  • This is just one of many projects I do when I'm not out hunting or researching. I enjoy thrift store hunting and plan to showcase some of my better finds. This is a gem I came across and glad I took the time to restore them. I have a very wide range of interests and hobbies.

Funny I bought an old Kenwood receiver from an old guy for $50 it came with an ADC 10 band graphic equalizer all ols school and 50 bucks as I was leaving his house he told me he's not going to need the JBL speakers anymore but the speakers have damage if I want them I can take them for nothing so I grabbed them and took them home when I got home it was the foam surround that were damaged so I replaced the foam surround and I got myself a great pair of speakers for free cost me I think $12 for the surrounds it was the first surrounds job I ever did and it came out perfect looks like Factory speakers.

Nice! It’s really not a hard job, just time consuming. The results are worth all the effort. Speakers like these aren’t made to this quality level anymore unless your willing to spend over 1k. Just tear apart a pair of new speakers and compare the frames and magnets to this era of speakers. You can definitely tell that the older ones have way better build quality. Some individuals even rebuild the cones and coils because the frames and magnets are worth the rebuild. Enjoy, you scored on that deal for sure.

I wish I had Patience. I am always in a rush and you just need to take your time, like you did, especially being your first EXCELLENT JOB!

Congrats I have a set of these as well I think I paid around 15-20 dollars usd a couple years ago and I too had to refoam the woofers. Those coil gaps are very tight on jbl subs.👍👍✌

I snagged a pair of LX500 for $100. Woofers did not need any recone. I love the sound and I'm thinking of upgrading the crossover even. Thinking of veneering the top with a nice curly wood veneer. Nobody insulates the midrange at this price range anymore .

I bought these new in 1990 and I have to refoam mine as well. Play Ozzy Osbourne's song No More Tears and/or Mama I'm Coming Home to really hear these speakers kick ass!

A man of many talents. This was really cool and informative. I liked the format. Very well done. I'm a little bummed that you didn't have KIX playing to test them out. :-)

MentalMetal thanks buddy! Sort of a new style of video and narrative I'm trying out. I'll try Kix on them next. I'll do a special video request.

I have a mint pair of LX55’s and picked up a pair of LX44’s today for $30! They need a reform. But already sound fantastic. I’ll fix em up this week. My 55”s have binding post. I’ll probably add a pair to the 44s. Also looking to upgrade the wires and dampen the cabinets?

Y'all Kno in abt 10 more years this very same speaker is shoot way up in value just like those blue jbls that like 10000$ notice the Craftsman ship in the cabinet by it's self what other spker is built like that

Most mid level to high end speakers from the late 70s to the early 90s are built this way. Klipsch, JBL, Boston, Cerwin Vega, Cambridge...etc. Your right about the prices rising as well. Audiophile equipment is finally being respected again and believe it or not, it's young kids and young adults driving the market. Vinyl and Magnetic tape are making a comeback too. I'm not saying it's a cleaner sound than digital but it is a warmer (analog) sound that is easy and pleasant on the ears. You can't go wrong in picking up a set of audiophile vintage speakers and rebuilding them. You won't find anything close these days in an affordable price range. Plus once they are refurbished you'll have an incredible sounding system and speakers worth 20x what you put into them.

Hi Matthew, I grew up listening to these speakers and I still have them, but the foam on them have been crumble for years. I'm finally up for repairing them. Can you direct me to where I can buy the foam for these specific woofers? What kit did you use? What epoxy did you use? Thx!

    • @matthewsummers1697

These speakers are indeed great. I've never heard anything like them. The range on them is spectacular and the investment in repairing them was worth every penny. With just a few hours of labor and around $35 total in purchasing and repairs I could never have bought anything close. I'm getting ready to do a repair video on some other JBL speakers I bought for $12. The next set is a pair of TLX151s. Here is a link to the repair kit. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F351483324724

I have the lx 22 model. I loved them but someone kicked the coke in and I’m only getting sound from the tweeter now. Could you help me figure out how to fix them? It’s separated completely around the edges and the center of woofer is caved in.

I just finished doing my foams on my JBL l36, turned out one spider was warped really bad and I had to have the whole woofer reckoned. I don’t notice a different between the two when listening to them, but part of me is thinking of reconeing the other one as well just so there both basically new, what do you think?

    • @matthewsummers1697
      @matthewsummers1697  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Jason B I think I would do the re-cone and here is why. I have read that after doing foam surrounds or a re-cone the sound production from the speakers gets better the more they are listened to. I think if you only did one you would notice a difference in the sound quality eventually.

@@matthewsummers1697 You're right! Tonight I just finished refoaming my jbl 125a woofer which comes out of the l36 and l26 jbls. There is definitely more punch out of the first refoamed woofer, so I had no choice but to do the other. I have the jbl lx44 also, and I think they are keepers.
