  • In 1976 Robert Altman’s unofficial protégé Alan Rudolph directed this knowing dissection of Angelenos with an appropriately Altmanesque cast including Keith Carradine (in a near reprisal of his womanizing turn in Nashville), Sally Kellerman and Sissy Spacek (whose break-out role as Carrie was the same year). Rudolph, having punctuated his long and admirable directing career with a series of artful films, is also a painter, mounting several successful exhibits of his work over the last few years.

I remember seeing this film years ago, and it did strike me at the time as very much like an Altman film. But l also distinctly thinking that the Baskin music was absolutely horrible. After the viewing and some research, l found an article that claimed that it was intentionally bad. If true, it was a masterful, deadpan move, but l can't see why the filmmakers would take such a risk with a film that was so difficult to market in that era. But l saw it when l was in my twenties, and would be anxious to see it again today through a very different set of eyes.

Only watching this now: I have a copy of Welcome To L.A. from Amazon Spain. I think it's a great film and, yes, one of Rudoph's best!

I loved this movie the first time I saw it when it was released and have seen it many times since. The ensemble cast is terrific with memorable performances from everyone.

I saw it when it came out, didn't like it. But may give it another chance based on Larry's
Rec and that Richard Baskin was very kind to me once.

you know, I have actually never seen this movie. It's been recommended to me a bunch of times, but I've always passed it up. This is probably the 30th person in the last 4 months and I've told me that this film is excellent. So, if it gets that much positive feedback from people that I like, I eventually take a look at it.

Geraldine Chaplin is so beautiful. I have never been wild about this film, I found it dragged when compared to Nashville...no Karen Black.

Sally Kellerman is HOTHOTHOT! But this movie is a little hard pressed to garner much sympathy or support for its characters. Always like Keith Carradine a lot. Heck, the whole family ! The goatee is ridiculous looking and the songs aren't "I'm Easy"
I wanna be with ya Larry, but I remember this movie as a bit of a chore.

For all I know, Richard Baskin may be a terrific guy personally, but he's a lousy songwriter and a worse singer. His droning, nasal voice makes me want to clean out my ears with Lysol.

His music ruined the movie for me.

It’s true. His voice made me angry and sad, and it took me right out of the film a number of times.
