Emmy and Paul I just want to let you know how much I love you both and your channel. I am 35 years old, married with 5 children (ages 14 down to baby) and can use all the frugal tips we can get. We moved to do missions work 4 years ago and are far away from family. Your channel is like a big warm hug. The way you talk, patiently share ides, bring us along for your everyday living, and Paul even has a yellow sock darn so we could see how to do it. You both are the sweetest.
Although you are much younger, you remind me how I felt going to my Grandparents home because they lived very much like you and Paul. It was always my favorite place to be!!! I never thought they were old fashioned, but rather they knew how to really live (I don't know how to articulate the feeling). It was special helping in their garden, cutting chives to go on the baked potatoes, learning to stitch, learning to cook from scratch, learning to play piano, having fun for free by playing board games while eating stovetop popcorn, renting a movie from the library or taking a walk in in woods, etc. I loved picking a classic book from the book shelf before bed and waking up to the smell of coffee and finding Grandma reading her Bible in the living room. It's funny, I only have a couple memories of ever eating at a restaurant with my grandparents and although I usually loved eating out as a kid, I preferred the delicious meals Grandma would make over take out! I even remember being disappointed one time when she made us a frozen pizza (which I loved to eat) because I wanted her cooking 😂
My Grandma passed away before we moved and I miss her so much! (Our 2nd youngest child's middle name is after my grandma). I wish there were more people like her, and I want to pass the old time ways to my children.
Sorry for writing you a novel, I just wanted to share the best I could how cozy and comforting it is to watch your channel. I'm praying for you and Paul and hope God continues to bless you both! Praying for Paul's Father to continue to feel better!

    🍎 Emmy and Paul,
    Beautiful day!
    About cleaning under the refrigerator.
My husband leans the refrigerator on one side while you can see with a broom or small brush to brush under the refrigerator. Because using a long brush and not looking can push the dust up into the refrigerator coils more. About compost. We don't do composting, but if we did, I would have a separate blender to grind up all the leftovers before I put it in the soil. This way you don't have to use a 1950's tool and be in the sun to grind it up and save a bunch of time.
About mending a pair of socks, all you have to do is put the fabric together and stitch it up which takes one minute, then I have that time to go in the kitchen to make cookies and homemade ice cream that's not full of preservatives. Buying buying, going to one grocery store after the other to chase the sale for food, is ridiculous and not smart. I have done that, did that and we have lost over $6,000 because of all the hurricanes, snow and ice storms that we literally had to put everything in the garbage. Adding up those disasters that we had in the garage freezer and kitchen freezer and refrigerator, was over $6,000 that we could have gone on a vacation to Paris, Rome and France and back! Saving thousands of dollars on chasing sales for the freezer is a myth and so the grocery stores make a lot of money and the appliance stores make even more buying freezers after a disaster to fill up again and throw in the garbage. Also, people forget the food in the bottom of the freezer, so they throw half of the food in the freezer in the garbage anyway. Now, we did it again last year and had to throw away a thousand dollars worth of food and we're going to be moving pretty soon, so we have to throw away the freezer food again, not to mention try to sell the $500 freezer. I think my mother did it the smart way, by walking to the the grocery store everyday to buy the big dinner for the day. She did it everyday and there was no leftovers to throw away from the disaster or waste because you want to eat something else the next day. My father used to buy a half a cow when he decided to buy a freezer and every time he opened the freezer, he wanted to know who was stealing the meat, because he counted so much and there's only so much in the freezer! As my mother's family came by and my mother was giving away the fresh meat to her family and that was the last time my father said he was going to buy a half of a cow! So unfortunately, I think we better stick to watching the beautiful Chateaus of France, as we're in love with Europe.🌴

I use old socks for cleaning instead of using paper towels. I plan on creating cleaners out of vinegar and lemon juice. I made a barbecue pork roast for sandwiches on Monday. I'm eating through it as we speak. I also did some extreme yard work myself this year. It has saved me from paying a landscaper.

When we found out how bad toothpaste with fluoride was for you we started using baking soda as a tooth powder. It cleans our teeth and is healthy for our gums. And is so cheap to use. We never buy toothpaste any more. This is something we had heard our parents and grandparents used. And a big box for arround $2 lasts a long time. We use it in the kitchen too.

We are on spring break this week days before my daughter turns 10. It just wasn't in the budget this year to do a big party at the house (repairs needed) & so I allowed my daughter 2 friends for a sleepover. I let them make their own pizza & decorate the cupcakes my daughter made. We get annual passes every year to our local water park, which gives us 2 free guests. We took her friends the next day. Most of our friends have passes as well & they were on break too. We invited all the friends who could to join us. WELL...like 12 other friends came plus their moms. We ended up with a group of like 21 at the park to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Food at the water park is expensive ($20 for one pizza) so I planned a small picnic lunch for our group of 4 but didn't want our large group left out so I quadrupled it. I made 4 large subs cut into 4 small sandwiches, brought pkts of mayo & mustard I had from fast food, sliced tomato & lettuce. Threw together a fruit (whole apples, oranges, grapes) & veggies tray (broccoli, carrots & tomatoes)& dips from what I had on hand, and made a pitcher of lemonade from a mix I had on hand. We brought the cupcakes the girls decorated. Altogether I spent less than $30 to feed this crowd. Everybody bought individual drinks or dip n dots or concession snacks they wanted. We ended up with 2 whole subs leftover to eat later. But I was so proud we had such an awesome celebration on a budget. The next day, we had a friend offer for my daughter to come horseback riding at their stable for free. All in all, we managed to celebrate big for double digits birthday for next to nothing & the kids had a blast & created beautiful memories. I am proud of our frugal journey & trying to teach my daughter too.
While off this week, I also started trying my hand at gardening again & started some seeds.

@@FrugalMoneySaver I also do the orange vinegar cleaner. I also grow veggies from scraps...green onion bulbs & onion roots in water until they begin to sprout, then transfer to soil. Pineapple tops, Celery & lettuce. I am currently trying to start bell peppers & tomatoes from seeds of kitchen scraps. Old bed sheets get ripped into pieces & placed in a jar with a solution for dryer sheets. I make my own Dawn powerwash. I also recently tried my hand at dehydrating cranberries. They came out great.
And I've stopped buying paper towels. Also installed a bidet on my toilet to save on tp. And we have almost entirely stopped eating out. I meal prep for the week/weeks ahead. And we do our own nails. I mow my own lawn & hope to start my own compost bin this summer. Thanks for your inspiring videos. You taught me to save my butter wrappers. We shop thrift & as such, I was able to find my daughter a sewing machine she wanted for Xmas for $17! I am re-learning to sew after many years to teach my daughter & use fabrics found at thrift stores too. I do so many things you show on your videos. As a middle age single mom, I have to save everywhere I can to afford our humble home & pay for my daughter's passion in dance. We sacrifice many luxury conveniences to live the life we want.

My favourite thing to do when we were first married in 1977 was darn my husbands socks. I now find I’m doing the same thing with my granddaughter’s woollen school tights. She seems to put a hole in them every other day 😂. We have moved into the small living room for the winter as it has a log burner in it and we are not putting the central heating on in the rest of the house. Our heating bills have at least doubled here in England. I no longer use the dishwasher, we wash pots by hand now. Every way we can economise we do. Thanks for a great video.

Like you I make all my cleaning products . I buy spices in bulk . Make frugal recipes with minimum butter and eggs . I freeze fruit on special like strawberries and I stew apples and I freeze them too . I redesign clothes that that have become smaller around the waist . Cut them up and put on yoga bands . I cut pants and turn them into 3/4 shorts . I use tvp to bulk up mince recipes and hamburgers . Some of my friends even add baked beans , tvp and mince to lasagna recipes . A recipe for six can become a recipe for 10 . I make cheap dessert recipes like apple crisp, and self saucing puddings when I have family over . A very happy birthday to your dear mother in law and hope your father in law keeps making a good recovery . You are both truly blessed to be surrounded by a loving family from both sides . Socks are such a challenge! I use a tennis ball instead of a jar bottom when it's just a tiny hole that needs darned. I'm hard on socks because I wear them in the house instead of slippers and usually don't have much left of the bottoms worth darning. So those become dusting and waxing mittens! My tip for getting the most wear out of socks is to buy a multipak. So much easier to mate after washing and you don't have to toss one if it's mate gets ripped up. I bought a six pack of really quality white low cuts 12 years ago. I gave a pair to my Italian daughter-in -law
when she arrived for a visit sockless. I still have 2 pairs and a spare left and in good shape! 👍🤗

Omg! I cannot believe that I just thought of this. Don't toss those onesie socks! If you don't want to use them for cleaning, clip the edge and unravel the yarn! Save it for mending other socks and large holes in other items or creative ideas. Keep the yarn bundles in a small tote with your sewing supplies.

Hi Emmy. My Mom always kept a small used light bulb in her sewing kit. She would slide it into the socks to spread out the material to make it easy to darn the socks. When she passed ( at age 86, I'm 55now) I wanted her worn , well used sewing box. It held a lot of memories. Including the light bulb! I sew my husband's work clothing with the grid pattern also. Makes the sewn sections so much sturdier.

I have been going back to the old ways, not only because of prices going up, but because I really enjoy it. I started making my own breads and pasta. They taste better than the store bought also. For cleaning my windows and mirrors, I like using my husband's old undershirts. The undershirts don't leave fiber behind. Cheap vodka is a great cleaner. The vodka is a disinfectant and has no oder. Also, it makes my faucets shine.

I can't wait to try this pasta meal tomorrow night! The newest frugal trick I use is sprouting celery and lettuce ends. I place them in water on the window sill. Once they sprout roots, I plant them. They don't grow whole heads/stalks, but I can still clip and eat what does grow.

My father was a construction worker and we did not have money to waste, My parents had grown up during the Depression and were skilled in stretching the dollar for four kids! One of my chores was to learn to darn my father's socks without any lumps or bumps! Yes. I definitely have been doing more around the home or doing free things for entertainment and seeing what I can make w/ ingredients I have in the house already. I cook every two weeks for a lunch service called Friday Cafe which helps feed unhoused folks as well as folks experiencing food insecurity. I was one of the dessert makers and I saw I had a cup of ricotta cheese left and an orange left. So I looked online to see if there was a recipe incorporating both and found one for orange ricotta cookies. They came out great!! Sometimes the most random ingredients you have can make something special and tasty vs having to go buy more groceries to make things. Plus you to use up what you have, don’t waste food, and you get to be creative. I do it for meals and snacks for myself all the time too. One time I had some leftover sour cream and didn’t want it to sit in the fridge and go to waste as it likely would have if I just didn’t think about it. I found a recipe in the Joy of Cooking for sour cream cookies and I made them. They were yummy and I would have them w/ tea at night as my treat for the day. Who knew? Sour cream cookies! It was fun to try them and they were awesome!

Firstly, I don't quite know why, but whenever you have mentioned darning a sock, I immediately hear The Devine Ms Stritch singing Ladies Who Lunch and substituting the line about hats with "Does anyone still darn a sock?" Makes me laugh.
A trick I learned with containers is to make the drainage hole at least an inch up the side of the container (if it's a deep container maybe 2") The reason being that the roots shouldn't dry out as quickly, because the reservoir will keep a small supply of water. I have done it ever since, and it works for me.

I have nearly eliminated all eating out to save more money, I recently took out a meal to a neighbor who had surgery, I cooked a chicken carcass, made chicken gravy, made homemade biscuits & whipped up some cookies for a frugal meal to help out. I've been working extra hard to use everything up. ( I also patched a hole in my work shirt too)

One of my garden centers puts all their pots on a shelf outside for anyone that wants them. They have mentioned that you should always wash with a little bleach water just to avoid any cross contamination if there was ever anything in it. They are organic but still mention it. My girlfriends husband does a lot of woodworking. I asked a couple years ago for a sock darner. He thought I was nuts but made me one lol.

I also recommend investing in a magnifying headset. They're about $14 for a basic model with a flashlight, but well worth the price to save the eyestrain. After all eye damage and heavier glass prescriptions are a lot more expensive. And in my mind you're still saving money on all the socks and other clothing items you're mending

Boy, did I need the darning socks. I have a little stack of socks that I have ‘forgotten’ about. Emmy, you motivated me to ‘get to it.’
Cutting back: our refrigerator at the beach is limping along… sometimes drips water on the floor.
Two years ago, we would have already Gone out and bought one - since it is working we’re hoping to make it to November when they’re Great Black Friday specials!
A note… I had been a member of our little town’s florist ‘fresh delivery Flower 🌺 Club.
I thought it was a luxury I could definitely do without!! After eight months I realised Flower Club’s monthly delivery nurtured my soul.
Because I was so frugal for so many years, Flower Club does not ‘destroy’ our budget. I called today and paid for Flower 🌺 Club for the next year💚🍀💚

This isn't something I've started recently, but something I've noted recently. I make DIY detergent (powder) to fill 5 gallon buckets. I have 2 at any given time...one I'm using from, and the next full one, ready to use. I put a slip of paper in the last full bucket the day I began using from it. I am nearly to the bottom of it now--can probably do 7 or 8 more loads of laundry with it. It lasted 7 months and a week! I make the detergent with laundry bar soap (I usually make my own when I'm making bath soap--I use coconut oil as the fat in laundry bar soap as it cleans well)...tubs of Oxy-Clean (I'm allergic to Borax, so this is an alternative), and homemade sodium carbonate (super washing soda)--just bake sodium bicarbonate (baking soda--I buy it in bulk for various purposes) at 400F for about an hour and allow to cool. This saves me money, time, and I supply my Mom's house with detergent so she never has to buy it. I haven't bought detergent in 10 years!
Great video!! Glad Paul's Dad is doing well!

Perfect timing on your darning lesson. I’m 62 and have my grandma’s darning mushroom, which I also remember my mom using darning my dad’s holey socks when I was a kid. My hubby has been getting holes in the big toe area of his sock and in past, have used his holey socks for staining wood. Not anymore. Have about 10 holey toe socks of his and going to attempt to darn to save the socks, in turn save $ not buying new socks! Love the one pot recipe. Love your channel. Thank you!

My mom low-ball complained, but I did it all through college and most of my marriage too. It's still a little too light on the meat in my husband's eyes though so we've settled on 3/4 pound😅

Yes I have mending and darning for long time, my friends use to say that I was born in wrong time as teenager would darn my socks or fixes hole in a t-shirt were they would just buy new ones. I use rags to clean with and have make orange and vinegar cleaning solution for about 10 years now. Again my friends use think it was wired not to buy a cleaner, I eventually lost a lot friends as they just couldn’t understand how come I was not doing the normal thing like shopping, going out to dinner, going out to entertain. They didn’t want visit each other home they just wanted to go out. They didn’t want to play board games, card games or watch DVD they wanted to go casino, to move theatre or out to a concerts, I just didn’t have the money to do those things, I didn’t have the money to buy brand names clothes and they thought buying at thrift stores was gross or borrowing from the library was not cool. Sadly I chose to stop be friends with them because it was affecting my health and my mental state. I still don’t have lost of money as on disability I much prefer to live a simple lifestyle and enjoy the things that I do have then be unhappy because I don’t fit in with people who say I a friend.

Your meal looks delicious and a good way to use leftovers as well as for the first-time meal. Even taco meat or a little leftover chicken or roast would be good in it and whatever veggies you need to use up. I like how you reduce sugars and dairy in the recipes as most don't need as much as they suggest.
The gardening ideas are great and will be used soon. Thank you!!! 💕🙏

My mom had a darning basket she saved for Grandma when she visited, mom had grandma's wooden darning egg, and wow grandma finished that darning quickly. I add a tablespoon of baking soda to the cider vinegar when making orange vinegar, I scrape out fruit off the rind and I don't make the vinegar until I have enough orange rind, I put the rinds in the freezer, then run them through the salad spinner when thawed out, then fill the jar, then i mix the baking soda, with the vinegar until it is disolved. Have fun on Sunday at Paul's Mom's Birthday, Happy Birthday to Paul's mom🍰🍰🥧🍰🥧🍹🍸🍷🍺

You brought back memories of my mother darning socks in the evening while we watched television. She always used a light bulb to put the sock over. She was a very talented sewer. She even made clothes for us. I can remember shopping for pattens with her. She had one of those Singer sewing machines with the big pedal that you had to pump back and forth until she got an electric sewing machine for Christmas one year.
I am going to have to try that homemade cleaner. I use other homemade cleaners but I need to try that one in the bath tub. I have some makeup remover cloths like that. I'm going to start using those, too.
There are certainly things we've been doing without, like eggs. We bought eggs for the first time this week in quite a while. I don't buy cleaners and make them homemade and I'm so happy to add a new one to my repertoire. The citrus cleaners are so good for grease.
Thanks for another good vlog and I'm so glad that Paul's father is better.
