a good 2' 6" per minute that I find exciting and insightful. A rare combo I see in oscillatorsink nedrush mylarmelodies and .... that's it but my RAM's full. I got a kit too! Without the thrill of soldering, I'm gonna burn a candle nearby while I chuck it together, then apart and back together again the right way round hehe
Mine arrived today and I put it together. Sounds good, I immediately had some kind of dark ambient or industrial coming out of it the minute I turned it on. At first I had no idea what I did, and I had to read the manual to figure out all the switches and routing.
Just got mine delivered today, shipped direct from Athens. I too thought it was a bargain until I had to fork out an extra £70 gbp import taxes, thanks to our wonderfully successful referendum from a few years back... hopefully once I get it assembled I'll start to cheer up again! 😕
OUCH! Americans tend to slip by without any import duty paperwork or fees for most things under $800. We still have to pay sales tax (0%-9.56%), but it varies by location (state, county, and city!) and the purchaser is responsible for reporting it for international shipments. So... I don't think most people pay the tax. Let's says Americans buying synthesizers are getting a bit of a tax evasion discount.
Oh, now I know why I couldn't find these in stores in the USA that do have the Erebus reissue in stock. I built the Korg MS20M kit and it worked similarly. There was no soldering, just a lot of mechanical assembly and some board connections. The jack field part of the panel was a lot of work. I am very tempted to get one of these.
@@StephenMcLeod Following up, I caved and ordered a kit from Dreadbox. For others based in the US, shipping was a flat 30 euros and total price in dollars at the time of ordering was $331.50. I am not sure whether I will put it in one of my modular cases or in the shell that ships with it. For the price, that is in my opinion an excellent deal for a complete 2-oscillator synth voice.
I haven't A/B tested them directly side by side, but I don't notice any significant difference between the two anecdotally. It still sounds dark and great. The reverb is a bit different, but that will be a subjective thing!
cool - would love to see you A/B them- I actually wrote to Dreadbox and asked about it cuz i heard the V2 Nyx was different. They wrote that it’s the same with some minor tweaks like you said to the reverb.
When you said the reverb was a different circuit, where did you get that information from? I emailed Dreadbox on this, and they told me it was the same Splash circuit as the V1, they had just 'improved' it by making it brighter on higher time values and extended the decay times for a more lush reverb. I'm interested on your thoughts, with you having a v1 to compare it with. The character of the reverb on V1 sounded fantastic, so I'm cautious about buying the kit without knowing it will sound as good as the V1.
Well spotted, and apologies. I think I mis-spoke here. I checked back my e-mails and it does indeed appear that the reverb is a modified version of the original algorithm. It is a bit different, though I haven't done A/B testing to see how much, and I suspect that it is probably a subjective thing anyway...
@@StephenMcLeod Thanks for your response, I was close to pulling the trigger on this until I read your comment. After what they did to the reverb on the V2, I have been extra cautious, but it sounds like it s pretty close. The video 'Dreadbox Nyx: 10 Minutes of Sounds', is the best demo I have heard of the V1, and is what makes me want to buy it. I did n't know about the mini jack, midi changes, so your video was very helpful.

LOL people always say that to me because I have about this level of blinking rack stuff I leave on. PA speakers/amps can use a lot of power. But if you look at synth power specs they're usually under 10W. Even a huge JV-2080 is only rated at 13W. A hair dryer uses 100X more power.
My wife and I love the way you talk. Your accent, vernacular, the whole nine. Great video. And I'm definitely getting one of these kits. Thank you!
My secret weapon!!
@StephenMcLeod hahahahaha
Yeah it's pretty a Beasty accent.

I still don't really ha. I just play about until I find things I like.
Thinking about getting the NYX! Awesome demos man, this thing sounds friggin great! And I wasn't a Lego kid either! lol I was a Transformers kid!🐀
I could never figure out the dang Transformers either!!

Oh dang, that sucks - it's been a nightmare since Brexit for getting things in! It sounds awesome though so hopefully you'll love it.

I'm a big fan of the non-soldering DIY kits. They make things cheaper and are even... dare I say it... almost good fun to do.

How do you think it sounds compared to the original? I always loved the rich dark timbre from the v1…

No. I am pretty sure I didn't say that - the opposite entirely. :)
