, now they may be product of mistake but they fit the piece. Oh and good performance by the way, i love to play this song.

Hi there!! I'm a sophmore in high school and working on this piece...any advice for the run at the end?? I can play it decently, but the last line ascending to the C gets me every time. Should I use first valve for it, or play it open? And how should I go about it? Thanks!!
