I remember this very very clearly. In my old school days. They used to sell these dragon ball z geometry set cases. And inside there was this small tray. This featured and original art of trunks, goten and piccolo beaten up or hanging in there as though they just fought super buu. This was the 90s. And it looked legitimate art. But this never happened in the series of DBZ. Buu goes off to sleep and Gohan arrives. That was like Saiyan saga in buu. It was a show I enjoyed. I couldn't find such a cel online. But i can say 99% it was legitimate. like discarded story line.
I would’ve loved B-plot TOP-Arc, showing funny clips of Goten and Trunks and Marron, kicking poacher butt on 17’s Ranger Island watch. Especially if we get to see Marron’s fight debut as daughter of 18 and Krillin.
So getting Videl some water, being spanked by Beerus, headbutting Ginyu-Tagoma in the Dragon Balls, getting yoinked to planet Potafu and getting demolished by Brian Drummond's Vegeta (I'm still in awe that Funimation managed to do that), Kid Trunks thinking that Bulma was cheating on Vegeta with Future Trunks then fighting his future self afterwards, and a little bit exploring the island wasn't enough for you?

I honestly liked her groups gimmick of being magical girls but in dragon ball but after you’ve seen her once or twice you got the gist of it. There were so many characters that got almost no screen time whatsoever and here she is for the 10th time to do the same joke about love and stuff. Just annoying after a while.

I would had really like to see that mini arc, but i also get why they didn't make it, the ToP was such a high stake that adding in the middle of it a arc of Goten and Trunks protection animals and fighting Cell jrs would had throw off a lot of people release too much of the tension that the ToP was building up. But they should release it now as a OVA or something while we wait for the anime to comeback
I would have loved this sub plot just before the TOP started. Goten and trunks have been on the bench since the buu arc. Hopefully now that they’re grown they can be more relevant. The last few chapters that toriyama worked on for the dbs manga included goten and trunks and i makes me hopeful that those two will be added to future arcs

I’m torn. On one hand, anything to break up the monotony of the ToP would be nice. On the other hand, given how certain sections of it make people wish it would end sooner, sections dedicated to pausing the story would drive people insane.
In retrospect I think a lot of people would've liked it as a breather from the fightiny but from the pov of the show while it was airing I think everyone would've hated it

I think this also speaks volumes about their original idea for Jiren to be more of a Warrior of Justice, Super Hero type, not unlike Troppo and the Gammas.
I admire that the ToP doesn't get broken up for unimportant fluff outside of it. You enter the Thunderdome, and you stay there. I think that's powerful stuff. I would not be against getting a subplot with the boys to kickstart a DBS 2 or even retool it to have them fighting Moro's minions while protecting the island.
Considering how infamously rushed the production was for Super, it’s crazy to think that a whole subplot made it far enough into development to have a soundtrack composed for it only to get scrapped.
I agree. The soundtracks from time to time give us hints what unused material, like Jiren's theme being completely out of the character, until you read the original plans that Toei had for him and everything lines up
That second track feels a lot like one of the early dbs Broly tracks from the earth sections before the fight, makes a lot of sense because Sumitomo tends to reuse motifs like Bardock Falls sharing certain cues with a track from battle of gods when Beerus launches his sphere of destruction in space
Considering a lot of the fights outside of the ones Universe 7 engages in arent really impressive or attention grabbing, they might as well have done what the manga did and just have Kale wipe out a bunch of them before the kefla vs Goku fight and just cut away from it by showing trunks and goten who the audience actually cares about

Could be the case. hit music collection CD's back in the 90's were so rampant in Japan, these songs were all made in studio for DBZ obviously but an astonishing majority were never used in the anime. one key song that was used was spirit vs spirit. we are talking about a vast majority of Hironobu Kageyama-sama music that the world doesnt know about. you can find them all online thankfully for those wondering
Showing a basis for how Android 17 got so strong by showing the cell Jrs or just crazy monsters on the island gives the narrative a boost too, also could demonstrate how effective teamwork is
I would've preffered a sub plot like that over a lot of the long, drawn out battles that we got. Could’ve helped with the pacing a bit and kept things from feeling so repetitive.
They literally teased it when 17 left and then just threw in the aftermath during the credits. Granted it was very funny seeing how little threat the pochers were, but I would have loved this little break from the intense action and drama of the ToP. And would have given the main animators more time (though they absoultely COOKED at many points already)
Toei had already padded T.o.P. the hell out, but I think if Goten and Trunks at least had a compelling villain to face, and the nature preserve storyline didn't add on to the existing run time of the T.o.P. (thus filling in the blank gaps and overly long reaction shots that padded the fudge out of the middle) many have already suggested that Cell Jr's could fill that role, possibly. The direction I'd go with it though would be that a single surviving Cell Jr., drawn to Androids 17 and 18, ends up on 17's island. It's explained that for some reason it was the only one that didn't die in Gohan's SS2 counter attack, but was so heavily injured that it reverted to larval form to heal, burrowing underground just as Cell himself did, eventually emerging fully healed and at full strength... just as Kid Buu blows up the earth. He's able to use a ki shield to protect himself from the brunt of the blast but is still heavily damaged and sent hurtling into space. The Cell Jr is eventually able to right itself and sees the earth reconstitute, using whatever power he's got left, the Cell Jr. makes its way back, crashing in the ocean not far from 17's animal preserve. Again being caught in a state of life or death, the Cell Jr. Burrows under the preserve in order to absorb nutrients and replenish it's abilities. During the T.o.P. Goten finds the Cell Jr disturbing its sleep, and tries to make it his pet (at that point the Cell Jr. had managed to obtain its Pre-Imperfect beetle form) comedic Hijinx ensues.
A video about the production problems of the anime ToP would be interesting. From this to things like the scrapped moves of Damom and the swapping of Jiren and Toppo.
It'd be cool for like a Blu-ray release or ova through some eternal source that the 17's island arc were actually developed and watchable, bc TOP's pacing was already divisive at best but a Goten and Trunks arc would've been amazing

Yes, definitely! As admittedly cliché and buy the books for Dragon Ball as heroic kids protecting something would be as a story, that very long ass tournament of power could’ve used a break here in there. It felt like something was supposed to cut up that battle story, but it just didn’t show up. Probably wouldn’t fix the arcs main story problems I realize, but it would’ve been something different to see. That’s probably what the anime writers were planning until Toei (or even Toriyama IDK) vetoed that at the last minute to focus on the fighting as a stronger hook for ratings. It’s info lost to time most likely now, but perhaps one day, if Super ever does come back to TV maybe will have flashbacks as to what happened then.

A b-plot would’ve added variety and honestly might’ve eased up the workload during the arc (apparently the tournament of power was super expensive and super labor intensive because of the constant action) but the flip side is the tournament of power already drags so much and adding a b-plot would only make the pacing worse.
While I'm down with the idea of a subplot for Goten and Trunks, I think I'm glad they decided not to go with it during the runtime. The Tournament of Power, from the starting episode, where Goku gets blindsided by that one bandit and goes to train with Whis and sets in motion events that lead to the destruction of multiple universes, is almost half, if not more, of the entire run of Dragon Ball Super. Now imagine experiencing the ToP week-to-week and you know what they would do? The week after the first time we see Ultra Instinct for the first time, and we're left on that cliffhanger with Frieza saying he's reminded of Namek? Yeah. That's where they'd put the Goten and Trunks subplot. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. It would have been a meteor to shatter the pacing that was already a bit of a train wreck.

I absolutely believed they were setting up a filler side-story with Goten/Trunks/Marron on the island with that last episode(s) before the tournament. I was actually surprised they never went back to that plot point.
Goten is my second favorite character. He is just so chill, even more than Goku. If they ever let him shine on his own, instead of doing the buddy cop thing, playing second fiddle to Trunks, I would be elated.
I don’t think it would’ve been better with that subplot, the saga was already focusing on a lot of characters within the tournament already, so maybe like it they made episodes that took place during that time before showing us the T.O.P, then I think it would’ve been better.
Considering that alot of people were upset during the weekly release about the amount time some of the Characters in the T.O.P. receives, I think giving additional time to characters that aren't even in the Tournament and are doing something completely unrelated would have made them Furious.
I'm glad it was dropped, being laser focused on the tournament was what made ToP the best arc in Super by far, which was already plagued by too much filler like episodes and downtime, and also I'm glad they didn't adapted the Cell Jr thing because thats one of the dumbest asspulls they every did
I will always be disappointed that we never got a B-plot of them having wacky antics in the nature preserve, especially because they not only set it up, when when the boys say they protect Marron, 18 says something to the effect of "She's stronger than you think" and that never pays off AT ALL. I absolutely believed they were setting up a filler side-story with Goten/Trunks/Marron on the island with that last episode(s) before the tournament. I was actually surprised they never went back to that plot point.
That theme is actually pretty fun, and an episode revolving around what Goten and Trunks were up to would've been great imo.
goten, Trunks, and Marron on the island as a side plot is honestly something I would have loved to see.
they could still do this now with an OVA/ONA.

Goten is my second favorite character. He is just so chill, even more than Goku. If they ever let him shine on his own, instead of doing the buddy cop thing, playing second fiddle to Trunks, I would be elated.

I wished we got this B-Plot.
I don’t think it would’ve been better with that subplot, the saga was already focusing on a lot of characters within the tournament already, so maybe like it they made episodes that took place during that time before showing us the T.O.P, then I think it would’ve been better.
I wouldn't mind seeing Goten and Trunks mini adventure on the island. It would've been a nice break from the TOP.
Considering that alot of people were upset during the weekly release about the amount time some of the Characters in the T.O.P. receives, I think giving additional time to characters that aren't even in the Tournament and are doing something completely unrelated would have made them Furious.
I wish the DBS anime included the silly Mario Kart scene from the manga.
And we STILL dont have an instrumental for Ultimate Battle...

I'm glad it was dropped, being laser focused on the tournament was what made ToP the best arc in Super by far, which was already plagued by too much filler like episodes and downtime, and also I'm glad they didn't adapted the Cell Jr thing because thats one of the dumbest asspulls they every did
I will always be disappointed that we never got a B-plot of them having wacky antics in the nature preserve, especially because they not only set it up, when when the boys say they protect Marron, 18 says something to the effect of "She's stronger than you think" and that never pays off AT ALL. Like, c'mon...
They can still do it If DBS comes back

I wouldve taken a goten trunks mini arc if it meant cutting down the TOP by a 1/3rd or 1/4th of its run time.
That actually would've been cool I wish we had gotten that. It breaks up the story better
