Unless all speakers are at least B1-B2 English users, that would be more useful. I totally support this type of event, but at least we should do it Tetun for now allowing students to familiarize the debating system and that will train them the debating tactics both to argue and to overcome rebuttals, elloborate their points and apply logic (including language awareness) as these to avoid misleading conception, repetition, and fossilized discussion in which the points seemed to be stagnant not evolved.
As far as I have seen, the debaters don't really understand some concepts, i.e. curriculum and other related subject. Firstly, the event committee should identify the contestants' language proficiency level before determining the debating topics in accordance with their English level and cognitive level.

In my opinion, I think our government need to focus to the method of teaching, because sometimes most of teachers can dominate contain but they still have problems in their method of teaching. In the other part our government need to evaluate directly to the process of learning around Timor Leste in every 5 years

Here's the solution: banish Portuguese and and make English to replace it as your official language. Your young generation will have access to much wider ocean of knowledge hence they will have stronger position to compete in their future job. Do it before its too late and since your country just barely reach its 20s of being independent.
Seriously guys why Portuguese? Because they are 'nicer colonizer'? Jeez even Indonesian language is more useful for you than Portuguese since you are surrounded by Malay world sociogeographically, economically and culturally. I mean how often do you guys even doing bussiness with CPLP countries if not only for nostalgia purpose?
If you want to retain your pride by removing the remnant of 24 yrs of colonized by your much hated neighbor, just change the name of the language from Bahasa Indonesia to Bahasa Melayu or Malay Lingua or Habla Malay, it will still do.
