Did you know any of these creatures existed? And if one were gonna move into your house, which would you choose (and what would you name them 👀)?

As a german subscriber it was fascinating to learn that house elfs apparently were also rooted in the "Heinzelmännchen" 🤔 Unfortunately I grew up with them being a throwaway line whenever a kid made a mess and did not want to admit it. As a swede, I grew up with my mom telling me stories about the different creatures we used to believe existed, not very common for my peers, which is why I appreciate it even more.
Thank you for bringing up Tomte or hustomte (house gnome) as most say cause tomte is also Swedish for Santa Claus
And have to admit the English pronunciation made me giggle, probably seems ignorant but any not native English speaker can probably relate to how amusing it can be hearing your language with English pronunciation

I also found his pronunciation of tomte to be very funny. I still think about ”tomti” and find myself smiling. Though he seems to apparently know more about tomtar (or tomtis) than the average swede, as I had no idea about the reward system nor what they would do if you were being naughty. I just thought they gave protection to anyone without payment in mind or that they hid themselves away from anyone but animals. Oh well, you learn something new every day.

In Croatia, we have a popular children's book called "Priče iz davnine" by Ivana Brlić Mažuranić. This book is perfect if you are interested in the most famous examples of Croatian fairytales inspired by Slavic folklore. In one of the stories, "Šuma Striborova", fire spirits called domaći have similar function as helpers, though they are more childlike and playful.

It could also match the rural environment they appear in where small hairy creatures appear. Perhaps the detail came from catching glimpses of a scurrying mouse or cat. Unlikely there would be hairless creatures scurrying around in that environment.

The Tomte (or "tonttu") are also a thing in Finnish mythology. You have to leave them food during Christmas or they might burn down your house. Also, "saunatonttus" can be rather mean if you disrespect your sauna (drink alcohol or fart there). One lady was allegedly skinned alive by one and her skin was hung on the damper handle.

In one of my top favourite live-action Disney films _Darby O'Gill and the Little People,_ when [Sean Connery] tells Darby the daughter has gone to retrieve the horse, Darby realizes she's being lured by the fae, saying, "She'll be chasin' a pooka..."

you missed one. The Silde. Similar to a house elf the Silde wants nothing more then to make the people who live in her home happy. I say her house because to her everything in the house except the family is at her command she can even change the wall paper if she wishes and she'll do house hold chores as well. She can also act as guardian. There in an anime called the ancient magus bride and there is one of them that takes care of the Magus's house and over the course of the anime you see this and even what happens when the family moves a out of the house as she doesn't go with them. She isn't tied to the family like house elf would be but she needs a family to look after to stay healthy. They go into a state of deep loneiless when they don't have one of those and it can make them die. almost like a broken heart. You can find more information Iam sure but I wanted you to know that you missed one that Thought was pretty interesting.

But I do watch a lot of anime and play video game sand you can find a few there in in say like persona games or SMT. But In The Anceot Magus bride Silver is a Silde and you will see her doing house hold chores in the back ground like dishes and at one point she is more or less Hugging the MC in a protective way to keep her away from a visitor. That was why I said Guardian as well. Yeah you can find more by seacrhing Celtic mythical creatures.

They follow some similar ideas to the ones presented in this video: little goblin-like creatures. According to the legend, one can make this deal with an alux: the creature will take care of the crops in exchange for food from the harvest.
If the farmer keeps giving him the ofertory, the alux will make sure that no animal will hurt the plantations and it will scare every thief that comes close. However, if the farmer forgets the deal, the alux will get offended, and mischief against the person.

It’s (commonly) Geordie slang for the colour brown and the broone was adapted to ‘brownie’ when the Girl Scouts were introduced and at the beginning of our guidebooks is a short story of how some lazy children became brownies by helping their mother tidy up the house. Also ‘broon’ is another name for Newcastle Brown Ale - an alcoholic beverage made in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

It's still creepy how Rowling presented elves as abused slave race with extreme case of Stockholm syndrome, when in mythologies she drew from, they are depicted more as ambiguously benevolent spirits rather than race of sentient beings, have to be placated and respected by humans, and can either abandon disrespectful owners altogether or become a real domestic menace

It's because the IP is linked to transphobia and that part of the game's plot is antisemitic because of it's reference to blood libel. Having a bunch of jews try to kidnap a child to use in a ritual sacifice isn't the best look.

It was interesting to me that during the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry's first thought was to evacuate the house-elves so more of them didn't suffer Dobby's fate. Instead, led by (of ALL people) Kreacher, they went after the Death Eaters with a *vengeance* and helped turn the tide of the battle. Hogwarts was their home too, and they wanted to participate in its defense. I could easily see Brownies (Broonies) and Phooka doing the same.
(Side note: I do sympathize with those that are boycotting the Harry Potter franchise, but I do separate the art from the artists. A lot of creators are awful people, yet still produce great works).

    • @Birchlead
      @Birchlead ปีที่แล้ว

Considering most people angry at others not making a personal choice to boycot have made excuses to buy other things made by bigots knowingly or otherwise….. I just dismiss them. They pretend they’ve never bought something like that when everyone 100% has. Everyone has their own choices to make and what to support or not 🤷‍♀️ others can’t make that choice for people. I don’t think everyone else was evil for not boycotting lettuce products during the farmer protest like I did. Bc that was my choice! Not theirs. And it didn’t paint their entire character some kind of way to me, especially when they were fighting battles in other areas, or boycotting other things. There’s a limited amount of “activism” people can do and if the limit for someone is a single game to just unwind to from all the other shit they do then….. they’re just a human person yo

My in-universe theory on the house elves work as servants despite having such strong magic is that they are contracted to work via ancient pacts between wizards and much more powerful elves/faeries. In other words, the Fae Lords, probably from the Seelie, loaned their own servants to wizards, and themselves gain some amount of power from the contracts. In fact, house elves themselves would probably be much weaker in magic if they weren't honoring the contracts.
It would explain alot of their behavior, I think.

By you're content in the past I don't think you're transphobic, nor do I think you're unconcerned with issues relating to transphobia. I think you see cool folklore used and want to explain the origin. I'm cool with this because Rowling doesn't profit off such content, which she uses to donate to anti-trans groups and justify her statements. But this video directly promoted games she profits off of.
