      The long drawn out lines with all those syllables makes this a very difficult song to sing with proper timing and punctuation. How the hell he wrote these lyrics with the proper timing with the music....absolutely fucking genius.
      And it goes so well with his technically "bad," yet motionally raw singing voice.

    This song brings back so many memories of me and my dad. He was such a huge Rod Stewart fan. He bragged about his voice all the time. The MTV Rod Stewart Unplugged album came out when I was still in elementary school and my dad wanted that album so bad, but he had just been laid off from his job and he and my mom pinched pennies. But, they still rewarded work and I got an allowance for doing a good job around the house and doing chores. Well, I saved up enough allowance money to go into a Sam Goodey (anyone else remember that music store?) and I bought him the Rod Unplugged album on CD. I remember hiding it from him till his birthday and so excited to see the look on his face when I gave it to him. I had daydreams of the look on his face when I handed it to him. When that day came, nothing prepared me for his genuine reaction. Tears filled his eyes with pride and amazement. His son paid him forward at a young age. It was the first time I ever recall my dad treating me as a peer. He put the CD on after my mom and brother went to bed and just he and I listened to Rod the Mod for hours Unplugged. Just reciting this brings a tear to my eye.

    This song always gets me.
    I really loved an ex who was about a decade younger. He was really a brilliant and kind person to others.
    He was the only person who defended me, I think he feels this way, not because of me, but because the situation was so stressful, and he was so young going through so much, I cant blame him for walking away from the situation, I barely survived it.
    I miss him and often have moments where I hope he is ok and doing well.
    I miss him, I love him, a lot of days I want my friend back, but mostly I hope hes ok, and I cannot help but smile and wish him the best in life.
    I look younger than I am and all, but he was the one person who told me I was beautiful and I knew he wasn't lying or trying to trick me.
    So to all the dudes who ended up here some how or another and dont hear anything as positive as this, Please know that some of those out of your life will defend you in your absence, speak and think highly of you, believe in you, and always hold only positive thoughts for you guys no matter how things end up.

    I can't believe it when this song came out, Rod Stewart was singing about mostly about my true and very painful journey. I too was young when I graduated high school and, then ended up enlisting in the U.S. Army, which I did love. I was in the best shape of my life, fit and, very sharp! The time spent overseas was the only thing painful for me in the Army, it continued after my enlistment when deciding to finish my reserve time out. I see women as God's beautiful creation, exactly what He has planned, although I almost completely gave up on women, truthfully! I stuck it out, worked hard all of my life, grew up in a foster home at a very early age since my mother passed away when I was just 5 years old. I never had a father, whom was an excuse by his wandering heart and his drinking, that his mother somewhat supported. My mother was the greatest women that ever lived, even my father's side of his family said this so many times. My mother took care of us 4 children she had, 1 sister and 2 brothers, she adored us all. I took after her traits, with darker hair and olive colored skin with thick hair, I was the only one. My sister and 2 brothers have had blonde or reddish blonde hair and fair complexion all of their life. My love and caring for others, were also passed down to me from my mother whom was full Italian, my father was from Scotland, my sister is also a very loving person. You see, you want to really know what is painful? I grew up mostly away from my siblings, we were separated from each other, living my life mostly in Florida. I was placed in a foster home after foster home. I will have to admit that when I was about 10 years old, I finally lived in a real family environment with loving foster parents. I worked very hard on a watermelon farm and, yes a Chicken Farm! If you want to call this a childhood? I learned values from my foster parents that taught me how to save and spend my hard earned $$$ dollars at a very young age, I even paid for mine and 7 other foster children clothes when we needed school clothes. My foster parents tried to teach this to them but, they were different and, they never learned what I was doing, never worked a hard day in their life. I even went barefooted most of my childhood because I got my butt busted for wearing the shoes I paid for one day after school outside to play. We were told to remove our school shoes and clothes after school, I even went to church with older shoes on my feet or flip flops and, yes older clothes. I bought my own first motorcycle, first car and, yes jealousy set in from the other kids because I saved and worked hard for my money, my foster parents would have to sit the others down almost daily and, let them know I worked for mine, I even bought most of my own Christmas gifts, then my foster parents told me even to put a limit on them. I was taught to respect my elders, say: yes umm and yes sir, open the door for others always, I was taught to be respectful toward others. If I did something out of line? I was told to get a switch and, my foster mom would wear me out with it mostly because my foster dad was working himself out on the road constantly. When I was 17 years old shortly before graduating from high school, I enlisted in the ARMY under "DEP" better known as Delayed Entry Program. In the end; after I got married for the first time in my life, which was mostly based under lies and cheats daily, I tried everything to save my marriage which my ex constantly destroyed. She cheated on me more times than anyone I know, no values in her life. We decided to visit my foster parents in Florida on our honeymoon, HA! What a fake life I was living, never told my foster parents anything she was doing, I showed them how proud I was to have a wife instead, this is one regret I still have to live with, why? It was to keep them from my pain and suffering, this was another value I learned early in life. The 2 things I can say I'm proud of now: My foster parents called me outside away from my wife, they said they wanted to talk to me away from the other kids and away from my wife. They told me them loved me very much, they were proud because out of all of their own kids and 7 other foster kids: I was the only one that graduated HS, they said I was a very good child and, they knew I did love my wife dearly, they said if I ever needed anything to let them know. I never did because they raised me correctly and now this is my life, they did more than their part. The 2nd thing I was proud of: I got married for the 2nd time, this time I have a wife that is loyal and, that loves me with all of her heart, mind, body and, soul. I do the same for her, she too had worked hard all of her life, on a real farm, we both found someone that helps us on our journey together with God in the center. I intended to make this a short story about How "Maggie" or older women always treated me; I even had an older girlfriend named "Jolene" that one of my other favorite singers in Dolly Parton used to sing about However, Jolene did really wear me out too, yes I did have an older girlfriend by the name of "Maggie" that kept me strung along, cheated, lied, made up and I still held her high, then wore me out again, something I can say: O' I wish I never seen her face! This is a 100% true story, everything I spilled my guts on, in the end I still hold high and respect women, for they are truly God's gift and, I take nothing for granted in life and, I thank God for making me whom I am today. I have had more than my share of pain and heartbreaks, lost a mother whom loved me dearly at an early age, I now live my marriage with an older wife that adores me, The truth is, it's not the cards you are dealt with but, rather it's what you make in life that matters the most from that hand. I still always believe everything happens for a reason, live life to the fullest like it's your last day, plan for longevity, above all! Forgive as this frees the soul!

    The first time I heard this voice, I was eavesdropping on some big kids (my name for teenagers) listening to the Jeff Beck group on the local FM radio station. About five years later, I heard this voice again on every radio station singing "Maggie May" and my first thought was "What took you so long?" Finally, I became a big kid with my very own Rod Stewart record (and I was nowhere near alone).

    I loved this song when I was 12 upon realizing the wonderful combination of bass and mandolin. Who in the recording industry has the balls to try that today?.

    • @jonwearing5992
      @jonwearing5992 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is exactly what I loved about this song's production, they used a treble booster on the bass and it blends so well with the mandolin, as you rightly say. I cannot be arsed with anything like chart or popular music, and haven't done for donkey's years. You can hear great music by superb musicians in many pubs and it doesn't cost the earth either. Great music is still to be heard, it just comes under the radar, that's all!.

    • @Nihilianth
      @Nihilianth ปีที่แล้ว

      Combined with what is considered a "bad" singing voice that gets by so well with Rod Stewart's emotional rawness.
      ALSO, very ballsy to write lyricical lines that really long with a lot of syllables that requires extremely careful planning to fit with the set beat. Very few people understand how technically difficult a song this was to write and flesh out. I'm always amazed at how they managed to pull it all together. It's gotta be at the top of the list of one of the all time greats, but is always overlooked.

    I was in my early 20s and dated a woman nearly twice my age, this song sums up my experience nicely and when I sing along, I usually say her name (which just so happens to fit into the song) instead of Maggie. Still quite cathardic despite it being almost a decade ago.

    Thanks for posting; Rod Stewart is one of my faves; this song was mentioned in the book 'The Lost Child' by author Mr. Caryl Phillips. Viewing in 2024.

    The spectacular music is that which can tell a story like this, in a masterful way, and live on and on through the generations.

    I love how this song describes a fairly specific situation in a way that feels relatable. Why am I so invested in this story? Why does it feel so personal when I've never experienced it? Lmao I love this song so much

    your right i listen to a lot of songs from the 70's 60's 80's and a few singers from todays time, i dont listen to rap or hip hop. People in class get irratated when i ask the teacher for a song because its an old song i ask for, we had a teacher in art class let us listen to music and she would let us ask. I'm 14 years old and am perfectly happy with who i listen to. The music is good and thats all i want.

    Oh Maggie! It's been sooo many years since we parted When I first heard this song at the time I really didn't equate it that much to our situation but still love the song. Now that the years have rolled on it seems to be more relevant and that it was your name is so ironic. .But as it says "I still loved you anyway"...and I guess I still do. So wherever you are Maggie, bonne chance, mon cheri.

      The wrong kind of love can be seriously damaging, especially to a young person.
      "Maggie May" was a cougar of the worst sort - using a young man to fill her empty life.
