Its hard to overstate just how scenically beautiful Edinburgh is. Its a city built in and between great hills and dormant volcanos, and just walking around is fascinating, with all the roads and buildings crossing at different levels

Yeah as a local I feel very different. Edinburgh is a fantastic city and is a place everyone should visit at least once in their life. But living here I can't help but feel like a second class citizen in a lot of the city centre and when I don't, the area gets incredibly overcrowded. Its designed for people to come visit not for those who live here. We all tend to find our small pockets of Edinburgers and congregate there. It's a shame but I'm happy that people can come appreciate the areas we've been forced out of

Edinburgh has single-handedly had the biggest emotional impact on me of any city I’ve ever been to. I seriously think it is the most beautiful place on Earth. I had no expectations going in to my first trip and it blew me away, and I’m excited to get the opportunity to go back later this year!

I've been lucky enough to travel a lot when I was in college, and just before the pandemic, then travel more than ever (July 2022-July 2023, marks the first time in my life I've completed a round trip flight every month, and travelled internationally every fiscal quarter), and being in an expensive city now (Boston) has made me acutely aware of 3 things.
    1. Attache guides are pretty accurate even throughout time, occasionally there are some things that are time limited, but there usually an easy way to update the references that were time relevant
    2. Everything is simpler and easier now that apple pay is widely used, from Boston to DC, to London, Vienna, Nairobi and damn near everywhere in between, I haven't had to use an atm since 2019, and use cash maybe once or twice a year, usually only on "free" walking tours.
    3. Don't let the "expensive city" label determine if it'll actually be expensive to you. As mentioned, I live in Boston, While NYC, LA, and Miami may be the US cities that are known to be expensive, Boston is near as makes no difference NYC type pricing, but without most of the NYC benefits, so when I went to London (when the pound was worth about 1.10 USD) I saved so much money it was ridiculous.

We try to make the episodes as evergreen as possible. Things change but there's a reason we include/exclude certain data points. But thank you for the kind words!

Absolutely delightful video. With my best friend in London, I find myself there most often when visiting the UK - probably 6-7 times in the last decade +. In April 2022, I finally changed that by doing a quick 4 day side trip to Edinburgh and loved it. So this video brought back fond recent memories - thank you. If you go back soon, try Cafe St. Honoré. I enjoy their not fussy French inspired food using amazing Scottish products (and the chef-owner, Neil Forbes, seems a good guy). Agree completely with the train approach. Traveled the Caledonian Sleeper from Euston on the way up (which was one of those bucket list train trips I had been wanting to do, and glad I did), and the LNER Azuma direct service to Kings Cross on the return - which was also an absolutely lovely journey. Oh, Alex, I get the whole bagpipe thing - my Scots-Irish ancestors have been in America since the 1700s, but as soon as the pipes begin to play my eyes start “watering.”

This is an interesting primer for the uninitiated.
However, in terms of what the city has to offer, there is MUCH more than 'just' the Royal Mile and Princes Street. A few minutes either side of those one enters very different worlds. From the Old Town cross the Meadows and visit Bruntsfield, Morningside, the Grange and Marchmont - the first two with shops and eateries plus wonderful residential streets, the latter two being residential.
Or go down the New Town hill through blocks of fabulous Georgian architecture, cobbled streets and private gardens to Dean Village, Stockbridge (village with indie shops, eats etc.) and the Royal Botanic Gardens...all accessible via the Water of Leith, a small river that bisects the city.
Indeed, within minutes either side of the Royal Mile and Princes Street you will discover new and very different worlds that in their own way surpass the exceptionally touristy city centre.
BTW, this was a very enjoyable and well-produced video. As someone very familiar with the city - and a marketer - I appreciate the production values as well as the value of the content. Thank you.

I love Edinburgh. It's dramatic, magical and friendly and don't forget the dimensions of this city also go underground. Couple of things to add to the commentary though; parking is a nigtmare and expensive particularly if you get zapped by a very nasty breed of traffic warden. Also there is very good food to be had so don't put too much emphasis on pies and the like. As the video says fish here is almost always amazing

Interestingly, Scotland has recently been really leaning into the gin business. Thanks to the fact that there are all these distilleries and that gin uses similar equipment to whisky it has made Scotland a gin powerhouse with around three quarters of the UK's gin being produced in Scotland. Scotland is also home to three of the most popular gin brands in the world, including Gordon's. It is said that at this rate gin might become Scotland's new national drink!

As a born and bred Scot who lived in London for a long time I always thought that Scottish money was legal tender everywhere in the UK but I was shocked to eventually find out that...its not so black and white. The upshot is that English money is legal tender in Scotland but Scottish money actually isn't one hundred percent legal tender in England. It has to be taken by banks in England but actually it sits in a gray area where private business like shops are under no legal obligation to take it. They might, but more often than not they wont and they dont have to. Best to spend your cash before returning.

    • @drummerboy1390
      @drummerboy1390 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are correct about the bank notes, but it’s not as bad as it used to be. Maybe it’s not so noticeable nowadays because most people pay by card, but I spent a couple of days in Birmingham recently with a pocket full of Scottish twenty pound notes and only one of them was questioned when a young guy in a coffee shop took one to his boss, who nodded that it was OK. In the eighties and nineties, I would check if petrol stations in England would take Scottish notes before I filled up the tank. The smaller the shop, the more likely they were to refuse them. No problem with English bank notes in Scotland.

Great video, love Edinburgh. However Scottish bank notes are not legally acceptable in England and Wales. It's a long standing myth. Legal tender is a specific term and only means when a judge in an English and Welsh court orders payment and that the meaning is it must be payment by the English Pound. English, Welsh, and Northern Irish businesses are not obliged to accept Scottish notes. The Scottish note is a recognised currency in England etc, but then so is the Yen, and US Dollar. It does not follow that shops are legally obliged to accept payment by the Yen, The Dollar, The Euro, or The Scottish issued bank notes. It is merely a personal choice of businesses south of the Scottish border with zero legal compulsion. If McDonald's on Oxford Street London is happy to take the Japanese Yen as payment for a burger then they'll consider payment by the Scottish bank note, but it's a choice and not a legal requirement. Shops in England are perfectly entitled to refuse payment for goods if it's not the English Pound. Just like shops in New York don't have to legally accept the Mexican Peso for purchases. Famous and accesible money experts in the UK like Martin Lewis have done explanations on this topic.

@@attachetravel I suspect it's because Scottish notes are issued by commerical banks and not by a goverment central bank of which there is only one in the UK, ie The Bank Of England. Currency from The Channel Islands, although issued in pound sterling, also fall in the same category, and are not legally obliged to be accepted by businesses within the mainland of the UK.

Dear author of this video - the video gives a lot if useful informatoin about Edinburg and Scotland, but there is also so much self-protrayal, that to my mind it is not really a "travel guide" any more. Comment can also come from the off and does not need the author's face constantly in front of the camera.

It’s almost like the problems prevalent in London that you equate with Muslims is almost certainly a ‘London’ problem and not a religious or race issue.
