Arlene: I'm detecting something adorable in that voice! Steve: I'll see you later! Steve's huge wit and personality were all over this segment. He was one of my heroes from the time I was a kid. I always liked writers and comedians, and Steve Allen was outstanding with both talents.
Steve Allen was easily one of the sharpest minds in that business and equally as genuine and nice and classy. There were/are some others. Mel Brooks comes to mind.
one of the wittiest and funny, quick wits ever---he also wrote over 4,000 songs, the biggest being THIS COULD BE THE START OF SOMETHING BIG--a good jazz piano player also----but i enjoyed his improvisational humor when he put a camera on the street in the back of the studio in california--check out his funny and quick comments as he played piano in the background--a genius of a talent to me
This clip is, by far, one of the funnest WML moments I've seen. I think that the one with Irene Dunne is fabulous, but this is hysterical! I never appreciated Steve Allen's talent until I discovered him on the TH-cam clips of WML. He had a razor sharp wit and seemed to a genuinely nice man.
I recently came on to theses they're brilliant . I knew of Steve Allen from the Benny Goodman story I didn't realise how funny he really was and such a pioneer in the early days
The originator of the tonight show. Comedian, pianist, author of dozens of books, wrote thousands of songs. Also a fine actor "The Benny Goodman Story". A talent we will never see again. Makes what we have now and the past several years look like garbage. Which, by the way, is what we have.
Even when I just a tiny little kid I thought he was the smartest funniest man on TV. I loved his comedy more than the slapstick vaudeville kind that was usually shown. There are men as quick witted today but none with so much grace and dignity.
So witty ("it wasn't named BEFORE me!!"), so charming (Arlene's reference to his red-headed wife), so erudite (all of them), and in the end, so supportive and modest that Misses Francis and Kilgallen even plug his new book!! I miss this show.
Allen appeared 5? times as mystery guest and as contestant (1966) when he owned a motorcycle shop. I love this one best. GSN showed this 1958 episode in December 2008. It featured a cute young female who demonstrated mattresses in a department store; Bennett solved it almost singlehandedly. the head of the Women's Army of Israel. a male ballet dancer built like an accountant Dorothy plays seriously! and to win: when she gets lost ( 2:062:59 ) it is doubly funny. Thanx Kirba.
AND GOD SAID, "LET THERE BE LAUGHTER", AND HE CREATED STEVE KELLOGG. "NOT ON THIS SIDE OF THE STAGE". EVERY REPLY WAS AN ABSOLUTE GEM. WATCHING HIM, TEARS ARE FALLING BECAUSE I LOVED HIM SO AND MISS HIM MUCHO.
Writer, musician, comedian -- the talent of Steve Allen was on a monumental scale. Funny!! Who can compare with him today? Poor Dorothy Kilgallen seems to be lost in space in this clip, but she is still amusing, and at least she has a sense of humor about being lost. Is their a dummy? Not on this side of the stage. LOL
I suspect anyone who had heard Steve Allen yell "Schmock!" or laugh would have recognized the voice in a milisecond. That would certainly have been everybody there. Sometimes I think some on the panel, or in this case probably everybody, know right away and just play for awhile for the entertainment value.
Now you have to have noticed that John is always so enamored of his own voice and promoting friends of his who may have written a book or some such that he had no memory of his duty to promote Steve's book until Arlene, who is always on top of things, mentioned it.
@@lagrangepoint9386 True, sort of. That one is a little iffy. For example, you will see "Get him! It's him!". And not "Get him! It's he!". Neither is actually wrong. The difference is between formal and informal. Written would lean toward formal and spoken toward informal. The English language is quite a mess. For example, the contraction for "I am" is annoying to me. Why can't I say, "He is not as tall as I'm". Or what if I say, "I don't care how old I'm, I still like toys." (I know there are some rules - of sorts.)
Simply put... Steve Allen was one of the funniest human beings to ever walk the Earth.
And apparently, from what I could see, a very nice guy as well.
"Are you bigger than a breadbox?" Love it! 😆
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE STEVE ALLEN. !!!!!!
I loved that John Daly said "Welcome home," still referring to Mr. Allen as a member of the panel family. A 10-ton comedy talent.
Arlene: I'm detecting something adorable in that voice!
Steve: I'll see you later!

“The situation is we could use more comedy.”
😂❤
"Is it a situation comedy ?"
" the situation is it needs more comedy !"
priceless
I always enjoyed Steve Allen while growing up - a master wit if ever there was one.
Steve Allen may be able to disguise his voice but not his wit. He can't help it. lol He was a very funny character. :)
"It wasn't named before me." made me fall off the chair.
Was one of the most intelligent men ever on the tube....
Me too!
Steve Allen was the best!! ❤❤
Me too!😂❤

What a lovely humble guy Steve Allen. 😊

Many of us had the same experience.

Steve Allen could always make me laugh.😅 Intelligent & quick witted. Generous spirit. Many talents.
He is one of the greats of all entertainers...
Hilarious! And a multi-talented legend.
Ms Francis is the best ! Always complimenting and promoting the guests.
More than likely one of the most all around talents that was ever on TV.He could do it all!!!
Mr. Allen should have gotten an award for impersonating a comedian.
I loved how john daly allowed steve to improvise
Dorothy may play seriously, but in all, she knew how to have fun! lol
He had the quick Irish wit. I have the Irish wit, but it's nowhere near as quick as his was! I loved Steve Allen!
Steve Allen was so clever and so adorable . ❤
Love Ralph Bellamy's "oh wow" groan when he realizes who it was.
Steve Allen, my hero.
My father loved him. I am learning why.
Me too, big influence.
Mine too! From the time I was less than 5 years old.
Ralph Bellamy had been so brilliant as FDR that it's a joy here to see him as a regular guy.
These people are admirable

Steve Allen was a tremendus tallent, and very highly respected in the business.
He definitely should have been a stand in for Walt Disney to voice Mickey Mouse 😂
"SMOCK, SMOCK !!!"
Hi-ho Steverino! Brilliant ...

Not on this side of the stage. LOL
I love Steve Allen. Never seen him before WML!
“Not before me.” 😂😂
He sounds like Mickey Mouse!
Maybe, but if Jayne Meadows knew about it, it wouldn't be so cute.
That was hilarious when Fred Burg was the guest. Threw Steve right off.☺
Super talented guy.
At 3:52 you can hear Ralph Bellamy moan "Oh no!"
Thanks very much.
SMOCK! SMOCK!
wow, that guy was funny
Funny, funny man.

He was the best
I want some gloves to wear just like Miss Arlene's lol
Dorothy still has Batgirl's bra on her eyes!
Always the bread box
Funniest mystery guest ever
You forgot song writer and musician.
Nice.
May 18,1958
Arlene is the best to be honest miss her so much
These shows had some serious product placement.
Very!

I think they knew immediately that it was he. I think they were being good sports. NO, it's not HIM; it's HE. Nominative case.
He's known for that voice. Too easy.
Nominative case should not be used in this structure.

No volume. Good job. Not.
Steve was never funny.
