I am fortunate that I grew up with a mum who is a wonderful gardener, so I have always had plants in my life. I always recommend spider plants, pilea pepperomioides, pothos and schefflera for people new to houseplants because they are very forgiving and will give you lots and lots of rewarding green foliage in a very short period of time with very minimal care.
