John Entwistle of The Who played Thunderbirds at one point, but he didn't like them, so he had a custom built bass that had a Thunderbird body with Fender P-Bass neck. I think he had a couple of Fenderbirds before switching to Alembic basses. Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament has also played with Fenderbirds.
I know a friend that fixed neck dive and balanced his Thunderbirds . It involves a steel rod coming forward from the top cutaway aproximatley 7-8 inches and attaching the strap at the end . This re distributes the balance point . No dive at all .
Excuse me? You think all of his followers are men? I'm a straight chick who's been a bass player for a few decades. I personally thought the pic of the sl*t on her guitar was pretty sad. You must really hate yourself to post yourself up online like that. BUT how I feel about that pic is irrelevant because I understand that most of the people who follow here are guys so I just scroll on by not offended but understanding the majority here are going to like the pic. I only commented because you appear to think that it's all guys here and it's not. 😊 👍
I have owned a charvel star for years, it has crazy neck dive. To remedy it, I took a karabiner clip and used it to hook the strap to my belt loop on my jeans. Worked like a charm, just remember to unclip it before putting the guitar down or you’ll be singing soprano for the next few days. Make sure you the strap doesn’t fail on the other end either, or you’ll flash the crowd…
A little off topic but I position the bottom end of the strap across the bottom of the bass. That along with repositioning the strap button relieves about 80% of neck dive. Love the sound of these basses.
I was playing a gig recently with the wonderful Goth band Kælan Mikla. Their bassist Margrét Rósa plays an Epiphone Thunderbird. It was the first time I ever saw a TB up close and bloody hell, that headstock is huge! It's almost the size of the body. Explains the neck dive.
I got an Epiphone Embassy for this exact reason: same pickups and pickup setup, but in a more traditional looking body that plays a lot nicer and doesn't neck dive. Of course, if you want to look of a thunderbird this is not it, but I love the way the Embassy looks as well and most importantly it sounds just as good and unique as a thunderbird.
The best T-Birds are the neck through models, they have a massive laminated resonance block which slightly tapers out towards the tail, and that more or less solves the neck dive issue. The only real issue is that they typically only have active electronics ( which I can’t stand tbh ) The bolt on neck t-birds are just atrocious in their balance.
On my guitars that have a slight neck dive,I add a 1/2inch spacer under the upper horn strap button.Possible to add more of needed.Just have to use a much longer screw.
My Epi T'bird's previous owner stuck the strap buttons in different places. The neck button is through the rear plate(where the body/neck are bolted) & the bridge button is high up on the corner. Actually means fitting a fairly long leather strap makes it hang around your nads like Joey Ramone, which suits my long orangutan arms & stance. Absolute steal at £140!!
I built my own bass starting with a thunderbird body. I cut the body shape a little different and it was perfect except the neck dive. It’s all about where you put the strap lugs.
It's just a matter of balance. Any behs that neck dives isn't worth owning. Hand fatigue & carpal tunnel are just two issues... A large 6 inch lag bolt to extend the behs body for the strap to hold the behs in the proper position would also work.
My favorite Thunderbird player is John Entwistle. He played a Fenderbird (Thunderbird with Fender neck). Shame on you 🫵 Danny for not including him in your clip!!!
I'm thinking of getting back into bass. My 1st and only bass was a thunderbird.i loved it, but it was the most awkward bass to try and learn on. What would you guys recommend as a solid beginners bass?
I put my strap(also thick) through the top Snap Straps on top the shoulders of my leather and it works great never had an issue with neck dive.ive always called it enecktile disfunction 😂
OK, fair enough. I've heard Nikki Six get mentioned before but just for comic relief. You gotta admit it's funny when Chris hits himself in the face with his guitar and Kurt kicks him in the ass. Talk about adding insult insult to injury.
@@tracygalvin6742 LOL OMG I hope Danny sees this comment it is perfect fehs yes dude!! *Ironically Krist did not get hit in the fehs by his Thunderbird :( *sadface*
Well, ask Rob from Brooks basses how to fix it. He just made a double neck thunderbird bass. With a 4 and a 12 string. It doesnt have a neckdive. Its all about lightweight tuners.
thanks for using rickkk mayall as nikki sixx. my thunderbird used to do that too. i used to call it "tomahawk chop". violin basses, rickenbackers, and bassoons will do that as well
I play SG guitars and bass and while people complain about it, I’ve honestly never had a problem, even though the bass body is the SAME SIZE as the guitar version, so the dive is much worse. By the way, what exactly did you type into Bing? Just so I don’t make the same mistake, you understand.
I never had neckdive problems, always thought it was cuz i just kept getting lucky with the guitars I own, even my SG, but having heard long ago that thicker straps made of a grippier material was a solution, I already put 3" straps on everything almost since i started, I've just been dodging the neckdive bullet unknowingly the whole time :P I do now have a neckdive issue because I had a custom Rickenbacker style bass made from one of those Chinese companies, and I asked them to add 24 frets on it, well, it jutted the neck out the body more, and it's actually a great bass, especially for $380 shipped, but she's basically a sit-down-only instrument :/ I got it for recording anyway, I don't play live, so it's actually not the biggest deal.
i got one of those. yeah not a bad rickenbacker deal for under $400. once i switched the pickups and strap buttons, it was much better. it was so close to a genuine one, but i sold it and bought a new rick eventually.
@bite-marx the Ric is my absolute favorite body and headstock shape for bass, but I play death metal tuned down to drop Bb, so my Ric is very not traditional. I had them make me a 5 string neck-thru Ric, and because I need to be able to palm mute, I requested no pickup cover plate, and instead, I went with Music Man style pickups and bridge, it actually came out great looking (and sounding), I've had it for like 12yrs now, and have come to prefer the look of mine over authentic ones surprisingly. It's a blue burst flame top with matching headstock, the back is flat black, but the 7- piece maple/(idk what second wood is) neck is natural finish all the way down to the end of the thru body, rosewood board with traditional Ric triangle pearl inlays, the whole thing is satin, cream binding on the body and neck, black pickguard, black hardware, the guy asked if i wanted the logo etched on the truss rod cover, I said no, it was pretty fun specing it out with the guy and finally getting it and playing it!!
I have the epiphone version and the E string is significantly quiter than the rest.. tried different amps but still the same.. any ideas? Maybe an issue with the pickups?
I love my thunderbird (greco copy). Sounds huge and plays like a dream. But the neck dive does get a wee bit tiresome. Thanks Danny for showing how a simple wardrobe adjustment can fix the issue. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off out to buy some short shorts.
Wide strap + leather jacket to fix neck dive just ends up as neck dive + front of jacket dive. Maybe that just me. Just move the bridge end strap button. It’s not that hard. If you’re a collector and worried about effecting resale value then you’re not worried about it being a valid instrument and you should stop buying basses and making the prices go up for musicians.

Leather straps pretty much eliminate neck dive as they typically have more friction than other fabric straps
