Hi, Katie! I was wondering, if you could do a short video naming and explaining different variations/parts of a ballet performance? For example what is grand pas classique, coda, pas detrois etc.?
It would be a quite long and hard to understand video... Easiest parts are understanding "pas" meaning a piece of choreography and then the numbers "deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six", etc. meaning how many dancers are in the piece. Entrée meaning the entrance, adagio meaning the slow dance, allegro being the faster dances and coda being the ending part of something (as in music). But then again you need to know about white act, romanticism, classicism, what's a scene, what's an action, why pas d'action, and a huge lot of more information. You would have to study everything from 1500 to at least 1925 (if you wanna talk about classical ballet).
I can do second turns all day long but I can't for the life of me consistently do multiples. So thank you for this video. I've got my dance team assessment coming up so this is perfect timing!! I've also just started pointe 😊😊
Yesterday I did 5 double pirouettes, was SO happy. But now I literally just cannot get around for some reason. I'm trying to recall what I did differently yesterday but I remember anything :(. When I go too fast I lose balance, and when I go slow I can't get around. I keep telling my brain positive things but it just doesn't work. I'm devastated right now as yesterday they seemed so easy.
try inhaling when you turn and exhale on the prep. also, instead of saying “1, 2, 3”, try counting “AND, 1,2” so it tricks your brain into thinking you’re doing less when you’re doing more
I literally dislocated my knee falling out of a pirouette a few weeks ago, so the fear factor is pretty high right now. Hopefully will be up to trying this soon.
That tip about counting backwards is so simple hit so incredibly helpful, I can’t believe I never thought of doing that before. Same with thinking of your shoulder going back instead of the opposite one going around.
I watched this video about a month ago and my pirouettes have improved so much, thank you! I only learn and perform dance in theatre so my form was really bad before. Thanks again!
Great instruction! Some of the best tips I have gotten on male ballet technique have come from ballerinas! Traditionally, men are usually expected to do more turns than women.
So helpful thanks. Doing an exam on Friday that specifies double in the centre practice and on de dons and I've been struggling mentally and physically with doubles for as long as I can remember. I'm not a natural turner at all! The shoulder thing is really helpful. Thanks so much! X
This video helped me so much!! Whenever I did a pirouette I always fell out of it before I got to a double and the shoulder tip completely changed that
Katie :) i'm a male dancer :) i'm from Mexico and i would love if you could post a barre workout for jumps and petit allegro :) i have learned a lot watching your videos :D you're the best Katie thanks for everything
Kathryn Morgan OMG ! :D katie i can't belive you answered me ;D i'm so happy and thanks for being so kind with your viewers :D you are the best ballet blogger that i've known :D love from Mexico :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I used to be horrible at even doing one turn, but now this taught me to do a double. Now I'm working on a tripple. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!
Thank you so much!! note to self: 1. use shoulders (same side back) - key to multiple pirouettes 2. use spot. don't tense up neck. focus on a spot each turn 3. count backwards. 3, 2, 1 Just go for it! The worst thing that can happen is the turn won't work. Get out of your head.
Thank you so much for being helpful and supportive to people who are taking ballet classes and trying to built their technique and improve their skills. Wish you good luck with everything you do!
Two tricks that helped me with double pirouettes: 1) I used to have trouble keeping my spot for the second pirouette. My teacher would hold up fingers and as I was turning I had to shout out how many fingers she was holding up. She would change the number in between. It meant I really had to look at the spot. 2) Hold a small piece of paper in your turning hand (the outside hand) and by the end of the pirouette it has to be in your inside hand. This really helped me with fixing my arms and getting around faster.
Omg this helped so much , I have my double right but I was struggling for my single left, and to be on my team I have to have both doubles so now doing this video I have a clean single left so I will keep practicing thank you so much!
I've been waiting for a video like this - thank you! Can't wait to try the shoulder suggestions. I'm a guy who struggled with pirouettes for years and I'm just now getting some consistency in my single turns. So far the best tip that has worked for me has been focusing on the toe/knee/hip/shoulder alignment and thinking of it as a vertical turning axis.
I really have to work on my fear of falling...😯 I really struggle with my arms, they are very long and it's so hard to build stability while turning, do you have any advice for me? amazing video as always! 💟
I would really use your back. I had long uncontrollable arms as well, but once I focused on using my back instead (even in turns) I was able to stabilize. So when you turn, focus on being really strong through your entire back and core. That should help!
I’ve been holding myself back for a while after I did a turn and twisted my ankle. I’ve finally got over my mind stump and I’m back doing triples again because of this. Thanks
You are such a good person for real, you are so sweet and kind..thank you so much for all the tutorials, this is like my dream come true because since i was a little kid i wanted to be in ballet but my parents couldnt put me..so i really appreciate all the time that you spend making this videos for us, thank so so much for making my dreams come true💜💜💜
This is the best I've seen, for me at least. I do mostly basic ballet at home for myself. It has really improved my ice skating too. I can do a credible balance, so I'd like to try to master 2 turns. I harbor no illusions, however I'm a senior.
Thank u for this video. I didn’t even realise the shoulder thing before cuz my teacher didn’t teach it, but now my single turns are looking much better, i’m excited to get to multiple turns !
Dear Kathryn , Your videos have helped me so much this year and I thank you for that. I had trouble doing turns at pointe but this video really helped!!
Caitlin Weber good on you for being yourself and figuring out who you are! Umm i can't help you really but (if you are comfortable) maybe talk to your teacher? And figure something out? Sorry I can't help but I wish you well and hope you figure it out! :D
Don't worry too much. You're only twelve years old, probably just started puberty, the hormones are all over the place... that can be very confusing. It's normal to question your gender and sexual orientation at that age. That doesn't mean you're transgender. You could be, sure, but it's very unlikely since less than 1% of the population actually are transgender. Personally, I would just wait a few month and see if anything changes. Don't try to be a girl, don't try to be a boy. Just do and wear what you feel like doing and wearing at the moment. Think about if it's really worth it though, if you really want it that bad, for example cutting your hair. Is it that important to you that you're willing to accept the consequences, e.g. your ballet teacher getting mad at you for cutting your hair really short..? You're the only one who knows what's right for you at the moment. I personally don't think you have to cut your hair. Lots of boys and men have long hair, lots of girls and women have short hair, so your hair style doesn't define your gender. It's your decision though. If you still feel like you may actually be a boy inside after a few months and everyone seeing you as a girl really bothers you, talk to your doctor. He can refer you to a doctor or therapist who specializes in the treatment of gender identity disorder and gender dysphoria. It might take some time, but eventually you will figure everything out, so don't freak out now. What you're experiencing right now is absolutely normal for your age. In most cases those feelings go away after a short period of time, only in less than 1% of the cases those feelings will stay the same or even intensify. When I was thirteen I was absolutely, 100%, sure that I'm homosexual. Now I'm in my mid-20s and I've been in a relationship with a man for over six years now. I still like girls, but I also like boys (although I didn't realize that until I had my first crush on a boy when I was 15), so I'm bisexual. I know that now and I also know that you can't be 100% sure that your feelings about gender and sexual orientation won't change when you're still going through puberty. Puberty is the time where you experiment and slowly figure out who you really are. It's confusing and not being sure about anything can be very annoying, but finding yourself can also be fun :)
Caitlin Weber you need to know that there will always be someone who won't accept you, and learn that they don't matter, as long as you're happy with who you are. I've known I was a lesbian for 3 years or so, and I've learnt that my happiness is more important than my fear, but my girlfriend hasn't yet, and is worried about what other people would think, so we have to keep it secret. Just remember that it will get better, and you will understand with time. Don't jump to conclusions, and learn to be proud of yourself for who you are, when you're sure.
Caitlin - I agree with what the others are saying. Just be yourself! I KNOW it can be difficult but try not to worry about everyone else. Take your time in figuring this out - you are still young! In class, focus on improving your technique. It's the same for either male or female dancers - they need to have strong technique. So focus on that, and just be yourself. The rest will definitely come! Just don't forget why you love ballet in the first place!
Hi, and thank you! This is a big help coz I have an audition today and doubles are tricky for me... Some girls have them down pat and are doing fouettés at the age of 10! I needed some tips coz people have told me “go onto Demi point”, “turn into the floor” and sometimes even “that was interesting”. Sometimes I’ve fallen to the ground but I really needed help so thank you so much!!
Your tips are always so helpful! When I have a bad turning day where I fall out of my turns all the time, I think about my opposite shoulder bringing me around and it almost always works :) 👍
Super video. I love all your videos. They are so informative and inspirational. Your advice is sound - coming from such a highly trained and accomplished dancer. Thank you for taking the trouble to produce these excellent videos and for posting them on You Tube. Hope there will be many more to come. I'm a great admirer of yours. With best wishes from Sri Lanka.
Hi Kathryn! Thank you so much for your video! I couldn't do a double pirouette at ALL yesterday, and then after watching your video today and following your tips I was able to do a double:) More than once!!! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm having so much trouble with double pirouettes. We've been doing them for 2 years now and I still don't seem to be able to do 2 without falling out of landing badly. I'll try your tips and I'm sure they'll help a lot!
I haven't been to dance class... But ive been teaching myself to dance my whole life with contortions... I love to move my legs around alot and do balle, so I thought I would use a tutorial video on how to do dance moves... I realise it takes more than a day to start your piroette, and I just started 20 minutes ago... Any tips for new beginners : dancing is life :))
Great video Kathryn, could you please emphasize bit more on shoulders part, how to maintain them to be precise? Because for most dancers theory stops exactly where the turn begins. To make it simple - what exercises you'd recommend to make the shoulders thing a habit?
Hi Katie! Can you do a ballet glossary video? For both easy steps and also harder more advanced steps? You know, telling us the names of the steps and the differences between different pirouettes, jumps etc. I'm 21 and I "discovered" ballet at 16 and started taking classes at 18. I've learned so much over the past years but there so much left to learn and I thought learning this is a good foundation. It's fun to think that I at 16 didn't even know what a releve was and now I was like "what's a lame duck?" and when you showed it was like "oh yeah, that one". I love your videos and I always learn so much! :)
This year I am working really hard to get a clean pirouette and start on my doubles! My instructor thinks I'll be ready for pointe in a year so I am going to work really hard on my turns and clean placement
I think I finally just mastered my single, now time to start getting to work on doubles! I know this video is from a while ago but it really helped me!
Omg I never thought about my shoulders but this makes so much sense. I always try to somehow get myself round just with the arms and ankles, and leave my shoulders behind!
This video was made for me. Some days I do consistent doubles and other days I'm struggling to get a clean single😂😂
Hadassah Same
Omg this is me 😂😂
Me 2
SOO RELATABLE
Same!!
anyone else find it impossible to select a spot on a featureless wall
Yes. haha very hard
I think it's still easier than finding one in the mirror, way too many distractions
Rita Wing totes I've done that and tried to spot a person bc thats really all I can see then they move and I'm like DANG IT!!😂😂soo true
Rita Wing Me....
try to find a crack in the wall
I can do single pirouettes all day but I can’t do doubles for the life of me. I can do a sloppy double on my right side en de das like once a day.
Same
Omg I’m in level 4 and I can’t even do 2 pirouettes
Clorox Bleach I could do nice doubles but very inconsistent triples
Don’t worry just continue working on it this video helped me get a triple
Same
I honestly wish you were my dance teacher
Thank you!

Me too
same!!

thank you for the tips! my teacher says "stop doing your pirouette faces" meaning we're terrified of them lol 😂😂😂
Yes! haha I can understand that.
Does anybody else think that she should have like 10 million subscribers??!! You are seriously AMAZING !!!!!!!
Alexa Dollar ikr!!!😍😍
Alexa Dollar Agreed
Awww thank you!
+Kathryn Morgan I only do good doubles or triples well no one is watching.
She deserves them
I can do second turns all day long but I can't for the life of

Thank you so much!
Absolutely love the 3..2..1 trick! Also new video idea: Your breakout role in NYCB Romeo and Juliet Commentary!!!
Thank you! And yes- definitely R & J! I just need to make sure I can actually post it. But I will work on it!
That tip to push your shoulder back helped me so much thank you!
Great Tutorial..Thanks for making this video Kathyrn.
I watched this video about a month ago and my pirouettes have improved so much, thank you! I only learn and perform dance in theatre so my form was really bad before. Thanks again!
I couldnt get my double for Idk how long, but literally the first time I did the 3,2,1 thing I got it!!
Just after ballet class, i saw this! Like having a gift haha. 11:15pm here. Best video (makes me try to do multiples) before going to bed hahaha
I'm so glad! Thank you!
My goal is to do 2 turns but I want to do five, but I can only do one😧
Same! I try to do one, but my feet wont just let me do two and I end up only doing one. My feet are really annoying 😥
You're videos are so pure and real!!! No BS tutorials, real tips!
Great instruction! Some of the best tips I have gotten on male ballet technique have come from ballerinas! Traditionally, men are usually expected to do more turns than women.
Thank goodness! A gift for those of us going to summer intensives!!
I'm so glad! xoxo
Clara Euale yeah mine start on Monday and I’m in all advance and it’s kinda scary
“1...2...goodbye”
This sounds so funny
Here's a tip, the slower you push off, the more likely you are to get more pirouettes
cinder elias use more power, just push off slower
Wdym how?
Juwana Mguni I just did 1 and and a half! (The most i got bit not alot
I can attest to this last week I did that and did 6 en pointe
@cinder elias relax, don't force yourself to spin, if you use to much force you will end up falling
Thank you for this video ive always struggled to do pirouettes on me left side. This bideo definitely helped me
You are legit the only person who I understand in ballet as a teacher omg
So helpful thanks. Doing an exam on Friday that specifies double in the centre practice and on de dons and I've been struggling mentally and physically with doubles for as long as I can remember. I'm not a natural turner at all! The shoulder thing is really helpful. Thanks so much! X
I tried the first tip and it instantly made it so much easier and better 😂. Thanks ❤️
This video helped me so much!! Whenever I did a pirouette I always fell out of it before I got to a double and the shoulder tip completely changed that
Wow! This really helped. I went from barely being able to do a clean single to a perfect double and sometimes even a triple! Thankyou
Thank you so much! First try with the shoulder trick I got 1 1/2 for the first time!!!!
Katie :) i'm a male dancer :) i'm from Mexico and i would love if you could post a barre workout for jumps and petit allegro :) i have learned a lot watching your videos :D you're the best Katie thanks for everything
Hi Diego! I love having male dancer viewers! Thank you! Yes- will definitely do a barre/center for jumps. Thank you for the suggestion! xoxo
Kathryn Morgan OMG ! :D katie i can't belive you answered me ;D i'm so happy and thanks for being so kind with your viewers :D you are the best ballet blogger that i've known :D love from Mexico :)
Your post name is literally jetè!! Haha... Well... It's nice to know that male dancers watch female dancers as well
..
counting backwards is a brilliant idea!!! thanks so much for great ideas and i hope i can improve my pirouettes after this!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I used to be horrible at even doing one turn, but now this taught me to do a double. Now I'm working on a tripple. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!
I followed your tips and just got a clean 1 1/2 on my left for the first time ever. I’m gonna come back to this everyday and keep working
Who on *Earth* would thumbs-down this helpful video! 😘
Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤️
I can’t believe I never thought about the psychological side of ballet, this video has been really helpful! Thank you so much 😊
I’m a hip hop dancer but I really wanted to learn this and I love it 😻
Thank you so much!!
note to self:
1. use shoulders (same side back) - key to multiple pirouettes
2. use spot. don't tense up neck. focus on a spot each turn
3. count backwards. 3, 2, 1
Just go for it! The worst thing that can happen is the turn won't work. Get out of your head.

Aww thank you!
Thank you so much!!!! Lately in class I've been counting down while turning and I've been able to do way more turns!
Amazing! God bless you all and your whole family
that shoulder tip...big pro tip. THANK YOU!
You are the best you really explained it.
I was watching loads of other videos and your the best out of all of them!
Thanks
Two tricks that helped me with double pirouettes:
1) I used to have trouble keeping my spot for the second pirouette.

I just tried the 3, 2, 1 thing you said and did 3 pirouettes!!!
Omg thank u Katie the counting down really worked I was struggling to get my triple and now I can land a perfect 5
Great video Kathryn, could you please emphasize bit more on shoulders part, how to maintain them to be precise? Because for most dancers theory stops exactly where the turn begins.
To make it simple - what exercises you'd recommend to make the shoulders thing a habit?
i love youu i tried the tips once and i immediately did a double pirouette multiple timeess!!! 💗💗
I just got 3 pirouettes in a row and it’s been consistent thank you so much
This video helped me so much! Thank you so much Kathryn!
Thank youu for this! I always only do singles, but im trying more doubles and stuff.
This is sooooo helpful! Thank you so much, Katie!
Such a great video! I’m sharing it to my students!
Pirouettes
1) use your shoulders
2) SPOT
3) count backwards
4) mindset, go for it!
This year I am working really hard to get a clean pirouette and start on my doubles! My instructor thinks I'll be ready for pointe in a year so I am going to work really hard on my turns and clean placement

I have been looking for a video for how to do better Pirouettes, and this video helped sooo much!!!!!😁💞
Omg I never thought about my shoulders but this makes so much sense. I always try to somehow get myself round just with the arms and ankles, and leave my shoulders behind!
