I tried staying loyal to a company. $1/hr raise every year. Then I just uploaded my resume to a recruiting agency. A month an a half later, I had interviewed 3 times for a 6-figure salary, and 1.5 weeks after that last interview, had an offer making nearly double my previous job's income. Don't stay any where long term; look at a job as at least a one year commitment, and no more than 3 years unless you're totally happy with your salary and work-life.
Jon, thank you for this video. I am 27 and I have been a project coordinator in the construction and infrastructure industry for the past 3 years. Im on my 4th company in 3 years. And honestly, im getting sick of it. I have realized this isn't what I enjoy. I enjoy working with and helping people and finding solutions to assisting people and ensuring their safe. I recently just received a job offer for construction health and safety and im super excited for it but yet hesitant. I am worried im not going to end up liking. I am also considering policing as a backup as it has always been a field that has intrigued. If there is one thing i can say ive learned about 20's. Is that you should honestly try everything and figure out what you're good at.
I was in government contracting and it forces you to change jobs because contracts end. Depending on your line of work hopping jobs may be normal. My first job out the Army was a government contracting job and the contract was lost to a competitor in 8 months. That is normal though. My strategy is to job hop a couple more times in the private sector and settle in when I get a leadership position. I've gone from 87k to 145k in 4 years since getting out of the Army. I switched jobs 4 times. You tell me who is winning... I'm only 29, but I agree that job hopping too much is not good. However, being paid underneath your worth is worse. Look out for yourself early on so in your 30s or later you are making higher pay. I think it's also important to point out that I have a Master's degree and have gotten 4 industry-recognized cyber security certifications in the last 4 years which has increased and validated my skillet.
Hey Jon! I left my first job (Tech Support) after 3 months to join a new job (Research Analyst). I'm 3 months in and I feel like hopping on Digital Marketing space. Is it too soon? What should I do? Please help. Thanks!
@@DrJonTam Thanks for your response. Currently I'm building my skill set in Digital Marketing, like various certification courses alongside my current job, which I'm not enjoying. I don't know how long can I work in here. I guess I have 2 options rn which are 1.) Get relevant skills for DM job & start applying for internships/jobs. 2.) Complete at least 1 year landmark at current workplace.
Which benefit is the best? Let me know!
I think finding clarity early on is the most important one.
Yep! For some, figuring out your passion is more important than money.

Yep! Need to always keep yours eyes opened for opportunities
I definitely did some job hopping in my 20s. Its a great time to explore what you like and don't like.
Definitely!
Thanks, Jon, couldn't agree more! I did my first engineering career hop from Stelco when I was 29, but I was seriously considering it when I was 27.
Yeah and it turned out to be a great choice right?
love your perepsective! so many people are against job hopping but you definitely showcase some of the benefits to doing so
It’s definitely situational and lots of upside to doing it when the time is right.
I've job hopped a lot in my now 30’s. Since this Pandemic. It is what it is
it is what it is

Great video - I definitely had my share of job hopping before finding the best soft/hard skill application.
For sure. You find your direction so much faster that way.
Thank you for this. I was planning for a job hopping after pandemic
Glad it was helpful!

@@vishxlbxthejx7239 Sounds like you got your answers right there.
I have had three jobs in three years, I feel horrible, do I have a problem?
What was the reason for the hopping? Like I said, there are lots of upsides
