It's funny seeing people complain about the Cal 1003 being modelled after an old ETA/Unitas movement. Manufacturing movements based on expired ETA patents is literally the entire business model of Selitta and STP. People drop $2000+ on a watch with an unfinished Selitta SW-200, which is a clone of an ETA 2824, and is only 60% made in Switzerland, but scoff at the Cal 1003, which is 95% manufactured in the US using high grade aircraft materials. In addition, Weiss manufactures their cases and dials as well, and this one has a titanium case. Weiss made a terrific watch, and the materials and development alone justify the price. I'm proud of what he's done. Great video, Rob!
When you said $2800 I nearly choked on me cocoa. But that 60-second hack function is a great value-added feature, and the stainless steel version is around half the price of the titanium model. I might have found a new grail...."Made in USA" would look great at the 6 o'clock too, and I'm English myself! Thanks for this, Rob. You and yours stay well, and all here too!
The price point is crazy, check any Longines or Horage or a thousand brands with a better quality/price relation. Beside is made in America, which is a minus.
You can just pull the crown out on a normal hacking movement when the hand gets to 60 and achieve the same result with the same effort. That doesn't impress me at all and definitely doesn't add any value to the price in my opinion. This watch, titanium and aluminum or not, should be atleast a thousand less than it is. I'm not paying a huge premium for a modified ETA movement just because you used aluminum and made it in the USA.
@@spencerseitz6414 are you dumb, or did you just learn about watches yesterday? It's 100% a modified ETA 7001 and 6498. Patek and AP even use modified movements, it's common practice. Weiss is a microbrand, they can not afford the $5million+ that it costs to create an in-house movement from the ground up and they don't have the economies of scale to benefit from. Do a tiny bit of research into watches and movements if this is something you're interested in.
I went for the 38mm with latte dial and seconds subdial at 6 o clock. It's based off the ETA 7001 and non hacking. One of my favorite watches. He does a great job on these!
Funnily enough, I got a hankering for a hand-wind watch and ordered one from Ali just last night. $80 or so is dirt cheap to scratch a new itch. I loved the Weiss 38mm, so maybe one day.
That looks like an awesome watch Rob - I love your enthusiasm. I would love to learn more about the stainless steel version. I hope you can get one of these watches 😊👍
Now this is the Weiss to get! A titanium watch that's truly ultra light is very cool and when you showed that hacking feature........I damn near collapsed. Such a perfect feature.
@@RandomRobReviews would you happen to know off the top of your head if the 38mm ones have the hacking feature as well? Can't find any mention of it on their site. (Still amazed that that feature made it on to a relatively affordable watch)
I also have a Weiss Watch, it is the Field Watch White, assembled April 1, 2016. My watch is one of the earlier ones Cameron Weiss made with the ETA 6497-1 Calibre. I am very satisfied with this watch.
Finally, Weiss watch review! I own a 38mm manual wind and love it. If you can review more of his watches in the near future, that would be awesome! Thanks Rob!
I was unfamiliar with this brand until this video. Awesome looking watch. Has a Stowa deck watch look to it. Very cool. LOVE that small seconds hacking function!
Thank you for the great review, Rob. Beautiful watch, especially the movement. D. Dornbluth and sohn has, or at least did have an option called Quattro Arrest, that stopped at the nearest 15 seconds. This, obviously, is even better. Well done!
Great review and that 60 second hack is a “killer”. Unfortunately the price for me is a problem but a fabulous watch all the same. Weiss has been on my radar for some time perhaps the steel 42 in the future.
Great video! Yes, 95% of the movement is (in this watch) made in LA by Weiss. It is an in-house movement. The only thing Weiss doesn’t claim to make (in this movement) is the jewels and mainspring. Yes, it is a reversed engineered or clone-of-sorts of the ETA/Unitas 6497. So what? Every movement shares from another before it. Cameron clearly put his own stink on it too. Add that plus the unique materials, rarity, boutique feel, and supporting a US watch brand, and $2800 seems not so unreasonable to me. ✌️
Insane value for money from a master watchmaker. Most other brands in-house movements do not make their mainsprings or jewels as well so you essentially lose out on nothing. This is a true collectors brand/watch. Maybe my next watch but I just got an Seamaster so prob won’t be for a little bit
The “hacking at 60” feature was a very pleasant surprise. I don’t obsess with hacking mainly because it’s a drag but this feature makes it so much easier.
Absolutely stunning movement and really well -done dial. Wish they would offer a three hander with a Seiko movement for a bit less because that dial is near perfect.
That’s a cool watch, Rob. I’ve also been thinking about the Weiss brand. I might go for the stainless steel because of the $$$ but regardless Cameron Weiss makes cool watches.
That is a really beautiful time piece. We used to purchase pressure gauges for hydronic piping systems. They had Weiss on the face of the gauges. I wonder if this is the same company.
Rob, this watch is gorgeous IMO. I'm really wanting it, however with a wrist on the smaller size I worry it may be too big, my 6 3/4 inch wrist may be dwarfed by it... But man I do want it for the "Made in USA" and that hacking feature while only being on the 1003 is killer!
Wow, I love that hacking feature! Does the 42mm Standard Issue Field Watch in stainless steel (non-limited edition) also have this feature? Or only the titanium piece?
Love the watch, but how long are they gonna be around for when it’s time for an overhaul? Parts down the road? Definitely a good price point for what you get, but would want it to be serviceable in 10, 15 years.
Thinkin more and more about this brand! Might have to look out for when Camron does a stainless caliber 1003 release again tho. I’m in the camp that likes a little heft to my watch.
That Hacking Feature, where the Seconds Hand Stops @ the "60" (as It's on a 2nd dial) or on a Sweeping Seconds Hand (on a 3 handed Dial) Stopping @ 12 (or 00 hours) is something I recall seeing on a Friend's 'A-11'. A Government issued (G.I.) WW II "Air Force" Watch. I also recall; that in a scene of the Iconic WWII movie, " A Walk in the Sun" - The Lead played by Dana Andrews, has all the Men under His command "sync: their watches, before They "rush" a German -held Farm House, surrounded by an Open Field & expected Deadly Machine Gun Fire. So Timely was critical ! In the scene; They show One on the Watches, as He calls out, "Hack". That's when the Sweeping Seconds Hand - SNAPS to the 12. (Exactly the Same Action; as a "chrono" Sweeping Hand on a Mechanical Chronograph - once It's Reset / Except the Sweep Hand is moving, as the now "sync-ed" Watch is Keeping Time - All activated by the Crown) Too Bad It's Not the norm on more watches - Especially, Military - Themed Watches.
Its a beautiful watch - nice design elements, materials and color. That hacking feature is sweet. Sadly, the only downside is the price is a bit too steep, even considering all the positives. Especially for a newly established micro brand :(
For all those wanting this beautiful rare piece, I have one available FOR SALE. Mint condition piece. Only reason I am getting rid of it is because it is SO light. Did not know I enjoyed weight on my wrist until I got this. Beautiful, gorgeous piece of art.... just too light for me.
Hey Rob! Awesome video! I've been a huge fan of yours for a while and decided to try my hand at starting a watch TH-cam channel. It would mean a lot to me if you could check it out! Keep up the awesome work, man! I can't wait to see you get one in as a "keeper" ahah!
To say Swiss made I think 60% of the value needs to be made in Switzerland. I maybe off a little but I think I'm close. What is the Made in the USA rule? It is ridiculous to me that Weiss cannot put made in usa on the dial. I'm thinking about a white dial steel version for patriotic reasons.
Think is not clear. So Weiss is doing about 95% (should be plenty I think) but government states “most or all” to label made in USA. Cameron is wise to just not put it on and deal with the requirement.
The movement in this (cal1003) does qualify for made in the USA. The movement has it printed on it. It just isn’t printed on the dial. The other models do not qualify for Made in the USA (cal1001)
He does a nice job the kid who makes these but I’m almost certain that the movement is the exact movement in the Uboat Flightdeck 5486. Look for yourself if you get a chance. But the piece is definitely cool and I love the black coating on the movement. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that.
To create the movement holder parts out of aluminum is not the best choice for longevity and future serviceability. And the RRP is starting to compete with some serious watch brands. You have to be a patriot to put your money into this.
It looks nice, but I miss the date function. I think it's not helpful to market a modified ETA movement as their own design. I know that Breitling and Panerai like to do this naming game also, but I don't think it's a good practice.
Date function is important for me as well, but it's a really nice watch, I must say the Winfield I got earlier this year is also a great watch, I love it (especially the lume). I have a couple of manual Russian watches which I rotate with so my wife wouldn't be on board with one of these I suspect.
Stainless steel version is only 1,100 dollars is a bargain. No, Parnis with Seagull st36 movement Is a bargain at $70. 58 hours power reserve. No hacking needed mine is dead accurate +5 seconds a week
