David Lee Roth is a show man who if he didn't take this path into rock n' roll he would have been one of the biggest WWE superstars of all-time giving Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels runs for their money. He's a little south of crazy which is why we all loved him in the first place. He knows its not good but he doesn't care unlike Robert Plant who thinks he's pitch perfect and is damn serious about it all. I'd take Roth he's a tool but he makes us all smile.
For the record, people, I really like this, it shows his sense of adventure and humor. Don't criticize what you can't understand, friends...bravo, Dave!!
This is the last song you should be doing a bluegrass version of. The timings all wrong. So, what's next? Jiminy Cricket singing Iron Man on the new Wonderful World of Disney?
Actually this is awesome! Bluegrass is probably the most difficult genre of music to play or master. Plus this just shows Dave Lee Roth is versatile. You should check out bluegrass motorhead, ozzy, and metallica. Maybe I just enjoy a variety of music and respect musicians for wanting to try something different.
There are some interesting postings about this video. I personally had never seen it. And that is a good thing,..... "BECAUSE IT WAS EMBARRASSING TO WATCH!" What's next? Bod Dylan does early Madonna? The Stones cover the Monkee's catalog? Alice Cooper does Kenny G? HOLY CRAP!
I've seen a longer version of this (and without the voice off), that was really weird. And I'm being polite. I showed this to my siblings, they nearly cried (omg, we're getting sooooooo ... old !)
I think this is brilliant. It just proves that David Lee Roth can sing anytihing! It also proves he has the balls to have fun and try new thigs with his music. I love it. I just wish I could see it without the commentary! Love, Michelle
2021 Rules forever I'm David Lee roth and all the country singer s they play on 102.9 the wolf 🐺 forever promise to god. Steve Fikes Paul Stanley of kiss and all the rock n roll singer s they play on Kool 108 forever promise to god. Bye now 😁😷♥👍.
I still think he can sing anything. If you listen to both, you'll see he tok it down a notch for this arrangement. David Lee Roth is awesome! Thanks for your reply.
Heavens, I had no idea you had the inside scoop to the band! See, silly old me, I assumed that when Eddie and Dave both said that they were still getting along and were actually taking a break, that they were the ones to trust. Evidently I should have been listening to you all along. And while I'm at it, I had no idea that all those times I enjoyed Dave's work (like on the new album), that I was somehow "wrong!" I guess that retroactively takes away all my enjoyment.
@MrShayneOneill The reason for the comparison is because @fallenruins stated "Bluegrass is probably the most difficult genre of music to play or master." This is not accurate and warranted comparison to another improved based genre of music. I too play bluegrass and have a Bachelors of Music in jazz performance. It takes serious dedication to learn the penny whistle well. But would it not be reasonable to comment on a post stating the penny whislte was the hardest instrument to play and master?
I think this bluegrass version was a fun departure for Mr. Roth. I think he has way more class than people with nothing better to do than run down a music icon because they are jealous or insecure about themselves. David Lee Roth is an amazing and generous performer who truly gives to his audience. I love David Lee Roth with or without Van Halen.
@dmoorefsmfn No, he's not a bluegrass musician but it does show that he's willing to take a chance on shaking things up a bit, something which I have to give him credit for.
whats great is that while all the haters hate, DLR is living a better life than all of us combined. Once you found a hall of fame rock band, embark on a successful solo career, become a licensed and working EMT, climb a few mountains, learn the art of the Japanese sword and a few martial arts, then you can toss a little shade for a bluegrass cover. Until then, its you whos actually the joke here
@fallenruins Bluegrass is technically challenging but jazz is more difficult to master than bluegrass because of the more complex harmony involved and rapid chord changes.
this was good...i mean, dave is no a very skilled vocalist, but hes a great performer, full of energy and charisma. That's why he fits so good in a rock group.
Really? I didn't realize they lost all their power when THEY WERE THE #1 TOUR IN NORTH AMERICA OVER ALL OF YOUR FAVOURITE BANDS. This album is brilliant if you knew anything about anything, you'd know this.
@garydupuis This is an odd way to show his sense of adventure or humor. I think I understand it completely. It's a rocker trying to capitalize on a market trend. Just because he is singing this song over the top of a bluegrass combo does not make David Lee Roth a bluegrass musician. You can like it if you want to. I think it is pretty cheesy myself.
I wish Diamond Dave all the best in his rehab to kick the crack habit..... He is in rehab right.... Please.. tell me... after this performance he HAS to be in rehab right...... RIGHT?????
I love that "This is like a Saturday Night Live Skit".... totally awesome comment from the TV personalities..... Obviously Dave's voice is no better doing bluegrass. Sad as classic VH is just classis stuff. Shouldn't be comical like this.
Hey give him a break, If you want to ride off the success of one song for a few decades you need to rework it a few times. (if he changes it enough he won't have to pay any royalties)
I really don't get all the negativity about this. If you don't like it, that's cool, but "betrayal?" "Has been?" You can make plenty of criticisms about Dave's solo career outside of this little nugget here. ;) Anyway, he wasn't starting a new bluegrass career. He was just having fun doing a goofy version of his old hit. I don't see the need to get worked up over it.
Oh, that fine, fine line between really cool and really uncool. Peewee Herman crossed it. Marylin Manson crossed it long ago. Axl, Tom Cruise, Metallica, Green Day, the list goes on. The only people who are permanently cool are Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Steven Tyler.
gokevink ur right.. im a singer and this is a technically remarkable vocal performance..aside from the entertainment value and "truerocknrollersdontgiveafuckwhat anyonethinks"ness of it!!
It brilliant! Creative, manic, funny, interesting.
thats what makes Dave the best.
I don't think I'd use the word 'creative' nor 'brilliant'

Whenever my friends and I need a good laugh we watch this clip.

i was just looking around youtube for DLR songs and found this, i think i'll enter "VH" in the search box from now on
That SHOULD be a SNL skit! itd be funny as hell!

Ugh. oh god. I am not a better man for having watched that.
I gotta scrub my brain now to get the whole experience out of my head.
For those who hate this....TO BAD! He is not your clown to amuse you! He has the freedom to whatever he wants!
Heavens, I had no idea you had the inside scoop to the band! OMG. I don't even know what to say. For once in my life, I am truly speechless.
this is awesome......
looks like he's having a great time!
PERFECT
jesus can we go back to the 80's again........ please....
I love the weatherpredictions on the bottom of the screen....lol

Is that Brad Davis flat picking in the background?
@dmoorefsmfn No, he's not a bluegrass musician but it does show that he's willing to take a chance on shaking things up a bit, something which I have to give him credit for.
man he's a great singer
Originally was performed on the Tonight Show (not sure when) - I recorded off the local morning news

Just can't shake the image of him doing split jumps on stage in tights for the 1984 video for this song... surreal.
I like it!
What are you talking about? this version is incredible!
@garydupuis Your opinion is noted. I can say that it looks like he is having fun...
@fallenruins actually dave just did what he always does...it is the musicians who are versatile.
@fallenruins Bluegrass is technically challenging but jazz is more difficult to master than bluegrass because of the more complex harmony involved and rapid chord changes.
Wow... thats.... awefull!
ok thanks for the info
I love this man, he should be wearing some cowboy spandex tho.........
I love DLR!!
amen
EXACTLY.
I've got to say this is the tightest DLR has hit vocal cues ever, ironically.
this was good...i mean, dave is no a very skilled vocalist, but hes a great performer, full of energy and charisma. That's why he fits so good in a rock group.
This hurts.
whats up with the flatulence at 0:36?
Dave what the ....anything to be in the faded light
this makes sense when you know more about dave's PT Barnum influence .. showbiz, baby
Really? I didn't realize they lost all their power when THEY WERE THE #1 TOUR IN NORTH AMERICA OVER ALL OF YOUR FAVOURITE BANDS. This album is brilliant if you knew anything about anything, you'd know this.
Me left ear enjoyed that alot :D
He he ... I actually like this version! : )
you got your head on straight man...sammy would never stoop so low as to do something clownish like this.
@garydupuis This is an odd way to show his sense of adventure or humor. I think I understand it completely. It's a rocker trying to capitalize on a market trend. The best singer ever
David Lee Roth is the only one
Lighten up folks, he's having fun.
This video has been brought to you by the good folks at Metamucil.
What is wrong with guy! I dont understand!
Why is he not with VH. What happend with the reunion?
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
RIP Jump ! dave just killed that song ...
"God grant me the power to see that Van Halen was better when David was lead singer."
just heard about this on VH1
it might work if Roth mellows it a bit
I wish Diamond Dave all the best in his rehab to kick the crack habit..... He is in rehab right.... Please.. tell me... after this performance he HAS to be in rehab right...... RIGHT?????
@LedWilde I hope so
@302zman I agree. I re-read my comment and whoah. I should lay off the rum.
Anyone else waiting for Dave to try one of his patent jump with the splits or a high kick and then fall and break his hip?
0:25 Out of Tune a little? anyway Cool!! I like this!!
actually, david lee roth CAN sing anything, he sung this a lot different than he did with van halen, id say he sang it much mellower in this version
the guy strummin the huge stand-up violin thing (sorry, my typical bands all play guitars) looks kinda like michael anthony.
if you complaining cause he's doing blue grass.....SO WHAT ? down through the years many rock artists went country.
testify...
I love that "This is like a Saturday Night Live Skit".... totally awesome comment from the TV personalities.....
Obviously Dave's voice is no better doing bluegrass. Sad as classic VH is just classis stuff. Shouldn't be comical like this.
@thebaldog1 one break.... cooooommminnn' uuup! lol
Did he lose a bet?
I have to agree, I do prefer Hagar also. It could be because I grew up listening to Van Halen with Sammy Hagar on vocals though.
This is actually cool. All of you dissing it are uncool.
Oh what a shame for this kind of talent
OMG is that 4 real... I guess he is playing at the Holiday Inn lounge now as well...
Good grief!
Hey give him a break,
If you want to ride off the success of one song for a few decades you need to rework it a few times.
(if he changes it enough he won't have to pay any royalties)
like some chessy lounge singer...pittttifffuullll...W T F
Anyone else think that Dave's performance in this video was inspired by the SNL skit where Bill Murray is a Lounge Singer?
I really don't get all the negativity about this. If you don't like it, that's cool, but "betrayal?" "Has been?" he should not be mocked even though this sucks he should not be mock he is still one of the best rock stars every
This song is on Eddie's IPOD
Oh, that fine, fine line between really cool and really uncool. Peewee Herman crossed it. Marylin Manson crossed it long ago. Axl, Tom Cruise, Metallica, Green Day, the list goes on. The only people who are permanently cool are Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Steven Tyler.
Thank god he and eddie worked it out. ( Though Long Live Chickenfoot!)
Drugs did wonders for this man - lol This is fucking great

@ simba, Lol. U are right!!!! Funny.
He dose look so much better with long hair.. he also needs his younger personality back!!!! He Should do his famous jump!!!!
