    McMana called? What the hell? That guy, is a closed window actually. It makes perfect sense. Oh and hey, no problem guy's. Glad you're enjoying it.

    So awesome to see that fan finally in use! I remember watching EC's original video on it back in 2008.

      +Sharkie626 Yup! We started talking about a WHF after I videoed the one in my work house, and EC said "hey, I got one for ya!"

    We had a Ward’s belt driven one from 1965. It was installed in an abandoned house. The belt ended up snapping and the fan ended up going down with the house

    Your project is amazing! I love this. =)
    It's not only you can get a fresh air but also to clear the smoke, dust, etc to have a clean air. =)

    Welcome to the club. There is a 36" belt drive circa 1980 Sears whole house fan installed in the attic wall here. Perfect for keeping the whole house cool on dry fall nights. One thing you do need to be careful of is your gas hot water heater. The whole house fan has enough suction to create a down draft from the chimney and blow out the pilot light!

    • @HarleyBadger
      @HarleyBadger 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NJRoadfan That thought has occurred to me, mostly due to my inexperience with gas appliances, and so far as long as we have 3-4 windows open, it's not downdrafting.

    • @r1ckastl3y86
      @r1ckastl3y86 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It happens to me a lot because the pipe leading to the outside fell down into the attic so whenever I use my 30 inch whole house fan I have, it blows out the pilot light.

    Nice fan, I wish we had these in Germany but with all the energy efficiency bullshit it is a wonder you have enough air to breathe in a new construction. Luckily my house is late 70s vintage to no airtightness for me. Please make sure you have no negative draft on any chimneys/fireplaces/gas furnace !

    • @HarleyBadger
      @HarleyBadger 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +eaglevision993 Yeah, they would work great there because of your mild climate. And yep, we checked thoroughly, the only outside pipe is for the water heater, and it doesn't downdraft as long as we have a couple windows open. The furnace is sealed, so no worries there.

  • @Waltzkon
    @Waltzkon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very impressive setup you got there. It looks really well done and seems to work amazingly. Makes me want to move to somewhere I can do that. Trying this where I am now, with typically 70-85+ humidity... no.

    • @HarleyBadger
      @HarleyBadger 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Waltzkon Thanks, and yep.. if we tried to use this in that kind of humidity, the carpets and furniture would get damp.

  • @jaykay18

    Just got a chance to watch this now, wanted to watch it sooner. Great video, very well put together. Love all the controls, just everything is perfect. One thing I didn't see you show (although I may have missed it), what if the fan is off and you start it on low, will the louvers open?
    A great outtake would have been at the end part--having somebody in the attic, fan off. Strings attached to the louvers, you dub in the sound of the fan starting up, and Spats' head comes off (with the strings) and is "sucked up" against the open louvers, just to show how powerful it really is. That would have been really funny. "Gotta hang on to your hat around here, or in this case, your head!"

    • @HarleyBadger
      @HarleyBadger 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +jaykay18 Yep, Spats adjusted the speed control's "fine tuning" so that it will open the louvers even starting on the lowest speed setting. Especially important in case we have the fan on low and have a power outage, we wouldn't want it turning slowly with no airflow across the motor. Even though the motor has its own internal fan, it can't be good for it to get stuffy. And OMG yes, that would have been great! You have a lot of better ideas than I do LOL...

    would an air exchanger do the samething?

    • @HarleyBadger
      @HarleyBadger 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +randomrazr Nerp. An air exchanger's purpose is simply to keep a neutral pressure (also oxygen from depleting and CO2 from building) in a modern structure that is SO airtight you gotta cut a hole in it. An example similar to the Energy Star horseshit... Build an energy-efficient home and then cut a hole in it because it's so airtight that bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans can't pull any make-up air. Air exchangers also have only a tiny amount of airflow, and they're usually designed to warm or cool the air from outside to minimize heat loss.

    How much power does the fan use compared to central A/C, and what can it do for cooling?
    Also, what's the McStory about McMana?

    • @HarleyBadger
      @HarleyBadger 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bearambles Oh, I'm sorry, we didn't get a chance to reply to you until now. The fan uses a maximum of 4 amps at 120 vac, compared to our central A/C's 30 amps at 240 vac. So, apples to apples, at comparable voltage, the fan uses only about 7% of the power of the A/C. If the outside temperature is lower than the inside temperature, this fan can bring the house temperature down to that of the outside in about 3 minutes.
      McMana is a former coworker of Spatsbear, he lives in a McMansion, and thinks (and constantly says) that he is better than us. Although he makes less money, has less quality of life, and has marital problems that Spatsbear and I do not. There will be an upcoming video that will explain McMana to his fullest.

    • @seana806
      @seana806 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HarleyBadger I think a video explaining who McMana is would be a great idea. First time I heard of McMana was in a video Updates & Rants (I think that’s what the title of the video was) in October or November of 2014. Second time I heard of McMana was in the video where you guys were essentially trolling the McMansion neighborhood somewhere near Cranberry Township. Yeah, those people (McMansioners) just say they are better than everyone else just to satisfy their own little egos when in reality their lives are a complete disaster but try to make themselves sound perfect on the surface. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if those McMansioners were deep in debt since they have to put everything on credit or on a loan just to show off their latest and greatest toys and such.

    By chance, what causes the shutters to open/close when the fan is turned on/off? Is it simply the suction of the fan blade that pulls the shutters open?

    • @HarleyBadger
      @HarleyBadger 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John McDevitt The airflow pulls them open, and lack of airflow causes them to close via gravity.

    • @vanni9283
