Who are Led By Donkeys? | The Listening Post

  • After years of economic turmoil following Brexit, a calamitous response to COVID-19, and a constant stream of news about government corruption and ineptitude, many British voters have lost faith in the entire political class.
One guerrilla campaign group that has captured the public mood is Led By Donkeys. The Listening Post sat down with three of the co-founders to find out what motivates the group and how gaps left open by the British media have helped make the collective so successful.
    Featuring:
Oliver Knowles - Co-founder, Led By Donkeys
James Sadri - Co-founder, Led By Donkeys
Ben Stewart - Co-founder, Led By Donkeys

Odd that Al Jazeera didn’t explain the origin and meaning of “Led by Donkeys” -which has less impact and just sounds gimmicky if you don’t understand the context. It’s part of a phrase “Lions, led by donkeys” that was used in a number of European countries from the mid nineteenth century to describe the cause of military failures - ie the soldiers were great, their leaders were stupid.
It gained currency in the U.K. in the aftermath of WW1 when there was bitterness about the scale of casualties and the strong suspicion that much of it was the result of poor strategy by generals whose understanding of warfare was out of date. That was reinforced by a book in the 80s by the politician and historian Alan Clark “The Donkeys” about those generals.
But the underlying meaning remains - “a great people, led by incompetents”.

The most ignorant, uneducated and closed minded people that I know, are the ones who have chosen to turn a blind eye and close their ears to what is happening in Gaza. They don't want to know, they don't care. They like their blinders on for anything that doesn't serve their own lusts and desires in this world. If this sounds like harsh judgment on my part, I'm aware of that, "Judge not, for by the measure you judge, you shall also be judged." I'm very careful of not doing that. But in these days, in this situation, I can't imagine or remember a time or event where what is right and what is wrong is so painfully clear.

I think it is funny sad how we talk about "investigative journalism," as if any other journalism had meaning or value beyond stenography. Sports scores and stock prices and tornados and official press statements. Everything else requires investigation.

Of course it had to be Al Jazeera to explain Led by Donkeys 🫡❤️🇬🇧

Shame they're intent on banging on about Putin, which just shows they don't understand Geopolitics.

Love what you do, as someone who spent most of life in jobs trying to creatively campaign, but think it unfair on Donkeys. They don't deserve having these people being led by them 😉

LBD want our politicians to be honest and to act in the interests of the people they were elected to represent, and LBD hold up a mirror when our politicians fail to do that. They are doing a public service, one that our so-called "free press" ought to be doing, but which is in fact complicit.

@@ferozabismilla637 if a group posted on billboards in Qatar the number of dead workers on infrastructure projects or exposing the system whereby passports are held by employers, how long would they spend in prison?
