I love the fantasy blue ones best. After losing two batches of regular cherries to bad molts, I finally have a stable colony and I agree it’s super fascinating to watch them go about their lives. The hobby is super fun and the shrimp are super low maintenance once things stabilize and you have a routine going.
Hello, and thank you so much for this video, I'm just getting interested in shrimp for the aquarium. I'm having some flown in and have been binge watching TH-cam vids on the subject. I really appreciate your presentation style as well as very articulate presentation. Thumbs up!
Awesome video, great narration. I am a second generation aquarium keeper, 20 years ago I first saw "glass" shrimp at aquarium/fish stores. And now these amazing species keep showing up. Yesterday I happened upon blue, red, and some sort of gold shrimp. I bought one of each. They have joined my Amono shrimp who is two years old. I would like to shay photos some day.
For those curious, the competition shrimp clip varieties are (in order): -24K or "goldenback" yellow shrimp, Neocaridina -Neon Yellow shrimp, Neocaridina -Orange Rili shrimp, Neocaridina -Galaxy Fishbone Pinto, Caridina -Orange Eyed Blue Tiger, Caridina CPK's shrimp are a mix of fire red cherries, blue velvets and sunkist/pumpkin/oranges. All of these fantastic colors are of the Neocaridina variety, meaning they are easier to care for and a great introduction to the world of shrimp keeping! Happy shrimping guys!

Great video! I agree that shrimp are like little cat-bugs. They're so delightful to watch. I have a 20 gallon set up and my red cherries are LOVING it. Started out with 5 shrimp 7 months ago... now I have at least 200! They're so gentle too. Endlessly entertaining to watch, definitely one of my favorite types of animal I've kept.
Such a GREAT video! I always love your videos! Thank you so much for the close-ups - they really peak my interest in owning more than just my ghost shrimp. :)
I'm glad you liked it! I used to own ghost shrimp in the past and they were quite the escape artists. I would sometimes find them dried up in different rooms of the house O_O Luckily Neocaridina seem to like to stay in the tank :P
I've never kept Neocaridina, but I really wanted to get some Taiwan bees. Even though most don't suggest it, I went straight to Caridina. My bees are doing great! I keep them in a 5 gallon planted tank with green babaulti shrimp and Thai micro crabs. As long as you do your homework (I know you will of course) you will do great with them especially because you have success with the Neos.
4:50 - When the female molts she becomes flexible enough to go into the mating position, but she's only this flexible for a few hours. This is why if you'll notice a molted shell you'll often find one of the shrimps now has eggs. Anyways they like to hide when they molt, so typically they'll hide right after the molt to stay safe until their shell hardens, so often the mating is done in a pretty hidden place. The females give off some kind of signal when they've molted to let the males know they can breed. If there's no male to breed with then the eggs don't descend from their body, you'll often see a female with a light triangle color at the base of the carapace, the next time she molts if there's a male available and the conditions are good enough in the tank then they'll breed. I've heard people talk about difficulties breeding shrimp, but this is crazy to me, I can't stop mine from breeding lol... I just keep a heavily planted tank with a light that turns on and off on a timer to simulate daylight, this seems to be sufficient enough to keep them happy and breeding. I've heard low (or even zero) ammonia, nitrates and nitrites are important for breeding, but the plants in my tank scrub all the nitrites out of my water that can be detected with a test, so I guess really if you want to ensure good shrimp breeding a lot of plants is the way to go. Loved the video by the way, great footage... I never thought I'd love little shrimp so much but they're adorable and amusing to watch lol.
Thanks for the info! I feel like I'm that much closer to understanding the little guys. I wonder if I would add clear tubes in the tank could I trick the shrimp into hiding inside when molting. Then I would be able to see spawning possibly..
I've been keeping grass shrimp , the same little freshwater shrimp people fished with, and we could catch them in almost every body of water , since the 60's , ( lol giving away my age) They are really great in a 29 gallon aquarium , with a couple fancy guppies and plenty of plants and moss . The grass shrimp are clear, but every once in a while you would get a funny one pop out , either darker or orangey, or yellow looking . The wild caught seem to be pretty hearty.
Alan: Well done! I share your enthusiasm for freshwater shrimp! I think they developed their cleaning skills when they evolved in marine waters where there are many small animals and plants that grow of the shrimp exoskeletons. In freshwater there are fewer of these hitchhikers but the shrimp skills can deal with them!
I've always been a fan of Ghost Shrimp. They're several times larger than the dwarf shrimp you cover in this video, and have really long legs (including the grabby claws). Oh, and they're named ghost shrimp because they're SUPER transparent for most of their lifespan; it can be a challenge to actually find them in your tank, because you could be looking straight through one and not realize it. But if you get in close, you can see all their little shrimp organs going to work inside of them, it's so cool.
I had 3 a long time ago and I had no clue they could escape so I found them in the other room dried up...they went on quite a dangerous walk. Id like to try them again..but I need a lid for the tank they live in
I used to have planted tanks with anubias, java fern and java moss on wood etc, community tanks, and ghost shrimp were my favorite. Not sure the real name, but they got pretty big sometimes small shrimp wise. I did see babies under their tails sometimes, but never anything beyond that. Great video! Wonderful narration!
CREEPY CLAWS WOW😍 that title was amazing seen some cool shrimp footage tonight thanks and keep the good work on especially your voice is amazing i can watch your videos again and again.
Great video. It was intresting and funny. I'm also new to shrimp and has blue neocaridina. Just a heads up that they told me at my local fishstore. If you have diffrent coulour on your shrimps, green and red and blue for example, the colours may take eachother out and the offspring may be transparent. There are great colourcharts om shrimps how show what colours that belongs to the same group. For example blue shrimp comes from Brown Wild shrimps that carries the blue gene.
Great video. I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but the little blue guy @ 2:25 might have Scutariella japonica. You see the little white wriggly things on its rostrum. I'm sure Rob @ Flip will help you out with that.
Rob actually helped me with it! He noticed it a few weeks ago on an instagram photo Daniel posted of the shrimp. We did salt dips as well as used paragard. Thank you for pointing it out. I appreciate it ❤
I recently started keeping neocaridina as well and this video was awesome! I ran to my tank and never realized some of the things you mentioned! Also loved the diagram lmao
i started getting interested in shrimps around 10 weeks ago which resulted in me taking out my old empty 60 liter tank and made it completely ready for neocaridinas after 4 weeks i added my first 10 blue dreams.. but i have alot of plants and stones/ hiding spaces so i really didnt see them alot. XD so last week i bought 10 more blue dreams i just love them. and they are so active. they even sit on top of my floating plants to eat from them XD
Hi Kasia - I also keep and breed Blue Dreams from Flip Aquatics. Rob posted a video (curtesy of another shrimp keeper) of a baby Blue Bolt (I believe) being born from a close-up view. Amazing! He posted it in 4/17/17 and it was called Pregnant Shrimp Giving Birth- Egg Hatching!
Thanks! I'm trying to be more positive and go back to the roots of why I make these videos in the first place, to share my excitement as I learn and explore keeping different critters. I'm glad that is it so far translating through my videos :D
OMG Kasia!!! This video is so fabulous!!! SO FABULOUS!!! I love it! Graby graby claws! I have been wanting to get shrimp for quite a while now, but I don't want to kill them, and what with the accidental snail rancher thing, I'm not sure I would be able to give them the time and effort that they clearly deserve. It will happen one day. I would really love to see my betta react to some shrimp! He is so perplexed by the mystery snails!!! So entertaining!!! 😀
Oh my goodness I have never seen a blue shrimp in my life never seen a red one either an orange one yellow one ever seen is clear you can see right through him wow this is amazing
The ones where you weren't sure (the orange/white creamsicle ones) were Orange Rili Neocaridina. The next one was indeed Caridina (Pinto, I think?). The Caridina do indeed require more specific water parameters (soft, acidic) and aren't as flexible as Neos.
Wow...so the orange/transparent ones are Neocaridina.. how cool! I keep thinking that Neos are the ones with only solid colors. I am entering a whole new world of shrimp and it is so exciting!
Creative Pet Keeping yup!! The neos with clear portions are what they “Rili” and you can get blue, red, orange or yellow Rilis. It’s just a color morph so those orange rilis are just orange neos that have been selectively bred to have that clear portion.
I'm going to look them up! They sound really cool. Daniel is really interested in shrimp breeding so I am considering making some room in the fishroom for a few 10 gallons (maybe 4) so he can keep a few varieties. Sharing is caring right?
@@CreativePetKeeping I have a few red rili that developed a neon blue body instead a white body. I should separate them and continue breeding this strain but I haven't.
I have dozens of them, always busy picking food off plants and rocks. Wish they were 2 inch long so I can seen their beauty. I have Ghost (clear bodied), Cherry and Blue shrimps. adorable little creatures. What camera did you use for this close-up?
Thanks! A long time ago I was testing out different dividers and I got this one on ebay. Now I use it as a lid :P I found something a bit similar on Amazon although it might be a bit big: amzn.to/2Ejs7Xy
This was such an adorable video on shrimp. I enjoyed it a lot. I didn't know you had shrimp. I've been keeping them for a few yrs now. The fanning of eggs is giving them oxygen. Love your word, grabby grabby claws. Hehehe. Black tigers are my favorite with blue shrimp following behind even though I have cherry, red rili, and red tigers. You can usually tell when breeding is in action when you see the males swimming in the tank from one area to another searching for a female. They look frantic! The actual act is extremely fast. When the female is ready to give birth she will kick them out. The babies look like a smaller version of an adult but colorless. The babies will hide until they feel comfortable to explore. I haven't figured how long that'll take though a few days or week (2), idk! I've seen them out and about in my tank maybe about 1/8 inch. I still get excited to this day.
I've only made two videos about the shrimp so far and those were easy to miss which might be why everyone is so surprised that I have shrimp haha. I always thought that when they were acting frantic, for what looked like no reason at all, when they were hungry. Now I am going to pay extra close attention. Shrimp are so much fun!
@@CreativePetKeeping Shrimp are a lot of fun! I've been getting more into scaping tanks too with different plants. I just recently purchased a betta. It's been four yrs or so since having my last betta. I've been enjoying seeing your betta video's. Btw, I've tried my shrimp water changes like you too with the small tubing and drip acclimate it while filling the tank back up with fresh water over a couple hr period time but I have such a hard time to get the water even started. Can you share your secret/method. 1) Maybe, my bucket of clean water isn't as high as yours??
I know the shrimps molt and when its a female molting she releases a scent that signals that she is ready to breed, tho most times the female as well mal shrimps will hide after molting til their new shells harden but also in the area the shrimps hide in is where they mate and when the baby shrimps are born they are generally over the tank so I hope you got some bee pollen shrimp food for babies, I gotten mine off Amazon and it works great to feed the shrimps ( both adults and babies) my fave color of Neo shrimps are Orange, Dark Blue, Bloody Marries and Snowball shrimps, for Crystal shrimps and there are not many but found them in a video from Flip Aquatics is the Santa Clause shrimps ( not sure if they are done with quarantine and avail for sale yet)
beautiful shrimp people. this was so therapeutic, after yesterday when i was with my family, and they traumatised me... they went to a restaurant and bought shrimp corpses. i was so sad looking into their eyes, hoping they would move and try to escape....thank you for this..!
Such a fun video with great shrimp clips and amusing anatomy vocabulary. :) I have an 18 gallon tank with cherry shrimp of various hue intensities and a couple of amanos and orange rili shrimp along with ember tetras and kubotai rasboras. The female shrimp do indeed seem to disappear with their eggs, down into the dense Süßwassertang, and then I eventually see baby shrimp emerge with their baby grabby claws.
That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw one of my shrimp doing the curved grooming: shrimp yoga! :) Best new (COVID-)hobby: pet shrimp! :)
I have 3 amano shrimp in a 29 gallon community tank. They are really cool to watch when they come out. I really want to setup my old 5 gallon tank as a shrimp tank at some point.
I feel like the tank's empty space needs something. A betta, green neon tetras, sparkling gourami, etc.? Absolutely adore how you call them "grabby grabby hands".
Out of curiosity, a lot of the nano shrimp are really cool looking. Are any of them capable of producing hybrids? Like are the blue and red ones able to reproduce with each other?
Great video! My father-in-law has a bunch of red neocaridina, and I love them so much. As far as I've seen, the breeding process starts with a male and female mating conventionally, and then the fertilized eggs will move from inside the body to outside by the swimming legs as seen in the video. When the babies hatch, they hatch directly from the egg membranes while attached to the swimming legs, and I'm assuming the egg shells and membranes eventually fall off or disintegrate.
Saw mine breeding, they do this awesome midwater dance, twirling around each other and bumping belly to belly. and I've watched them hatch, they kind keep trying to get back into mums swimming legs until she takes them out, they hang out there for a little while after hatching, then usually mum wants to go malt the shell off thats usually looking a bit stretched, i think they wait until the babies are hatched just to do it. I keep Crystal red shrimp and orange neocards
I also started shrimp not so long ago, at first it was to get a cleaning crew for a new aquarium with fish that was supposed to be a self sufficient ecosystem with the least amount of maintenance, but they took things over and are sharing their home with neon fish. Apparently mine aren't having issues with water changes.
I've set up a 5.5 gallon for a neocaridina shrimp tank it's been cycling for a month now. Going to wait another month before getting shrimp for it. I'm hoping to get some at the reefexpo in march
best video to me by far not including your betta breeding series off topic im doing something crazy trying to breed my dumbo ear male with a koi female i spawned last year with your help lol you are getting so good at this you tube i mean fish tube thanks sis were fish family
My favorite shrimp color is gonna have to be orange rilis, I like to call them dreamcicle shrimp because they remind me of dreamcicle popsicles (I think they're also called creamcicles, they're the orange and white ones lmao)
I love your videos you have inspired me to breed Bettas too you are always informative and fun this video is so cute ❤️😍 I love freshwater shrimp and their little grabby claws 😂😬
This entire footage was filmed on a cellphone O_O (crazy right!?) we used both a galaxy 7 and galaxy s9 as well as a clip on lens kit amzn.to/2E9Q6I1 for the super close macro shots

Can you share your secret/method. 1) Maybe, my bucket of clean water isn't as high as yours??
TBH…I've had shrimp for so long and yet…you taught me SO much!!! 🙊 Thanks so much! 💚 Great video.
Thats awesome! I'm glad I was able to share something cool about them ^_^
now I really want shrimp... they're just so... MAJESTIC
Who knew that little shrimp could be so magical...
People say “those are boring”
I think they are pretty cool and really interesting!
The girls are clever. They know where to hide to give their babies the best chance of survival...but I really wish I should see the little ones hatch
shrimp are totally awesome I have them in all 3 of my tanks :)
"grabby grabby" 🤣
Thanks for this video. I just sent it to my sister because my 5 year old nephew wanted to know if shrimp were friendly.
That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw one of my shrimp doing the curved grooming: shrimp yoga! :)
Best new (COVID-)hobby: pet shrimp! :)
Really cool video and beautiful shrimp! You’ve got a soothing vocal lilt, very easy on the ears!
I have 3 amano shrimp in a 29 gallon community tank. They are really cool to watch when they come out. I really want to setup my old 5 gallon tank as a shrimp tank at some point.
I agree, their so beautiful and helpful in your tank!😊
I am quickly becoming a big shrimp fan :D
Creative Pet Keeping how could you not!😂
Owen McWilliam agreed
I have brine shrimps, and they are so cute and affectionate 🤗
I feel like the tank's empty space needs something. A betta, green neon tetras, sparkling gourami, etc.? Absolutely adore how you call them "grabby grabby hands".
Nice job on the video....I love these little guys too
Love your commentary! Could we have an update video on your shrimp knowledge please 😊🇦🇺❤️
Very nice and informative video about shrimps. Thanks for sharing Kasia🤗
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing quality close-ups
This is my favorite shrimp video 💘 🦐
That makes me so happy!
Love this video 😍😍😍😍😍
"Big shrimps attack oh no!"😍
LMAOOOOO !!
This is so amazing I have never seen colored shrimp The only ones I have ever seen Are crystal clear you can see through them
I’m binging your videos rn and I’m living for them 😍😍😍 great content💛
Getting more and more motivated to start a shrimp tank!
Wooo Hooo!!
I used To kept Two Pair of Cherry Shrimps and they are Awsome
I also started shrimp not so long ago, at first it was to get a cleaning crew for a new aquarium with fish that was supposed to be a self sufficient ecosystem with the least amount of maintenance, but they took things over and are sharing their home with neon fish. Apparently mine aren't having issues with water changes.
I have some old fish tanks I haven't been doing anything with. I really should set one up and keep some shrimp and other critters.
My favourite golden shrimp 💕
I've set up a 5.5 gallon for a neocaridina shrimp tank it's been cycling for a month now. Going to wait another month before getting shrimp for it. I'm hoping to get some at the reefexpo in march

I had no clue shrimp could be so interesting ^_^
I know right. BTW thanks for replying. I love your vids
My favorite shrimp color is gonna have to be orange rilis, I like to call them dreamcicle shrimp because they remind me of dreamcicle popsicles (I think they're also called creamcicles, they're the orange and white ones lmao)
Just watched your shrimp video. I'm new to shrimp. But then I watched your maintenance timelapse. Man I love your style and narrative! 😍👊. New sub!
