7:49 Blackpink works primarily with Teddy. He was a former Kpop Idol and he grew up in America (Los Angeles I think) during the 90's. His beats are always so sick.

In reading the comments,I noted lots of suggestions for "Pretty Savage". It is an excellent choice for a live performance. I would choose the James Corden performance which has a live band accompliment giving that song that extra punch.

I'm 52 yrs old and grew up listening to the glory days of hip hop, r & b, 80's rock etc.
I got into kpop with a group called BIGBANG, that's a whole different rabbit hole but it's from the same entertainment company as BLACKPINK.
YG artists are more hip hop and performance, attitude based in my opinion.
The thing I liked about KPOP is they reference those influences of the western artists and create a sound that mixes all the genres of music that I grew up with.
Each entertainment company artists (YG / SM / JYP, etc) has their own distinct sound or style. I prefer YG but also like groups from the other companies as well. KPOP is a deep rabbit hole.
I suggest watching their NETFLIX documentary Light up the sky to get an insight into the group and the genre in general
Yes! The Netflix special will introduce you to Teddy, who is the mastermind behind Blackpink. Teddy also influenced Big Bang, who are seniors in the same company as Blackpink, and they are the group that most Korean people will credit for paving the way for making KPop what it is today. The big difference with Big Bang is that they wrote, produced, arranged all their own music (with influence from Teddy and others)
I'm right there with you. Another Gen Xer fan. And I agree, the different labels do tend to have a different sound.

I’m 49 & also grew up with hip hop, rnb & reggae…I’m really only a YG Artists stan due to the fact that they’re the closest to hip hop then any other agency in kpop. Found out about bigbang through Parris Goebels work and fell down the rabbit hole from there😆Then found Blackpink during AIIYL & found out 2 members had NZ connections and now 5yrs later I have all their albums lightstick been to their concert and looking forward to seeing them again in concert😆I know its mean but I never cringe when YG Artists sing or rap in English🤭
Eric has just stated the reason they are so popular they do not outshine each other to do their individual solo endeavours that is when they get to shine and show that they are more than what you see even though what you are seeing is nearly perfection but when you get to know them on a personal level which we have because we grew with them they are really just nice people you will never hear them say nasty things about anyone bit oh boy do they get hate spewed out at them it is none stop for 6 years.
Someone said the other day there is K POP girl groups and then there is BLACKPINK they have not released as a group for 18 months so you would think someone could have come along and snatched their crown except no one did and with in 7 hours of PINK VENOM release they smashed more records than ever. So BLACKPINK are UNIQUE in every way. LISA is THAI Jennie is Korean but lived in New Zealand for 5 years. Jisoo is straight up Korean girl Rose was born in New Zealand and emigrated to Australia and she has an Aussie accent.
I have loved watching Eric going from Horror that he is having to listen but within seconds accepts defeat and then joins us all in the rabbit hole lol GREAT CHANNEL GUYS GREAT CHANNEL

My whole life I've been living in rock/alternative genre. Because everyone around me listens to same particular songs that I've been listening to. But after watching BLACKPINK, it changed my music taste. It's like food. How can you enjoy different kind of food if you don't want to have a taste of it. Now, I love Kpop. I still love my past taste of genre but now, I'm more flexible with my music taste.
This is what is so fkn amazing with Blackpink. It is exactly the point you make about each member being able to shine and they do it to the stars and beyond. With respect to Spice Girls, Destiny's Child, and Pussycat Dolls, whilst all members were great only two or mostly one shined; Baby Spice and Melanie C, Beyonce and Nicole, respectively.
In Blackpink, you have 4 goddesses of equal power and weighting and different talents across singing, raping, dancing and stage presence; it's mind blowing how crafted all four are to become this global mega group.

I genuinely happy how honest they are. The fact they took a dive into something that they may and could of not enjoy and gave our girls a chance. There are other groups that they would enjoy to watch if they are comfortable with to do. Music is such a powerful tool to connect people together. Im looking forward when they listen to Shut Down and other songs.

This is the first song I heard from Blackpink. It really captured my attention and impressed me. It led me down the rabbit hole. And now I closely follow 3 other groups ( (G)I-DLE, Dreamcatcher, and Purple Kiss) and keep tabs on like half a dozen others (Mamamoo, Twice, Loona, Billlie, etc.). Lol did not expect this in my life trajectory. 😂

- "God's Menu" by *Stray Kids*
*FYI:* Kids audition and may be accepted into a training program by an Entertainment company. Besides school work, they are trained in vocals, dance, rap, stage presence, interviewing and languages. These kids are insanely talented and work their butts off. The best of the best are selected to form a group and given a position. *Main* vocalist, rapper, dancer or *Lead* vocalist, rapper, dancer there's even a position for visual (someone who fits Korean beauty standards). When a group is formed they usually sign a 7 year contract, during this time must follow strict rules: no dating, no alcohol, no smoking. Some companies are more controlling than others. In fact some companies let the groups write, compose and produce their own music. Hundreds of groups debut each year but only a handful are successful. No others are crazy successful as Blackpink and BTS.
I'll just caution that the belief that the company completely controls every aspect of the performers life and music is generally overstated and can vary by group. Lots of them drink, smoke, date, but the concern over their public image is much greater in Korea than it is in the west, so they must give the appearance of being perfect. Kinda "do what you want, but don't you dare get caught". Also artists have varying degrees of input their music and style. Groups like BTS and Stray Kids do a lot of their own writing and producing. Black Pink works with a consistent team that they work together with to create their performance and approach (it's give and take). There are other groups out there that are ruled with an iron fist and just do what they are told without any say as you indicated. But the belief in the west that Kpop is nothing but a bunch of pretty robots doing as they are told undermines the artistry in the genre and makes people not take it seriously.
Why haven't these guys had more subscribers? They're so genuine! I really like their BLACKPINK reactions! I think you guys should try their live performances. Watch their Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du Coachella! You'll be blown away by these women live!
Blackpink is not your typical Kpop group. They have their own sound and they do not miss, not a single bad song. Teddy their producer is a genius.

I was turned onto Kpop with this group, they are amazing. Other groups to react too, Mamamoo ( 4 women that have been around longer than Blackpink with amazing harmonization), KARD (the only mixed Kpop group, 2 men, 2 women , have a huge following in latin american cultures), Jessi (born in NJ raised in NY city, moved to Korea on her own at 16, the BAD girl of Kpop that tests the censorship in Korean culture.

Your point is something I really like about them too: no one outshines the others. Each one brings their A game, nobody's playing, but it's a group effort. Looks to me like this is one of my criteria to stan a group bc the only other KPop group I follow is this way too.

This was the first MV i saw in 2021 for kpop and I was in SHOCK. I couldn't believe the flawless transitions from pop to rap and from korean to english. I binged all their videos, including the Netflix documentary and have been in love ever since! I love the solo stuff too, it gives them that ability to have the best of both worlds.

This is one of my fav songs out of many many fav songs from BlackPink. Not just sick beat kicking in, the paradox, rhymes and word playing in their lyrics are insane. What is the most amazing thing is that everything totally makes sense in both Korean and Eng!! You still get the pretty much same thrills in both. As if it’s written to be translated in multi languages from the beginning. BlackPink is just The total package that is not be replaceable. Now time to move onto “Ice cream” or “Love sick girls” 🫶🏻

Lisa started her Lili channel because her true love is dancing and with this channel she can do that. The influence she has is unreal if you decide to watch the dancing go for it but be warned film 3 is 1minute and 10 seconds long and has turned most males into blubbering messes. I can't watch them. The Movie which she did she dances to a song called Tomboy by Destiny Rodgers an American artist and that song went from not that known to a huge global hit.
LISA is the biggest IDOL of them all. She has over 80 million Instagram followers. Queen of sold out if she wears it they buy it and I mean everything she is global ambassador for Celine who was known but not like Dior or Chanel but she came on board and they had a rise of 90% every thing she modelled or wore was sold out she is global ambassador for many Bulgari Jewellery she wore a necklace by them for the VMA's which she won soloist track LALISA that necklace was 80 thousand dollars and within two hours the necklace had sold out. Lisa and Jennie and Jisoo and Rose are walking goldmines and are all ambassadors for the big name brands.
They are very talented and very beautiful but their biggest attraction is they are all very nice very polite young ladies and all of them are multi lingual Lisa is now learning her 7th language.

I finally understand the meaning of this song since its come out. It references being in a relationship or situationship where youre obssessed with this person and even though you know its bad for you, the person comes around again and makes you fall back into them and forget everything you realized previously and you ignore that and chase them again. The song basically is about finally pushing yourself to end something that you know is bad for you and finally being honest about the truth of the situation and no longer lying to yourself and letting yourself fall into again but rather holding yourself accountable.
