This is a seriously great video. I appreciate your breakdown and it gives me much to consider. The movements of each technique [Siu Nim Tao especially] are like letters of the alphabet. But to communicate we must understand how the techniques fit together AND realize there must be "ideas" or mindful control to form a "sentence" [therefore imparting PURPOSE]. Otherwise we're just gesticulating and scribbling in a nonsensical fashion. I usually call the Fook Sao the "Subduing" hand as well, for it contains a subduing energy. Great video and translation. I think the titles should describe the "idea" and energy [intention] of each movement. In Wing Chun we fight with the mind, letting the movement result. It is a different way of thinking than most other martial arts. The Chinese way of thought informs concept. Too many now rely on "science" and bio-mechanics, measuring angles with a protractor. This is less useful and effective than using our minds with intention and allowing movement to flow, for each of us are unique. Thank you again.

I was taught the names (and concepts) by my Si-Fu, who is German, who learned them from his German Sifu who learned them from his Chinese Sifu. I'm guessing you will agree that Chinese native speaker (of Cantonese) is rarely going to take the time correct the pronunciation of a Gwailo, because let's face it, we're not going to get it right in any case.

Great video very informative ☺ I found this after watching the grandmaster, was interested in what the hung gar fighter said about wing chun having 3 hands spade, pin, and sheath. U mentioned the phrase he uses in the film and I'm interested to know what is meant by spade, pin, and sheath.
To be clear, I was given the task by the director of 'translating' the names of those hands, so I am the one who chose these words, based on the mechanical/logical order of the style and on the utilitarian nature of the English words, specifically for farming implementation. So these choices were NOT based on any historical information. That said, I wanted to use words that had immediate and tactile concepts that anyone can grasp: A spade is a flat blade typically used for digging, but can be used to tamp and shield. The vectoring of putting forward the tansuw would also be familiar to anyone using a spade, where you must thrust at an optimal angle. A pin does not immediately seem to represent bongsuw, however, bongsuw is the strongest, most efficient coverage that we have. It anchors the kwunsuw. Furthermore, the usage of the bongsuw is to pressure into the opponent in such a manner that they must keep their hands in front as a defense or else risk being struck, a la chisuw. This, in effect, 'pins' the opponent's hands. The usage of the fooksuw is really about control and indeed 'sheathes' whatever it is trying to control. Hope this helps.
