Nah Cantrell's playing makes the band more than Layne's voice. Cantell isn't just a guitar player either. He's also always been the primary songwriter and lyric writer as well as his contribution to the vocals.
thats all true, but those early albums Facelift. Dirt and 3 legged dog, would not have been half as good with a different vocalist. Lane brought a power and energy to the table that really is unmatched in todays music, I used to be in a AIC cover band playing all Cantrels leads/riffs, without a good vocalist, musically the songs were boring. our vocalist was good but he wasnt Lane didnt have the presence, I dont believe Alice in Chains would have been successful without him in the beginning,

He doesn't waste a note, his solos service the songs, his tone is magnificent, a brilliant rhythm player and he's as great of a riff lord as Tony Iommi imo. I do agree about how phenomenal of a vocalist Layne is. AIC wouldn't be where they were in the 90s without Layne, but they wouldn't be where they were without Jerry either. Jerry gives them a distinct sound. Layne is my #2 of all time behind Chris Cornell, but if Jerry had passed away instead of Layne, Alice In Chains would have ended altogether. There can be an AIC without Layne (not as great obviously), but there could never be AIC without Jerry.
