    Ok, so what about Carson's variegated nomism? When I think about how many other 1st century jewish sources Dunn, Sanders and Wright missed, it makes my heart warm 😊

    Doing some research on NPP and found this to be great. Thanks. My focus tended toward Paul and his thinking more than the view of Judaism being put forth. I should know better but got caught up in the name which should be New Views of Paul's view of second century Judaism but NVPVSCJ dosen't sound as nice as NPP. Way to go Jimmy Dunn.

    Having just read Wright's book on new perspective Wright's theology goes salvation is by grace it's a gift. You are then proclaimed rightous by God(justified) you will then be pronounced justified again at the last judgement and judged on the life lived. Before the throne of Christ. Justification is not salvation. It's rightousness. Torah for the Jews is what they believed brought them justification. No its in Christ and you show your justification in the life lived. This is Wrights argument.

    Graham Twelftree studied under Jimmy Dunn too. I'd like McKnight to comment on his view of the gospels.

    From 5:19 "Fundamentally then, the protestant reformed tradition believes that human beings are trying to perform and be accepted with God. They get that view from what Paul says 'by the works of the law' which is now run through a view of Judaism, that Judaism was a merit seeking righteousness. When you say Judaism was not that, 'works of the law' changes its meaning."
    Paul: "Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness." (Romans 10:1-3)

      "But their zeal [for God] is not based on knowledge."" When Adam knew his wife Eve, she conceived. Same thing happened when Cain knew his wife. Knowledge & knew are the same word in different forms. It's Seed+Earth=Fruit. In spiritual context, it's Christ Spirit + Human Soul = Fruits of the Spirit. Jesus Christ truly is ALL & IN ALL. He's the Seed of the Woman Mary, the Root of Judah, the Light, the Water, the Tree of Life AND the Fruit of the Spirit. That's why He said to eat His Flesh & Drink His Blood. He Sowed the SEED of Eternal Life which was in His Blood & His DNA. The truly Good News is that we were given access to Tree of [Eternal] Life which had been forbidden bc of Adam & Eve's enmity with God. Repentance is a broken heart (circumcized) which is the soft & yielding SOUL/SOIL to receive The SEED of Life. Faith would seem to be the Fertilizer which continually feeds the SOIL. We are what we eat, as they say. This is how to be led by the Spirit, to be Born Again, to be reGENErated, to truly KNOW God. Seed to Harvest. It's the Perfect Parable. Even a child could understand. Glory to God's perfect plan for our salvation.

      @@Habackuk24 Inductive & deductive logic are under rated. True knowledge of God results in Fruits of the Spirit. Against these there is NO LAW. Divine Love is the Highest Law. Nobody wants to be double yoked under OT & NT Commandments. That's not Joy. That's not an easy yoke & a light burden. And that's not Good News. That's very Bad News. Test all Spirits, esp with any theological system. If it's 2+2=5, go back to the parable of Seed to Harvest. God bless all my brothers & sisters on this Quest for the Truth. Jesus is the Truth & the Way to Eternal Life ❤🐑🌱

      I was thinking the same, it's interesting to notice that all these "new perspectives" or "new interpretations" come up with history and truths that somehow were missed for more than 1800 years.. :/

    Is this it then?
    "works" according to the "old perspective" = "merits in the treasury of merits"
    "works" according to the "New Perspective"= "performing the duties"

    • @RyGuyDCL
      @RyGuyDCL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think so. The New Perspective on Judaism is that Jews did not think of themselves as saved because of 'performed duties'. They thought of themselves as saved for 2 reasons: Because God had chosen them and what God provided via Yom Kippur meant they didn't need to worry about sin.

    I'm in agreement. Paul fought against the teaching of the judaizers who sought justification thhrough works (meritocracy). I like his point of double imputation that leads to faith in Christ. Pistis Christo.

    Is the Protestant reformation perspective on Paul not a new perspective in itself historically? The first systematic commentary on Roman’s is that by Origen, then from John chrysostom - native greek, latin ambrosiaster,…

    Jesus said
    "Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope" Those Jesus was speaking to set their hope on the law, their obeidience to it. This is who Paul was speaking to. (Old perspective)

  • @taylorbarrett384

    Except it's a wrong perspective on Judaism. It assumes the best and denies the worst. Yet we know Jews often thought God chose them because they were righteous rather than the other way around (Cf. Deut 9:4). And Jesus gives us a perfect example of the contrast between justification by earning/achieving and receiving/believing. See the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. The one who pays lip service to grace but trusts his own pious deeds, vs. the sinner who merely trusts mercy. Only the latter goes home "justified." Plus, Paul plainly attacks the view righteousness is like a wage we earn. "To the one who works his wage is not a gift but what is owed." I could go on. But

    there is no new perspective, it is the old misunderstood perspective, simply because humans finally came to understand what Jesus died for and what Paul was saying, does not make it 'new', it just took us that long to 'get it' - you don't pave a path to heaven through good works, you do it through faith which transforms you such that you do the work that Jesus would, it's about becoming a different type of person, the kind of person who does good works,

    • @wakeywakey8603
      @wakeywakey8603 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So putting the cart before the horse = doing works to gain salvation = backwards.
      However, putting the horse before the cart = doing good works bc the Spirit of Christ dwells within you = Servant of God rather than Slave to Sin.
      Why did Jesus say His YOKE was easy & His burden was light? Yoke indicates WORK. His Righteousness operating within me changes my desires & motivations. We are of one accord & I do as The Lord leads me. I wonder if many Christians are underestimating The Holy Spirit part of the equation? Which is missing the whole point of the New Covenant. The only way it works is by yielding to The Spirit of God Tabernacling in my Soul.
