    Daniel provides a very comprehensive well thought out strategic picture that helps me to understand the system dynamics. He also allows me to see the level of difficulties in solving world, strategic contingencies and problems. He argues convincingly that simplistic solutions won’t work which I agree with. Therefore we need to be careful in coming up with knee jerk solutions to complex problems that might make things worse.

    Outstanding conversation.
    What Daniel’s project seeks to create is absolutely mandatory if we wish to take any path as a species other than directly into a catastrophic reign of autocracy and plutocracy.
    ... and it is EXACTLY the way to do it.
    I’ve been comparing what all the great minds in ALL areas have been saying for six years now, and I’m am dead certain that Daniel’s organization’s goal and what mechanisms they seek to create MUST all be created and MUST ALL exist at the same time. If this can be done, and they can each survive intact and functioning for just two years, then the human species has a good chance of reaching a real lasting enlightenment.
    Lord I pray they can do it. 🤘😃🤘

    I agree with nearly everything that Daniel says. However the one thing I don't buy is the 'the people who run Facebook aren't evil, and aren't trying to screw things up'. They ABSOLUTELY know what their product is doing. They've just brainwashed themselves to deny it, because it goes directly against their interests to acknowledge it. I'm not saying they intended what we have to day from the beginning, however they 100% know how it works now.

    • @TheDionysianFields
      @TheDionysianFields 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The algorithms aren't completely autonomous. Each social media platform has an underlying ideology that it seeks to preserve (if not advance). There's no neutrality left and content is monitored and filtered to some extent via various mechanisms. I believe this.

    • @TheDionysianFields

      They also know of the lasting psychological and sociological impacts of these platforms in their current context/formats and choose to do nothing about it.

      Like the poor tech minds in The Social Dilemma film 'appear' to be questioning what they've done while the film itself is telling us what they're doing...they're not innocent...they've taken the money having delivered the outcomes as requested.

    • @andybaldman
      @andybaldman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@misswithahiss Have you seen the 'response' PDF that Facebook released in response to the Social Dilemma? It's a joke. However I do think they are a cult-like entity now, that has brainwashed themselves into thinking they're 'enhancing the customer experience', when they're just doing evil shit for profit. Watch the Frontline doc from 2 years ago as well, as well as the 20+ hours of interviews with current and past FB employees. All of the current folks talk exactly like Zuck. They're cultists.

    A few thoughts. I am humbled by the innovative thinking and intelligence of these gentlemen, and as a student of history, I applaud them for their research. Looking around me, and having been trained in anthropology, and naturally inquisitive, my observations are that only an extremely small percentage of the US population is interested in becoming more widely educated. They are caught up in making a living and attempting to find superficial meaning in their lives. (I do not criticize). "Government" is a far off entity which doesn't generally interest most people other than the "left vs the right" narrative. Corruption is there because that's the way it has always been. Result is higher blood pressure and end of conversation. The task of "righting the ship" is beyond comprehension. I think the road is long, and will be punctuated with a second civil war, and although I do not look forward to it, the turmoil may propel the US into thoughtful introspection (and maybe get rid of some of our oligarchs along with it). Thank you gentlemen.

    1:03:32 I love the point Daniel makes here: Essentially: Sensemaking should contain the entire problemspace, not just one single problem, or else your solution to that problem will contain unaddressed externalities. You can get more people in on productive dialogue and problem solving if your initial sensemaking contains their concerns.
    So simple, yet I've never thought of it that way.

    • @DarkMoonDroid
      @DarkMoonDroid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is why "positivity" is making all these problems worse.

    • @bulletproofmofo
      @bulletproofmofo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. But who decides the parameters of the problemspace? We need systems that are capable of addressing issues that are far outside the scope of a single election cycle.

    • @DarkMoonDroid
      @DarkMoonDroid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another thing...
      What about the people who aren't having a problem? Like the wealthy sociopaths who are lovin' it. They won't be at the table and they look after their own concerns.

    • @bulletproofmofo
      @bulletproofmofo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DarkMoonDroid I've argued for years that market forces transcend governmental controls. In other words, you can bend things to your will in the short term, but in the end market forces will prevail every time. Likewise Schmachtenberger's cause transcends the will of a handful of self-deluded autocrats. We generally believe that money makes the world go around, but money is just one way we choose to measure things. Truly wealthy entities number in the thousands, and all they control are systems and dollars that are rapidly becoming more and more irrelevant. They will always be able to remain king or queen over their irrelevant empire. But the remaining 8 billion people will experience a continually expanding set of choices over where they can invest their time and resources, which laws, nationstate, taxes and such that they find most beneficial for themselves. My .02.

If you can tell this story in 19 minutes then I’ll be shocked but I will look forward even if its triple that! Right now we’re drowning in conflicting paradigms (Critical Theory vs Classical Liberalism) that, while important, make me think of two kids arguing about who has to clean up which side of their room while their house is burning down. Gonna have to write down these names to watch for more. Hats off to all three!

And that means we are capable of many things, and have limitations, but also have the abstraction capability to work around those limitations or take advantage of the limitations in others. I've been listening to Douglas Rushkoff's Team Human and a lot of these discussions cross over with what Rushkoff speaks about.

    The one thing I’ve noticed is I had a lot of democrat friends that will not talk to me because I’m a Conservative. We used to disagree on some things but we agreed on a lot. Now, we don’t talk at all. Not from my end, from theirs. I’m not on FB at all anymore because of my friends fighting. It just got crazy. How can we fix this? The Democrats as far as I can see have planned this for decades. It started in our schools and has moved on to everything. When I was in school, we had civics and economics in school. We had to do current events and bring it in the next day. They’ve taken all of this out of school, to make the children ignorant. My kids weren’t taught that way because I made sure they knew what was going on. What happens to the children of parents that are ignorant as well? Antifa!! Just something I felt like saying... lol

If you don't spout (and believe) the nonsense, people are marginalized, sworn at, shut up, shunned, etc. It's impossible to have a coherent conversation with anybody on the left because the people who control them have taught them that the "other" is a bad person. That's a violent attitude that is impossible to surmount.

    One sense-making forum that really felt satisfying to me was the United States jury system that I got to participate in one time/ Putting aside it's possible abuses what I had experienced was taking a situation in which a decision had to be made by 12 jurors presiding over by a judge with lawyers from either side presenting the case. As jurors you are not allowed to be influenced by newpapers and internet memes. You are not allowed to read or discuss the case with people outside the court room. One thing I have decided is that if I am going to get into a argument with my friends or family is to clearly state the case. Agree on vocabulary words. Everyone read and educate themselves with an agreed set of source materials. I feel like having discussions is so difficult with everyone throwing around trigger words. Maybe we need more satisfying sense making forums. Are there any sense-making sites or technologies that we could be using? I find intelligent conversation hijacking my lymbic system...

    Hey Guys,
    I just wanted to start by thanking you for such an incredible, enlightening conversation. I do have one suggestion- I know Tom is familiar with Rich Roll, as that is where I was first introduced to TNP. I think it would be really helpful to create some sort of "Show Notes" section, similar to what Rich has for his podcast, within youtube or even a link to a show notes webpage within TNP. This would be a space that could provide links to articles or other helpful information related to the people and ideas that are discussed within the show for those of us who would like to dig a little deeper. Thank you again, and forgive me if this was mentioned previously or exists somewhere already.

Capture periodic "Eureka" moments when someone finds out how information overlaps in non-obvious and unique ways of value/benefit? I have some ideas as to very useful design features.

    We need to stop teaching children winning is wrong . Stop giving the entire class a trophy. Capitalism works maybe, if we started to pay attention to the what and who was destroying our education system 40 years ago we would have been better prepared for this shift to technology . I wonder if it isn't crucial for us to balance short attention span with complex intellectual constructs. If I don't learn something or get exposed to a challenging perspective within minutes of reading or watching, I want to go elsewhere. Do we need a form of communication where we can put out stand-alone building blocks that can become or lead to a fuller understanding of the subjects that, at first glace, appear too big to fathom? Object oriented programming comes to mind. I don't mind devoting a lot of time to understanding a concept...but, I need inducements/rewards along the way to keep me on track.

    At approx. 1 hr, 20 minutes Dan offers a media literacy solution. I offer this as Exhibit A in my (admittedly, illiterate) sense of a possible concern that shakes my confidence in sense-making as a private sector, for-profit thing. Using media literacy as the example, I don't understand how legislation/current law (for this example: The Smith-Mundt Modernization Act), and real-world cost/time analysis for the repeal/ softening/sun-setting of a particular law that, if softened or repealed, would fundamentally change any sense-making approach. In this example, basically repeal the legalization of propaganda against the citizenry (the use of which grows faster than the national debt), and with a tiny bit of political will, make sure employment of propaganda get's a broadcaster's license pulled. Now you've created a vastly different, perhaps less formidable foundational challenge. Maybe even having broadcast licensees become partners in your Media Literacy Project (make-em an offer they can't refuse) . And if this is already a separate sense-making thing or department, please excuse my ignorance. I don't know. I'm wildly above my pay grade, but I understand declasse'. It may go against any sense-making mission statement. But altruism and and public support in your sense-making seem to be positions few commercial enterprises hold. Seems like the first thing to look at:effect of government composition, the law, regulations, tax consequences, possible cascades within a political climate, cost. Or I guess you could employ lobbying shops. But as a normie, I'd trust your sense-making crew more than any lobbying firm. Unless, of course, the lobbying folks would do pro-bono for the self-congratulating good will generated....

    If a smart watch had a charged capacitor in it, that based on data curated on something you cared about woke you up with a varying degree of electric shock depending on how good/bad the data was in the last 24 hours and the screen reminded you of some predetermined actions you would like to work on based on the issue you cared about? AI life coaching? Personal counter AI curation of social media feeds based on who you want your future self to be? An interesting war indeed!
