    2010 Gothic
O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
    Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
When our land is illumined with Liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strike a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that dares to defile
The flag of her stars and the page of her story!
By the millions unchained, who our birthright have gained,
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

You might not believe it. I am from China. When I was serving in the military, the very first duty I was assigned to was to sing this song coz there happened to be an USAF delegation in our unit, it was also because I speak English. With less than a week to go before the 4th July, it did take me a lot of time to learn this song, not only just memorizing the lyrics, but also fathoming the emotions, historical backgrounds and sentiments coming along with it.
On that day of performance, although nervous, but I finally did it, and I would never forget the warm applauses and whistles from the delegation. The delegation commander was Wg Cdr Miller, who was a very kind gentleman and absolutely an amazing friend to make. He said he was glad that we met each other like this as friends. I said, of course, deep down we are all human beings and I never hope that one day we end up meeting each other on the battlefield.

Bases on my personal experience by staying with the foreign forces, I would say that the Chinese army is way too serious sometimes (although the Chinese army has been much more open than before), while western forces are more lively, I mean the atmosphere and characters, but that doesn't make them any less of professionalism and excellence.

I agree with your last statement and hope we never have the war so many claim is “inevitable”. I say that is an admission of failure of leadership. All wars are failures of leadership. But what I want to know is…was the version you learned and sang the version in this video? I will be posting in a moment a rebuttal to tis video as it omits one verse and substitutes one written decades later by Oliver Wendell Holmes, who I believe I am related to.

On September 13th, 2001, Queen Elizabeth II suggested to the Royal Guards that they should play this Anthem after the tragic events that took place 2 days prior. And so they did. QE II broke a 400 year old tradition on that day. It was the first time a nation’s anthem had been played out of its own.

For reference, this was about the war of 1812. During this, British attempted to take over Fort Mchenry to be able to dock and support their troops in Baltimore. If this happened, Britain would surely have won the war and ceased Baltimore and eventually all of America.
They brought an armada of ships and warned the American soldiers that they would begin a mass assault on the fort, killing everyone inside unless they lowered the flag in the middle of the fort indicating they have surrendered. The American soldiers refused and stated they’d rather die. The shelling began, relentlessly bombarding the fort, an American named Francis Scott Key was aboard the ship as a nagoriator at the time, watching the pitch black fort, seeing the flag still waving whenever a shell exploded, illuminating the sky. Finally the British had enough of it and decided to take that flag down themselves. They fired all they repeatedly bombarded that flag mercilessly, yet somehow the flag remained up. In the morning when the shelling stopped, they stared in awe as that flag still remained. The soldiers of the fort refused to let that flag topple, holding it up themselves, even if it cost them their lives. The entire armada gave up, low on materials, knowing their attack was hopeless. Without their extra forces, their attack on Baltimore failed, and the US once again, escaped from Britain’s rule.
    Edit: fixed a typo.

The US spanned the entire Atlantic coast. Taking Baltimore was not going to "cease America". The war wasn't even about the states which were part of the country, it was about Midwest territory. Americans are so mythological about our history.

    • @user-lh1hd8ss9i
      @user-lh1hd8ss9i 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

The situation in the country was such that a defeat in Baltimore might just have ended the United States as some were already calling for us to ask the British for peace terms. These people were in the minority but the situation was far worst them many know. The anger of the British over our declaring war on them just when they thought that Napoleon's impending defeat would bring about the end of war was pure fury at our "stabbing them in the back" and produced a determined unified resolve to destroy or at least weaken/humble the United States, take us back into their empire by force and to do with us what they did to India after crushing the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857! So if they had won, ALL of the country would have been affected and whether or not the cause of the war had been over the Midwest Territory, Impressment and right of the seas, etc would have been meaningless. We didn't even begin to earn our way back into their respect until we entered WWI in April 1917 and when we entered WWII in December 1941that completed our regaining their respect! That is the truth, not a myth!@@UnconventionalReasoning

It's written so well, I just read the lyrics from the whole song and feeling patriotic...and have to remind myself I'm French and has very little to do with my culture 😂...then my name is Francis. Common! I doubt my parents named me after the writer of the song but... I love to think they did! From my experience, I think Americans are in general the biggest hearted and most well mannered people I've ever met. Maybe american revolution, but you must admit it was british who made USA in some way. It was British who founded american states, colonial states on eastern shores. and so on. and what language do you speak? English. why english? Becouse, in the begining, British people were the majority in north american colonies. and those british people became americans.... US is a part of British heritage. At the begining, at least. But all that followed had stood on British foundaments..... Your spreading all the way to Pacific was not that astonishing. It was savageous with plenty of crimes and genocides.... yyour civil war.... Oh hypocrital anti-slavery against slavery... Let's go further. WW 1 and WW2....No. nothing astonishing. Americans made Hitler....And after WW2 all your history is something you shoud be ashamed of

The anthem is amazing because men knew that the British would bombard that very spot which held the flag and did it believing in a better country. The verse which is sung in this version here was written long after Key's death. Written by Oliver Wendell Holmes. Yes, you're talking about this inserted revisionist verse which was penned by a person who had barely turned 5 years old when Key wrote the original words.

*_Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution._*
*_No refuge could save the hireling and slave_*
*_From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave_*

History of the song: This song was written during the War of 1812, a war where France n America (which was had 64% less land then today) were going to war against The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In 1814, France Scott Key was on a British Vessel gazing over the Baltimore Fort and saw our Flag, and since that place had been bombarded by UK, he wrote that song the next day to show we have power. A few months later, December 14th, 1814, In Ghent, Belgium, the "Treaty of Ghent" is signed, signifying America's victory and the United Kingdom's defeat. 1931, its the national anthem.

Then again, it makes sense. The other verses had hints at slavery, and anti-brit lines. The British, at the time of the Star Spangled Banner’s adoption as the anthem, were allies of America, and so those verses had to be cut. We should definitely learn the other verses, but not destroy our relations with Britain because of a past grudge.

As much as we hear this song, we don't actually realize how well thought out the whole song is. It really undermines the whole meaning of the song to just sing the first verse. Why you end with "Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave oer the land of the free and the home of the brave?" why just end with a question? Does the banner wave oer the land of the free and the home of the brave? YES IT DOES! We as people don't really interpret that last phrase of the first verse as a question, but it is. Now knowing the whole song, I do say that star spangled banner does wave oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!!! We are soo blessed to live in America, yet sadly most people these days just complain about everything bad about it. If you are one of those people, do you really think that YOU live in the land of the free and the home of the brave? If you want America to be something better than what it is, do you really care about all the people that died to keep the land of the free free? The home of the brave brave? If not get the fuck out of this country and learn just how great America actually is. God bless the USA.

They could make a little history movie, reinforcing how deep and beautiful is this Anthem. A Anthem Video. Fifth original verse for those who do not know it. This was Key's original, most modern versions have Holmes' abolitionist verse. It is as follows:
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave,
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
