Love watching your vids! When you wrap your fig trees, could you record and upload it please?
I planted a Hardy Chicago in the spring of 2018 that died back in the winter. It only grew to a couple feet tall. This year it has come back and grown to about 3 - 4 feet. I am currently just letting it grow as a bush instead of a tree. A friend near me let his grow as a bush and it was loaded almost every year. He never wrapped it, just cut it back some years.
I have eaten 1 tiny fig this year from my small bush, which was delicious, but it has lots more that probably won't ripen before it gets cold. I have plenty of wood chips that I was going to pile around the trees this year, but that might not be enough.
I planted 2 more this spring and they haven't grown much at all. This hasn't been the best year for growing anything in SW VA. All three of my fig plants were from Lowes and were a mere stick in a bag when I got them. I am in VA, zone 7a, but because of the altitude where I am, it can get close to 6b sometimes. I think I too am going to have no choice but to wrap them. Just looking to learn more from an experienced grower.
Your love for figs is contagious and has gotten me excited about getting a bunch of them growing now that I have the space to do it. I can't eat or preserve but so many apples, peaches, pears and cherries, but I think I could make a meal on figs about every day. Now I am looking online for suppliers to get several more varieties you have recommended to plant next year. Also, saw your persimmon video and had already planned on getting a couple of Nikita's Gift and Saijo trees. You reaffirmed my choices for me.
    Thanks!

Thank you for your kind words! I'm very glad that you have enjoyed my videos and that they have helped to encourage more enthusiasm in your growing hobby. I will be making several videos on how to properly wrap fig trees for Winter protection. After my trees go dormant, I will begin to prepare them for their Winter sleep. Take care! Lou monti

Hi, Ana! Pruning fig trees, as with other fruiting trees, is a vast subject. However, too answer your question as best I can from my personal experience, trimming your fig tree, providing that it's not excessive, can generally be safely done any time of the year. The best time would be during Winter dormancy. Take care, and wishing you a fantastic 2020 growing season! Lou Monti

When my brother moved to Florida I gave him a small Peter's Honey as a going away gift. It was 15 years ago when he moved to Cape Coral and the tree has thrived and produced fruit every year since. Based on his success, I don't think that you could go wrong with Peter's Honey. Good luck!
