  • Update January 2022: Kuhns Mfg. is Now Norden Mfg.
We were finding it harder and harder to find help willing to work in the hot summer sun loading hay manually onto hay wagons so after a lot of consideration, we decided to invest in the Kuhns hay accumulator and grapple system. Here's my unsolicited review where you can to see what I thought of the purchase and whether it was worth it or not. If you're not familiar with this type of hay equipment, the Kuhns Mfg LLC website describes their accumulator as "a system that uses gravity and a simple mechanical system to efficiently arrange small square bales into a group...It uses no hydraulics, electronics, or chains." The cubes of 10 square bales are picked up by a tractor with a grapple -- also from Kuhns -- and placed on the hay wagon. We and our extended family will likely continue having horses to feed and efficiency is key going forward. We are not getting any younger so we invested a substantial amount into this equipment. See if it was worth it!
See my video from the first day we used the equipment including the grapple "New Hay Equipment In Action" • New Hay Equipment in A...

how does it do on hills or slightly steep ground?

We have had mixed success on hilly terrain . You have to keep an eye in it ,that it will trigger and release the load of ten. We have even gone to the extent when we are bailing on the hilly sections to have some one follow behind in our 4x4 to trip the latch if it fails to do so on its own. All you have to do is kick the trigger release with your foot even while it is still moving. Other than that we have had great success with the accumulator and grapple .

maybe a dumb question, but do those things fold down for better storage or for driving down the road?
Love the gravity fed design of these, but they appear to be a little cumbersome to transport and store.

It is short enough to drive it down the road, and they took that into account with the hitch. Ours stays on the farm but it is designed to go down the road with lights and everything.

Brian thanks for watching. We were lucky ,we ordered our accumulator before steel prices went up more than a year ago. The price was a consideration but we have been contemplating becoming more efficient for years.
