Downwind Sailing in the FLORIDA KEYS (we hit a crab trap)

  • tulasendlesssum... We spend a half day fishing inshore by Indian Key and we had almost a complete failure (we caught 1 tiny mangrove snapper). The next day we picked up the hook and in great need of fresh water and supplies sailed straight for Marathon. It was a beautiful downwind run minus one small squall and about a billion crab pot buoys. tulasendlesssum...

    A lot of boaters aren't very familiar with the nuances of crabs pots so just in case I'll share a few things that'll possibly will help you avoid them. Waterman throw their pots in a long straight line (as straight as possible). This makes pulling them a lot easier. As they are pulling one and approaching the next, they've processed the prior and ready for the next (keep in mind in most cases 'straight line' providing someone unscrupulous hasn't robs one and leaves it out of position). So (unless it's just a few private owners pots) when you see a lot of them, just get an eye on the direction of their line and it's much easier to avoid them. Certainly while sailing and tacing could make that a little tougher but motor travel shouldn't be. Also the tide and possibly heavy wind will determine the direction of the floats. Due to not knowing how long a watermans lines are sort of dictates giving them a decent birth as to avoid wrapping around a prop, damaging an expensive prop and or motor and a waterman's living and and assets. Depending on the water conditions the floats will all be pulled in the same direction. So when you've eyeball ed the line the pots are in, the only other thing to do, is to determine which side of the pots the float is positioned. This then determines if you have to travel near their pots the best and only position is on the outside of the pots float opposite the line and pot - meaning the line is on the other side. Also if and when someone does entangle they are not entitled to the owners crabs and the pot should be return to its position in the line where it was removed from. For a large dead rise to have to manoeuvre their vessel out of this line to retrieve a moved pot - well it creates frustration and more work, fuel, time etc. And technically if the pot was destroyed (like in shallower water the prop hits a pot that is on a float and inline of the other pots (then the error is yours) then one should identify the markings on the floats and contact the waterman (identify the pot owners) to reimburse them for the pot. Hope this helps you and others to avoid them in the future or some other waterfarers. Happy Sails too you (The Tulas).

    Awesome video. I'm learning how to sail! Castnet action....nothing beats live bait. Try a live bait under a popping cork or even just a freelined bait with no weight so it can swim around. We catch our mangrove snapper here on wrecks and rigs. I have a few videos on my channel. We chum a little too...that gets them going.

  • @adventuringwiththekelleys
    @adventuringwiththekelleys 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Use a #2 hook with a 1/4 oz egg sinker and live shrimp near the mangroves. Let the sinker slide free and after you cast, leave the bale open until you get a hit and get you some mangrove snapper. You will likely catch grunts as well, but they aren't worth cleaning.
    Also you could use a 1/2 oz sinker and a #1 or 1/0 hook with pilchards you cast net with the same method. Nose hook the pilchards and you'll also get your limit on mangroves in no time. I have a sure place in Big Pine guaranteed to get you limited out on big mangroves, but about any place along a mangrove line, preferably a deeper cut will be a winner.

    Crap/lobster traps are a real pain and probably worse as you using your shallow draft to sail out of the channels , where they put the trap buoys !
    But of course that's why it's fun to have shoal draft! Great video , thanks for posting! Warren

    If you want to learn how to fish in that area checkout Key West Kayak Fishing Channel and South Florida Fishing Channel. Some tips, If you chum they will come, cast nest for pilchard near mangrove islands, chum for ballyhoo in deeper water and use a small hook tipped with bait or cast nest for them. I bet you and the Key West Kayak Channel could meet up and he will show the ways, you all could take out the dingy fishing. Or hook up with South Florida Fishing Guy, he seems to be a good dude.

    You need to get a spinnaker pole. Then you can fly your spinnaker on either side based on your down wind direction. It makes life easier and way more adjustments allowed to get the sail perfect downwind.

We thought it was snow lightning but it was a meteor ! It showed it's self over Detroit Michigan, and people in Windsor Ontario saw it we live about 20 miles from windsor in Essex and people saw it in Leamington, Wheatley, Wallaceburg Ontario It registered a magnitude 2 on the earthquake scale. Pretty cool ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! What can I say I'm Canadian !!! Happy sailing give Jetty a big hug and kiss from Canada !!!!!
