Railfanning Richmond, TX 8/9/14

After getting the ZLAJX at Rosenberg, I moved to Richmond to see what I'll get.
Train 1: UP 5940 QEWWC-09 w/ a beautiful K3LA

Train 2: UP 9644 light powers west w/ a sweet K3LA doppler effect

Train 3: Whoa, that's quite rare! I have never seen a UP coal train running on the Glidden Sub before! A westbound Union Pacific coal drag led by trio of elephant style GE's with a nice K5HLL blast west through the town.

Train 4: Right after the UP coal train passed, my Sony was draining halfway low on battery, so I was charging my camera at my dad's car on the north side of the track when suddenly I was caught right off guard by another westbounder. I had to frantically unplug my camera off the charger and run my tripod to the closest possible spot I could find of zero obstruction since I didn't have enough time to get to the best spot since the train was approaching. It turned out to be an SD70M leading a WB UP manifest with a nice ACe sounding horn.

Train 5: My last catch of the day. A KCS manifest/intermodal with a great K5HLL highballs east through the town. This is also my second time to catch both 4784 and 4623.

I've seen 3 Coal Trains on the UP Navasota Sub. Interesting you caught one on the glidden sub. And nice SD70M with a K5LLA!

Great catches with the UP Units and the KCS units! One of the best parts was the power move. Neat horns too! You got some good stuff!

I'm thinking that the UP 9644 (Light power) was the LHT43, and he didn't have any cars to bring to Eagle Lake. However, they'll still run the power out there in order to have power to bring cars back on the LHT44.
As for that coal train, that's a pretty neat catch! I have no clue as to why it was going through Richmond, though. Detour, maybe?

Thanks! And wow, interesting! I was surprised to see a UP coal train running through Rich/Rose, though it was a pretty cool catch! When I saw UP 7476 rounding the bend near the Brazos River trestle, I was expecting it to be a rock train at first until it came closer. Yeah, it might be either a detour, or maybe movement of empty coal cars from Houston to somewhere west where they needed them? Who knows.
