  • Building and testing the Kanga Products FOXX-3 transceiver. This kit is great for beginners and has features few simple crystal controlled radios offer, like a sidetone and the ability to change frequency a little. One Watt is really not an obstacle, as you will see from the reports. Good as a survival radio? Not quite, but it is fun and beats nothing any day. www.kanga-prod... (tell Dennis I sent you!) Hi Gil, I to bought one of these some time ago they are a great little kit to build and operate in the field, one thing you should always do when building the kits is check the torords for inductance, it does make a big differance, when all of those cheap chineese kits hit the market years ago i bought two of them, pixie, frog sounds, forty 9er etc etc, the first one no checks made but they worked, the second attempt, inductance, voltages, capacitance, resistance, and some of the values checked and replaced were needed, it made a very big differance, buying components with half decent values percentage today is getting more difficult, enjoyed the video as always, have you solved the prolem from your last build

Hi Gil, builted one about 15 years ago to replace my HW7 on holidays, the transmitter section is good but the receiver makes the HW7 sound like a Icom 7300!. Nice kit to built but not usable, it was deaf and had AM break through, I binned it and bought a TenTec 1320 and still use it on holidays to this day, I love your channel and check it every day, thanks Gil. 73 de gi0ggy.

The YT Algorithm has offered this 1 year-old video, how nice! I have the FOXX-3 since more than 5 years now and it was an interesting challenge to get a qso on it. And I've made it! The first was with the HB9 station some almost 2000 km away! The guy was surprised I was running 1W, so was I :). I have made some more contacts with it using my permanent full-size 80-10 EFHW antenna. The biggest drawback of this type of radios is not the 1W really, it's the non-variable crystal oscillator... It would be fun to come back to this project and improve it with adding one of these now largely available one-chip synthesisers. Might be a winter project! 72! Linas LY2H

Had a look at the schematic, it looks like FOXX3 uses the Pixie scheme where the transmitter PA doubles as the receiver mixer. Actually the design is originally from George GM3OXX in SPRAT 1983. Hence the only receive selectivity is provided by the LPF, so it is open from the crystal frequency to DC. Will be prone to AM broadcast interference. Surprised you don't hear more band noise, you may have heard more with a 40m kit. A novelty, not really useable, and the 1 watt is not enough to be fairly sure you'll make a contact. Still, a bit of fun! 73 Paul VK3HN

Hi,Good video.I have just built a 40 meter unit. Great fun but I too have low receive audio. It transmits 1 watt.I have found out that the LM386 op amp used in in the audio amplifier circuit comes in different amplification values. I was supplied with a low rated amplification version,( LM386L rated at 0.325W ).For instance amplification of the "N" range of LMs is as follows:- LM386N-1 =0.325 watts ,the -2 =0.7 watts and the -4 =1 watt.I will try a higher rated LM386 to try to boost my audio level.Hope it works.Dave

Gil, you might want to look into Diz's 5Watter kit. It's an update of his and K7QO's 1Watter kit - now sold out. It will have a VXO/VFO, keyer, and decent audo and sensitivity, etc. The footprint is somewhat larger than an Altoids box but can be housed in a small case. Check it out. Should be available in July 2019. Google Kits and Parts 5Watter. No pecuniary interest, just liked the 1Watter.

As always, an excellent video. Question; have you tried a high impedance amplifier for your sound? I use a modified telephone conference type amplifier or a small guitar amp for items like this or for listening to crystal radios, rather than a regular sound amplifier based on the LM386 chip for amplifying a radios sound output . The sound level is much improved.
