In 2011 Souther, at age 65 put out an album entitled NATURAL HISTORY. It includes the hits he wrote back in the day such as BEST OF MY LOVE, NEW KIDS IN TOWN and FAITHLESS LOVE. I am 70 now and listening to Souther, with his incredible voice, retell these stories of love and loss is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard.

Thank you for J.D. Souther's catalog. I too remember the way the Sound of Southern California influenced Rock and Roll and how the ballads were beautifully written. They were like snapshots of what life in California once was like. The beauty of nature and the human experiences when living in a beautiful place in the sun. I loved this music, It was so sensual and emotional.
JD was the voice that smooth rock / country rock loved to have on backing vocals back in the day. He was in that role on the great song & album by Linda Ronstadt called Prisoner in Disguise. Even if you don’t react to it on your channel, I’d recommend you give it a listen. It’s a beautiful song, and JD’s backing vocal is sublime, especially at the song’s climax. Literally gives me goosebumps each time… and I’m 64 yrs old & don’t get goosebumps!

It's great to see someone's reaction to the first time hearing these now classics that a lot of us grew up on. The 70's was probably the most interesting decade of music as you have alluded to, the sound kept changing. Not only changing but it is a decade where you had instrumental, country, pop, disco, soul, rock, TV themes and even novelty songs going to the top 10 of Billboard songs of the week. Just a great and interesting decade of music.

Always have liked this song and i think he has a sweet voice. The Roy Orbison vibe I think is not just the words but he had that tempo and I think the rhyrhm with the drum rims. Very much like and good insight. You have to be older I think to appreciate such a sweet voice as his and true natural high notes. This is my fave of his and might be the only one Love the words and now will have to look into his writing and the James Taylor.
The 70s were my teenage years and it's hard to summarize the decade in a few minutes or a few sentences or with a handful of songs. We had the beginning of progressive rock, disco and heavy metal. We also had great easy listening from James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Elton John, Carly Simon, etc. We also had ELO, & Supertramp who redefined what "rock" music was not to mention Queen and so many others. I began playing guitar in '74 with my first song being a John Denver classic. All in all it was a very diverse decade and IMO still some of the best music ever produced. Thanks for dedicating time to my favorite decade of music.

It reminds you of Roy Orbison because its supposed to remind you of Orbison! J.D Souther wrote the song as an ode to honor Orbison's music who was one of his idols. Even as a subscriber, I'm late to the party. Aside from the obvious Roy Orbison connotations - the lyrics, vocals and drum rhythm - this song is firmly rooted in Doo Wop, one of the great genres of 1950s Rock 'n' Roll.

Very good Angela. This is an average song for the 1970's. He does sound like Roy Orbison as does Chris Isaak. And the early 70's is much different from the late 70's. The late 70's actually introduces us to Rap.

When this song came out, I found it very reminiscent of "Only the Lonely" by Roy Orbison. I still do. This song by JD Souther has an early-1960s sound to it, just like all those C-Am-F-G songs from that era.

Nice choice, Angela. What a voice! His album 'Black Rose' (c.1975) was a great favourite of mine back in the day. He could easily have fit smoothly into the Eagles, and made a significant contribution to their sound anyway. J D deserved a lot more mainstream success than he ever got for some reason, though much admired among his peers. One of the keys to understanding the cool music of the 70s is it was all about albums, unlike the 60s which was all about hit singles, and by the middle of this decade most of the artists that focused on the singles market were mediocre commercial hitmakers (with exceptions of course). In fact I despaired of listening to the radio completely at that time, getting all my good grooves directly from the record stores, live concerts and word of mouth. Some important artists resisted issuing singles at all, except when pressured by greedy marketing execs, and when they did it wasn't at all typical. So with respect, please don't embarrass yourself with an attempt at historical analysis. The decade's popular music was incredibly diverse and creative, so much more than disco, punk, Abba and Saturday Night Fever. You've barely scratched the surface and simply haven't heard enough to have a valid perspective yet. In fact, I'm still finding 'essential' stuff that I missed out on, and I've been listening a lot longer than you.

John Daniel Souther was a regular contributor to The Eagles songs in the early days. This song sounds like an Eagles ballad for this reason. I bought this single at aged 15. Not many of my people know of him. He's gorgeous too LoL

Nice choice, Angela. What a voice! His album 'Black Rose' (c.1975) was a great favourite of mine back in the day. He could easily have fit smoothly into the Eagles, and made a significant contribution to their sound anyway. J D deserved a lot more mainstream success than he ever got for some reason, though much admired among his peers.
One of the keys to understanding the cool music of the 70s is it was all about albums, unlike the 60s which was all about hit singles, and by the middle of this decade most of the artists that focused on the singles market were mediocre commercial hitmakers (with exceptions of course). In fact I despaired of listening to the radio completely at that time, getting all my good grooves directly from the record stores, live concerts and word of mouth. Some important artists resisted issuing singles at all, except when pressured by greedy marketing execs, and when they did it wasn't at all typical. So with respect, please don't embarrass yourself with an attempt at historical analysis. The decade's popular music was incredibly diverse and creative, so much more than disco, punk, Abba and Saturday Night Fever. You've barely scratched the surface and simply haven't heard enough to have a valid perspective yet. In fact, I'm still finding 'essential' stuff that I missed out on, and I've been listening a lot longer than you.
This song is so close to Roy Orbison's "Only The Lonely" I usually don't like that but this song is so damn good.

You should hear ot twenty years later as he was hearing it having not played it for many years he [put a updated touch to it. As i said he wrote and the eagles performed several of his tunes.
