He probably made 5 grand that day so it was at least close to what he made all season. I would do autograph shows all the time if I was a star athlete too. Fans love when players sign and it's great easy money.
A couple of years ago I was telling my wife that if I could get somehow make things work financially that the one thing I'd like to do is make a documentary about MiLB. Everything from the relative poverty and the day jobs, to the daily grind, to the ambition and the hunger--the agony, the ecstasy, all of it. I wanted to make a nonfiction, long-form version of Bull Durham. And (although I've just started watching) I've found that it already exists! Thank you John Fitzgerald for doing this and bringing to fruition many thousands of baseball fans' hopes.
A friend of mine showed me one of Wally's rants, and I had to see more. This coming payday I am buying the fully uncensored DVD and Wally Backman's Greatest Hits. We have a minor league here in OKC. We were the Oklahoma Redhawks, But now we're the Dodgers. Loved this, sir. Thank you so much.
It is sad to dream of the Major Leagues and never be able to reach it. Steve Garrabrants started triple A and in a few years descended into Indy. His last year active was 2008. Truly Sad.
BobcatJoeGutfeld I'd love to put them all back up. But alot of people invested in this show and I can't give away all the episodes on TH-cam - it wouldn't be fair to the people that believed in the show and invested their money on it. TH-cam ad revenue doesn't come close to what the show makes on each DVD sale.
Funny how they say Wally is an important part of the league then try to fire him 3 or 4 months later and the guy says he was frustrated by it then Wally says everybody was hunky dory about him going to the autograph show. Sounds like the management can't make their minds up.
At 15:14, I know that this movie is from 2007, however, I don't think that even back then, Major League Baseball had it's slogan as "What a game" like it is on the scoreboard in the background. Someone hasn't been updating some of the ads in that stadium for awhile.
John Fitzgerald That was my fault, I put the wrong time it's actually at 15:14 where I was trying to point out the ads on the scoreboard in the background. I also edited my original comment. Sorry again.
capsman09 No need to apologize. Thanks for the comments... Actually, that's a really great point. That sign was there from several years before. There hadn't been a game played in that ballpark for years. It would be interesting to find out exactly when "What a Game" was an MLB slogan.
Great job...something about seeing it in full (1/10 of it anyways) that just makes me appreciate your work even more...are you involved in any new projects?
I was at a season opening Spring Training game at the Charlotte Co. Stadium years ago when the Rangers were playing there and the pregame fireworks scared a very large egret out of its nest in one of the light standards. My brother and I were laughing about it and then a minute or two later we saw black smoke billowing out from behind the outfield wall. Sure enough, lots of smoke and flames could be seen. Then here come the fire trucks. The fireworks set the woods on fire. LOL!
Thanks for your comment. Is it just the intro music you don't like? I tried to make that music really campy like a 1980s sitcom... The other music is supposed to be pretty straightforward (funny music for funny scenes, dramatic for dramatic scenes, etc.)... What do you think? Thanks again!
so john there are 2 episodes that i wasnt able to watch at all.. they are behind a paywall with no option to pay.. i mean theyre listed as 49 cents??? that has to be some sort of mistake... id gladly pay however there is no way to even give you the money.. as for purchasing a dvd well, dvds arent really my thing but id certainly purchase a digital copy.
I love how all the background songs are sort of “off brand” versions of hits. I think I heard some Santana in there...a little super freak Edit: a bit of Green Day towards the end hahaha
@didoma73 - Thanks. I'm working on a new baseball project that I can't really talk about yet. I also just starting working with an existing web show called Be Your Own Fan TV. You can see our latest interview (with Boomer Esiason). Just search youtube for username byoftv
Im confused is the south coast league an independent league or is it apart of the minors. Because i remember in 1 episode someone was traded to the brewers organization which is a professional team. Could you clear things up for me?
EricMoranFilms The SCL was an independent professional league. It was not affiliated with MiLB but players were able to be bought by MiLB teams. That's what happened in episode 1 - Jared Sutton's contract was purchased by the Brewers.
i love the 80s feel of the intros. great job
Bring back all episodes please!!!!
Could the guy at 6:18 generate a bit more spit when he talks
Spencer .Calder came to the comments glad someone noticed
That's just what I was thinking lmao
I regret watching it on an iPad inches away from my face 😂
Wally made more money at that autograph show in one day than he did all year coaching this team

This reminds me of a movie in the 70's starring Robert Newman called "Slapshot". The movie was based on a hockey team called the Charlestown Chiefs.
John, wish you could do a series on The Southern Professional Hockey League.

holy crap. I was working outside of Prineville for 4 months and had no idea he lived there (or used to). that's bad ass
Thanks for sharing this for free ordered the DVDs after watching the first episode
Glad you like the series!

Love your channel. It's awesome you're uploading the full episodes now!
Great baseball documentary...keep up the great work!
Thanks!

Or calling the elderly to sell them more life insurance
Nice video. Wish someone could post the show The Pecos League on TH-cam.
Thanks for keeping some of the episodes on here. I just wish you put back all of the episodes on here.

+John Fitzgerald its 2015 nobody buys dvd's anymore. Let people buy it online somewhere then your "investors" will get even more revenue.
+Nic Ferragine It's not as easy as you think to sell an indie project online. Also, plenty of people still buy DVDs.
You are the professional here so ill take your word and i guess ill just have to buy the dvds and wait until christmas to watch them.
+Nic Ferragine Thanks. Merry Christmas.

I'm confused. Where do you see a scoreboard? 13:10 shows Wally Backman signing an autograph.

fun to watch and well put together. background music is a bit but no biggie

@whsportman94 - Only the first two episodes for now. The rest are on the DVD.

He's writing TH-cam comments in his mom's basement! Oh... wait... that's you. He's actually managing baseball games.
