I just used the same tiller on a yard full of unexpected layers of gravel and first I wasn’t going to go through but the job needed to be done. I went ahead and afraid the blades weren’t going to to survive the .25 gravel acre. To my surprise, this animal survived and the job looks incredible!
So true it's a great tiller until you accidentally uncover a big rock or half a brick under the soil. Today we were out using this beast, hit half a brick got lodged in the tines. Took the brick out motor turned back on blades didn't spin. We took a closer look and the entire gear box split around the top all the way through. Was going to replace the gear box for $50 but the only one we could find was for the tj601e and we have the t603e so not quite sure if that would work. Going with the ryobi one instead. Buyer beware indeed.

Spent several hours at it with a mattock, and was exhausted, and barely hit 5% of the area I need to break up (600sf). TIA.
If you help the machine by soaking the ground for a week before the part of my backyard I pre soaked were the only parts I could get without the machine bouncing like it’s gonna break 😂😂😭 just soak the area really good beforehand and you should be fine
i tried something like this on soil with a lot of roots, it was no good. roots caught up in the blades took 20 mins to get roots unstuck from the blades
The only way to deal with hard clay and a bunch of rocks is to do hydro tilling. Do a search on youtube on hydro tilling. That's all he does on rocky soil. Works very well. Basically, use a pressure washer around 3,000 psi with a turbo nozzle. No matter how rocky or hard the ground is, it will be tilled very well.
You can’t always know what kind of rock, brick or roots you might run into. I’ve even found nails, rebar and old pieces of rotted railroad tie. It might be a good idea to probe around with a shovel every foot or so to see if you have any big obstacles before tilling.

Before you even started, I did not think this tiller could handle that type of soil. Your soil is very poor soil for gardening. Rocky soil, hard clay soil, etc., require something more powerful. I feel for you. I have bad soil here, too. Trying to dig and amend it is really hard. I do it all by hand.
Frightening that anyone would think this would be an appropriate application for this small format cultivator. Not sure where common sense is gone these days...
You need to rake the rocks out of the area first. The tiller will bring more to the surface. It's no different with a gas tiller. Seems an education in gardening is what's needed here.
@@DyLemmaOG this is what we have here in Carroll County Maryland. It gets worse as you get up around Gettysburg PA and Mechanicsburg PA. I thought it did well considering the rocks. But ,it's still something people will have to consider before buying.

The tiller bounced around and jumped a foot off the ground but it unearthed the rocks so I could remove them. I was amazed at what a great job it did and there wasn't a mark on the blades. I didn't go down more than about six inches but since most of the rocks were near the surface I don't think it would have been a problem.
It worked though. An it saved my arms and back from a lot of pain. Dug the entire stock tank pool with it and then some before it died. So, totally worth it in the end..

They are not made to brake up rocks. This is a great example of using a cultivater/tiller the wrong way.

I could be wrong but I believe the Ryobi is the same machine except for the handle.

Yeah that could happen to any tiller though. I've used gas tillers and it's happened to me before with roots
