To understand how to build a wall with raw earth, and more particularly a rammed earth wall, it is essential to learn how to build a good sand pile! First, a cup is filled with wet sand in one go and then packed by hand. The resulting pile cannot withstand a load of 1,500 grams. In a second step, the cup is filled little by little, compacting thin layers of sand, one after the other. The resulting pile can then bear a weight of 3 kilograms.
The trick to making a sand pile that can withstand a heavy load is to compact thin layers of sand: the resulting pile is six times stronger than a normal sand pile. This is exactly the logic of the rammed earth technique: the thinner the layers of earth that are compacted, the more compact and resistant the material.
