The ends of a finite series are literally never BETWEEN them. The length of a finite set that are BETWEEN the first and last element is the length of the set minus 2. Therefore, when asked to choose an integer between 1 and 10, the choices of 1 and 10 are invalid.
Western preoccupations aside, numbers like 7, 13, 17, etc are definitely fun numbers to play with. That said, hypersensitivity of systems is very much a control issue. To wit; predictability is improved with the application of controls to exclude specific influences on the process being observed - which is how we not only learn about the things we are trying to observe but also about the things which influence the behaviour of what we observe.
