When I was a sophomore in college, I went down to the Louisiana oil patch to make money in the summer. They sent me to Lafayette. I was "that Yankee girl" there, lol. Can you imagine a teenager on their own in Lafayette? It was a scream. I'd never heard of Cajuns before. This was the 70's -- the Lone Star Cafe was still in full swing and I went to many Fais Do-dos out in the countryside. One of them they were auctioning off a literal oil derrick. Amazing food, amazing music and absolutely wonderful people.
I'm glad you had a great experience in Lafayette. You definetely have to come back for Festival International one of this years. It is a wonderful city. Best food in Louisiana for sure!
Growing up in New Orleans 14 years, then settling in Baton Rouge for another 25 I must say Lafayette is the only city in Louisiana where the government/media division tactics don't work. God Bless Lafayette and the people in it for sticking together and not falling for the race bait

Lafayette Louisiana, the heart of the french Louisiana. Vive la Louisiane!
I thought french was extinguiched in this state, but as a frenchman I'm proud of these guys who keep alive french language
However, the majority of the people who live in or are from Lafayette, cannot speak the French language, only a small few people understand some of the language, even the people in their 70’s and 80’s. However, drive to Ville Platte, Louisiana and the majority of the people in their 70’s and 80’s speak and understand Cajun French language, still have some living who only spoke French until they started school and were forced to speak only English, under threat of and actual punishment. I know because that was my father’s experience and my mother. I am 63 years old and my primary language is English, although I learned to speak Cajun French from my parents and grandparents. My maternal grandmother only spoke French and she insisted we speak French with her and told us to disregard the efforts to extinguish our French language. She only had a 3rd grade education but was a wise woman. The French language was “rescued” by CODIFIL, started in Lafayette, I am thankful for this but in my daily life experience I rarely meet middle age and young people who are able to speak French.

Im half Cajun. My kids are 3/4, wife, French/Arcadian. They know the traditions by heart and they absolutely love it all.

You can't be half Cajun. Cajun is not a nationality. Cajun is a term for born and raised in southern Louisiana in Cajun Country. You can be any nationality and be a Cajun. You can be French, Spanish, White, Black... or any other combination of relative blood lines.. There are many misnomers concerning Cajuns and Creoles... Creole is no part black nor is it a nationality. Creole is a person born to a foreign born father or mother that married or not that immigrated to Gulf Coast, New Orleans, etc... and had a child with a native born mate... look it up.. The term Créole was originally used by French Creoles to distinguish people born in Louisiana from those born elsewhere, thus drawing a distinction between Old-World …

It seems like in Lafayette, availability wouldn't be too high with rentals. It seems sought after, traits of these popular texas areas like Austin or Houston. A lot of road rage potential.. like Houston for sure.
St. Julien's of St. Martinville are proud Cajun/Creoles and are very happy to live and work in this great area which provided the religion and education that contributed to our success, health and happiness in life.

Lafayette is one of those cities that forgot it was a city. A small city with a country town mentality. That's the best way to describe Lafayette. Louisiana's fifth largest city. 337 for life.

I don't see reality like that present in this video even from a passing through town standpoint. I suggest they stop with videos like this also. It's great to know you guys have community pride, I just see more a culture full of vultures on the road driving or it reminds me of Houston. Probably because of this kind of advertising.

The French spoken in Canada is very similar to Cajun French. I have lived in both south Louisiana and Quebec, and have always been struck by that. When i visited France, the language was very difficult to understand for me. English is my first language, but I am pretty proficient in French.

@@MotuPictures Very similar, but some differences too. Quebecers are friendly enough, but a bit more reserved and formal than Cajuns, in my observation. Cajuns are much more gregarious, and likely to engage in conversation with a total stranger. I've had conversations with total strangers in gas stations in Louisiana where I left thinking that I had a new best friend, LOL. Cajuns are by far some of the most outgoing and friendly people you'll meet anywhere. That said, there are places that people know not to go if you are not known there. Ville Platte comes to mind. The people there had a rep for violence against strangers. Then the food is the big difference. The food in south Louisiana is one of the world's great cuisines IMO. There is nothing comparable in Canada, again, in my personal opinion. BTW, as pointed out, the Cajun language and much of the culture is disappearing, or was when i lived there. Canadians are much more dedicated to maintaining their language and culture.
Both places are great places to live, if you can stand the heat and humidity of Louisiana sommers, or the bone-chilling cold of Canadian winters.

We haven't been to Quebec yet, but we are actually planing for winter 2022, so we'll get to have a better grasp of the culture. I agree about the food, thought. It is very hard to have a superior cusine than the Cajun one. Cajun food is one of the tastiest food I have ever tried, even for us being from South America.

@@MotuPictures My Mother and I found the Canadian culture to be more similar to our culture in Ville Platte (French for flat town).

I've lived near Baton Rouge my whole life but I'd like to come spend more time in Lafayette. I'm right in between 2 awesome cities(Lafayette and New Orleans) and yet there's not much to do in BR

so many people in the oil and gas industry that might live here a few years while supporting their company's Gulf of Mexico (GOM) asset and then get transferred to their corporate office. . .Houston typically or other places. . .but when they retire, many of them return to Lafayette due to the absolute love they developed in the few years they worked and lived here.

Shelley Tuohy- that Vic Vinegar person has been leaving some strange comments on this vid. Ignore him. Please come to Lafayette. We’d love to have you. Once the pandemic is controlled, come for Festival Internationale are ou days April 23-27th. The downtown area has about 4 huge outdoor stages showcasing French music from around the world with food courts with local cuisine, arts and crafts pavilions and more. You can visit Vermillionville to see some original Cajun homes and learn about the culture and even schedule a swamp tour of the Achafalaya swamp and see some alligators and local birds in their national habitat. If you come any other time than Festival or Mardi Gras, there might not be enough to do to make it worth your while.

Hello Marvin. The older people do like granpas and grandmas, the younger generations not anymore. The French is getting lost. Fortunately, CODOFIL has a program to try to recover the Cajun french by teaching kids in school

@@negretemarvin you will definitely find some people who speak French. Just not many. But it is definitely worth going to both places to check it out. It's a unique experience. I definitely suggest it!
A lot of the surrounding towns still have the Creole French. Breaux Bridge, Abbeville, St. Martinville, etc around the Acadiana region. Proud Creole here.

He speaks to his family and friends in French my oldest son is fluent in French also my parents spoke French and great grandmother I don't speak French unfortunately but I understand what is said and I can say a few words and phrases I am from Lafayette Louisiana beautiful city lots of culture. French is mainly spoken in Southern Louisiana where the Cajuns are Breaux Bridge Catahoula Cecilia Henderson Etc

We need production or we will cease to exist Our oilfield jobs are gone And restaurants cant save us, only feed us while our town dies....thank God we will have shipping and receiving. But realistically we need more. I love you Acadiana.
Thus far in Lafayette i have not been picking up this vibe. Sorry to say.. if this is what it really was all over, it would be awesome but all I see is high traffic and that Houston sort of culture I didn't like crammed into a small space and people hurrying and driving like shit. No joke. And the fact it's a college town makes it like any other college town. I had to leave to go to an outside town to find a nice Italian buffet. A Greek one was shut down and a Cajun one was closed on the weekend. I didn't have many options to eat on a Saturday. Again just my experiences. I came from Lake Charles prior and racial tension did seem higher there, I don't get that vibe in Lafayette. Traffic in Lafayette though is horrendous. Judging by this video though and if you saw me, you'd think I was a native on appearance.

My great 8th removed grand father was one of the first settlers to arrive from the south of France Born 18 Oct 1753 in Castelnaudary, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France Marriage 14 Oct 1790 • Opelousas, St Landry Parish, Louisiana to ..... (1770 LA-1827 LA) I've traced my family on both sides to the 1500s ... Seems many Cajuns have their true heritage wrong... seems few know the real history of Cajun country... it's every bit as much Spanish country as it is French if not more so.. If you are really interested then do the work... I did..
I-10 and internet killed the Cajun culture,In the 80's and early 90's everyone west of the Atchafalia had a thick Cajun accent whether they spoke French or not. Kinda sad it's rare now

@@RajaMCool you're not wrong in many parts. Lake Charles so far being the worst in my travels. In Lafayette now and gotta go to Baton Rouge next then NO. I don't think I could move to LA. Some lovely people but also a lot not. Might be 50/50 people wise and 90/10 on the food.
@@ladywayn1973 Lafayette and Baton Rouge are quite nice. Some areas are pretty sketchy. Louisiana as a whole is much better than many other states!

AND we don't take a back seat to the cuisine of New Orleans either. . .our gas stations have better food than the restaurants in Houston. True story.
I couldn't find much food on a Saturday here so that story seems a little lop sided. And saw absolutely NO gas station food worth a shit. Passing through. I don't think i could move to a place like this plus rude drivers i wouldnt mind brake checking and a lot of traffic.. i was shocked to find that.

@Philip Earl McG no i was right in Lafayette Louisiana. Some rude ass people out places in this town. It's like Houston or Atlanta to me. I almost had a showdown at the Target which is supposed to be a nice part of town too. It just shows. This guy looked at me I was like. Something ? He flew off the handle, a gay black dude with children cussing at me. He would have blindsided me if I had turned around for too long.
Would I suggest people move to Lafayette LA, the answer is no I would not.

Why amn’t my house in this?
Once again an attempt to describe Cajun country that leaves out much of it's true history. A large part of Cajun country history is the arrival of both French settlers from the south of France and the many prison hulks that arrived with prisoners ... long before the first black slaves arrived to the new world. They were not indentured Servants they were prisoners transported and sold by the King , it's way to much for me to describe and explain here. I've studied them for over 40 years.. Many Cajun families have no idea their great 5th to 7th removed grand parent or parents were sold as white slaves as convict prisoners.... that is how they ended up in the new world... some directly to the gulf coast shores some traveled south east from the Atlantic coast as free and runaway slaves white European slaves..

I'm from Laffy, born and raised, and I feel the same way. The people here of European ancestry know THEIR history/lineage but they probably couldn't tell you much of the indigenous cultures that were well established long before European arrival.
Ya I want more of that caramel complexion too and some of the darker. Wanna see those. Got to see those. Brown pride! The browning of America has come and time to pay your reparances white folk!

This seems like the real city. I feel the vibe in traffic. It's terrible besides the fact it looks nicer than Lake Charles. It's still not going to be a place I'm going to relocate to . I wish a place would be as good as this video presents it to be, I just don't really really think it's this one.. not in 2023 anyhow.

I love love my city, born and raised here! This documentary was poorly done! They speak about the modern times more than they do about the actual history of our home. There’s better documentaries about our home than this one

Lake Charles has less traffic and probably cheaper but more racial tension it seems like between blacks and whites.
