Heavier rod (9 or 10wt), full sinking line, and try a clouser minnow or similar fly. Add some split shot if you need to. The sinking line will help get your fly down and make it much easier to cast than a swim bait.

A stripping basket or something collapsible will help with line management

I like a 10wt. fast sinking line on an 8'0" rod. With 30lb. mono leader (24").
I rub herring smelly jelly on the hairs of the streamer. I like a streamer with a 6/0 hook, with a splitshot added just above the streamer on the leader, and let the line sink for 40 seconds.
(Count to ten 4 times). I use the reel to reel in the fish.

Yeah, definitely no need for a tapered leader and most of us surf guys just use straight flourocarbon like 20 lb, since salt
fish aren't leader shy like trout. Tapered leaders can be costly too. The cliff was to your right too which makes casting hard, seeing that your right handed. One of the techniques is backhad casting where your casting backwards and releasing on your backstroke toward the ocean. Check out vids here on youtube. Casting will take time, but at least your getting it out. Been wanting to try my flyrod for rockfish from my kayak! Could be hella fun!

    I dabble

    Anyways… cool videos 👍😎🤙

I’ve got some tips for ya dude. If you wanna get serious about fly fishing for rockfish get a 8-10wt rod, a redington predator would be a good start, and get a full sinking fly line and heavy clouser minnow flies, and for your leaders just use 6’ of straight fluorocarbon 🤙🏻 your local fly shop can help you get rigged up

    • @shredhead159

      20 pound fluorocarbon *

  • @tukijbird
    @tukijbird 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Maybe try a sinking line with a little shorter leader try like a 7ft 12lb floro tied to a shrimp fly with a split shot right by the hook 🤷‍♂️that’s what I would do. And then make sure you have enough line out to load your cast before sending it out. Hope this suggestion is of any help good luck Daniel!!!

Definitely want to see more of this sort of content. Pretty crazy to see rockfish on the fly, but refreshing. 8wt switch rod for stripers, that would be so much fun. Heck, your 6wt catching surfperch would be fun too!

i try not to false cast back & forth with the line when rock hopping flylining
i try to fling it forward out into the water,
just once on a strong 1-time hurl
    after it sinks 40 seconds
try stripping the line in slowly in short jerks between 8-second pauses
this let's the line & streamer sink again
a 10wt line with 30lb mono leader is nearly like small rope; you can use the line to haul the fish up out of the water up to you

Casting: You are windshield wiper casting. Which won't work and just gets worse. Accelerate to a hard stop. Try stopping the rod at straight up for the back cast. Wait for the line to straighten out behind you in the air, then bring the rod forward accelerating to a hard stop at just above the 3o'clock position. Start with around 4 rod lengths of line, then work outwards from there.
Line: Stay with the floating line until you get better at casting.
Leader: Tapered is slightly easier to cast. Add 1 to 2 feet of tippet to save the leader. Blood knot or 3xbox surgeon's knot.
Flies: Casting those lures is only going to mess you up casting wise. Contact me and I'll send you a dozen files that will work for rockfish.
Lastly I should say that while I have caught over 100 rockfish, I still have not landed a Ling on the fly.

That climb tho, you weren’t kidding about that scary looking camera angle.
I’m terrified of falling off the rocks as I go solo fish, so I slap an appropriate number of rod holders on my backpack. That way you can use both hands and the added weight is negligible.
Also an easy fix for the slow sink line/swim bait is either using a nice size split shot or they do make weighted EWG hooks as well.
Be well, stay safe, tight lines and stay cool man. 😁🤙🏼🍺🎣🙏🏼

  • @MrAcuta73
    @MrAcuta73 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Buy a fast-sink shooting head with running line, just run some heavy mono instead of a tippet, and some streamer flies. Casting a swimbait on a fly rod seems...odd, but doable. Flopping big bunny leaches for big trout isn't really "fly fishing" either, and I've done that. A 7/8 rod or even an 8/9 rod would probably be a better choice...but use what ya got.
    Looked like fun regardless!
Edit: For the line issue? Google "Stripping basket"....something you can buy or improvise.

Practice practice practice on your casting! It gets easier and easier! Starting out on expert insane terrain difficulty level 10 of 10 is bold. Send it all the way the fist time! Everything after that will seem easy peasy! The more weight on your line the harder it is casting at first! Remember, even a little bit of weight sinks. You only have to wait longer for it to get to the bottom where you were looking for your fish. Line type, leader, and fly line for sinking baits will help lot there. Get your rythem with your casting in an open field with a fly only. You will be amazed at how much you will build a kind of cadence as the cast gets longer and longer. Awesome to see this. Impresive and great approach to trying new ways of fishing! Thank you!

Sinking line or a sink tip line will help a lot. Also using a tippet at the end of the tapered leader will extend the use of the tapered leader - due to re-tying. Alternatively you can make your own tapered leader by tying your own - i.e. 30 to 20 to 10lb fluoro

Ultimately fish however you want that brings you enjoyment. If it makes you happy do it. Me I prefer to use the best tool for the job. There is a reason why you don’t see people use fly gear for rock fishing, it isn’t very efficient. Just because it will work doesn’t make it the most effective way to do it. If you are providing entertainment then you can use bluegill fishing rig to go for rock fish and that would be entertaining to watch. But as a recreational angler I prefer to use a heavier spinning or bait casting setup.
Thanks Daniel for doing what you do. 👍
