The whole music box performance was done in one take, And a very nervous Sally Howes performed it infront of 100 extras! Absolute stunning how Sally and Dick were able to perform together what is known as two separate songs at the same time.
This song and the scene to go with it are very symbolic. Firstly, you see Truly as a pretty, precious doll on a music box and Caractacus as a flimsy, happy-go-lucky clown. It symbolises what Truly and Caractacus are: one's a beautiful but too-cutesy member of the upper-middle class society who's rigid for her own good. It's why the song's first line's rhetorical: "What do you see, you people gazing at me? You see a doll on this music box that's wound by a key". It's about how everyone in society and those around her see Truly. The other's a clown from the lower working class who's trying to impress everyone including the woman he loves but who's too flimsy for his own good. Secondly, you see the clown getting slapped in the face by the doll twice when he tries to approach her - it mirrors Caractacus' two failed and untimely interactions with Truly from earlier in the film. The first being when Truly tries talking to him about Jeremy and Jemima playing truant. Caractacus gets annoyed and they argue about Truly criticising his parenting skills. The second's when Caractacus runs Truly's car off the road and into the pond whilst taking the children for their picnic. Thirdly, the clown tries all he can to court the doll but catches sight of his reflection in the mirror which makes him open his eyes - he sees himself for what he is. In order for Truly to like him, Caractacus has to quit acting like an idiot and change his ways. Fourthly, Truly breaks her doll-like character for a moment by pushing him into the mirror to get his attention. It means that already Truly's now starting to love Caractacus and she wants him in her life. She's "waiting for love's first kiss". So Caractacus starts to redeem himself and changes his personality hence that Truly's "the answer to my wishes" and he doesn't want her to leave. Fifthly, the clown starts properly courting the doll because his "heart beats so unruly because I love you, Truly. Honest Truly, I do". The clown tries to kiss the doll's hand at the end of the song but the doll retracts it in time - it mirrors that rigidity aka the social status has won. Even though Truly's yearning for Caractacus' love for her and vice versa, they aren't of the same social class. She's "longing to be free" but her problem's that she's "under a spell" aka the social divide somewhat like Jack and Rose in Titanic went through. No one else can see this but them. It's only by the end of the film that Caractacus and Truly see eye to eye properly and declare their requited love for each other. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!!!)
I heard that Truly pushing him into the mirror was unscripted because Van Dyke had never seen himself in costume until then and got distracted, though I could be wrong.
Truly Scrumptious You're truly, truly scrumptious Scrumptious as a cherry peach parfait When you're near me It's so delicious Honest Truly, you're the answer to my wishes Truly Scrumptious Though I may seem presumptuous Never, never, ever go away My heart beats so unruly Because I love you truly Honest Truly, I do
The whole scene is a masterpiece as it practically goes for the first moments of the dummy guys first moments as he stumbles around and realized in a mirror and is shocked at his appearance, idk man I love this scene
I think we can do better than this. This particular style of movies involving wholesome plot, music, dreamy world etc. needs a touch of a talented director.
The pure musical genius of writing two separate songs that each stand on their own, but can also be sung together and it actually works wonderfully! GENIUS and AMAZING!
I watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang VHS tape on TV in my room. Sally Ann Howes passed away, let God may her heaven in peace. She will always young, beautiful guardian angel. I sing one of her songs of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang called “A Doll on a Music Box”. RIP Sally Ann Howes (1930-2021). I miss you Sally Ann Howes! 😇❤️
Also, she played by wonderful character of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” of Truly Scrumptious” she was wonderful actress. Sally Ann Howes made a wonderful life of her age. She’s 91 years old. ❤😇
This has always been my favorite song in this movie!! I still get chills every time I listen to it. My momma and I used to listen to Disney musicals in the car any time we went somewhere together (growing up, I went literally EVERYWHERE with my momma)...we would duet and "choreograph car dance moves" to every song...this song was always our favorite (followed by Dreamgirls....and some VeggieTales songs haha)! and we would get so into it, if my siblings tried to sing along with us, my mom would pause it and make them shut up cause we were trying to "preform" our car ride duet!!! haha miss those days....
I was all for this until I realized you weren't an only child. Then it got a bit depressing. I'd have probably decked my sibling if they trapped me in a car musical I wasn't even allowed to participate in myself.
This has always been my favorite song and scene from this movie! I love it so much! When I was 8 years old I sang this song at an audition for Suessical which I then got and had a role of a Who from Whoville! But this scene is so beautiful and fun. The way they can sing different songs but blend them together so beautifully astounds me…
Best scene in the entire movie!! Whenever I watch this movie it is always this scene where I just gaze in amazement of how the whole thing was planned and acted out!!
love the doll costume and how she moves exactly like a doll in a music box.*thinks*WAIT do they still sell them anyways i haven't seen one since i was little.i remember opening mine and listening to the lullaby,so peaceful.
@@emilysmith7629 honestly same. Not every pretty old song has to be folded into the endless Christmas repertoire! Even if the characters are pretending to be giant toys, or make mention of brown paper packages (*cough cough*).
Lyrics: {TRULY} What do you see? You people gazing at me? You see a doll on a music box that's Wound by a key How can you tell? Without any insight on the scenes leading up to this performance, and seeing the two main characters as they are present; two dolls, one in love with an unresponsive music doll, I think it's sad. Imagine decades later, a descendant of the toy maker is in the decrepit storage room of the castle to find the two dolls dusty and cobwebbed. With them, a young child asks about the human sized toys. The adult says that long ago, they used to play a song for the king at the time. Now, however, they aren't able to work. "It was recorded their act was breathtaking to any that saw it." the adult adds. "Do you know how it went?" the child asks. With a hum, the adult recalls the doll's lore. The woman turns on a colorful triangle music box singing about wanting to be free by a kiss. The man confesses his love for the woman before him. But before he could kiss the girl, the wound up dolls would stop playing until wound again, thus restarting the act. Every play, the cycle was neverending. And now, they sit undisturbed in darkness forgotten. Their songs never to play again. Lost to time. And that's how they'll remain for decades more.
I've been watching this movie and listening to this soundtrack as long as I can remember, and I recently discovered that Richard M. Sherman (one of the writers of the songs in this movie) was once married to a now deceased cousin of my grandfather's, their daughter, is also my cousin, although distantly.
In these days and times when people try to behave hard, gangster etc. Yet the very same people KNOW who my in game character "Truly Scrumptious" is named after. They show serious cracks in their gangster armor!
While I must first say that I absolutely love this tune, and it's my favorite segment from the movie, I must say..., upon listening to it here again on TH-cam, I noticed an ironic twist in the lyrics... When Sally and Dick start singing their separate parts simultaneously, and specifically at the 1:45 mark, right after the music box doll sings, "You cannot see..., how much I long to be free...", the marionette sings, "Never, ever, ever, go away..." Maybe I'm reading too much into it, as this is "Truly" a beautiful song, but I do feel it's an ironic twist on it...

thats amazing to know. I love trivia like that
"counter melodies"
what is known as counterpoint melodies, or simply 'counter melodies' like Keith says.
Brilliant musical number!
They were (are) both incredible talents.
"My hear beats so unruly
Because I love you truly..." 💞
Ughh that part is so adorable 💖💖💖

I wish I could find this with the mechanical noises from the movie, but without the background voices and noises that were also in that scene.
