The "Shin" of godzilla is wordplay on the movie "Shin Godzilla" Shin is Japanese means "God" or "Deity" basically calling the Godzilla of that movie a higher being.
He's simultaneously saying "you can't measure up to be physically or spiritually"

      "kami" means God
"Shin" means "True" or "New" in Japanese. It was "Shin Godzilla" because it was a new take on the chaaracter, that wasn't connected to the original 1954 film.
Godzilla/ Gojira is a mix of the words "Gorira" (Gorilla) and "kujira" (Whale)..

"In 1933, Giuseppe Zangara attempted to kill then President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt but injured and killed Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak. He was convicted of Cermak's murder and sentenced to death. Due to Florida law, an inmate could not be housed in a cell with an inmate who was awaiting execution so a prisoner awaiting execution was to be held in a separate waiting cell. Raiford Prison, where Zangara was being held, already had one prisoner waiting in their "death cell" so the waiting area was expanded to a row of cells, becoming a "Death Row"- from wikipedia. The original king kong movie was also made in 1933.

6:43 It wasn't just Donkey Kong. Yes, Donkey means "stubborn" or "ass", but also, in 1983, Universal, (the company behind King Kong at the time, now a Warner Bros. property), attempted to sue Nintendo over allegations that DK was trademark infringement, but ended up losing the case. Not only did they lose, but the court found a King Kong game that Universal licensed was actually in violation of Nintendo's copyrights. Thus Nintendo "making an ass" out of Universal and the King Kong franchise. At least 40 years later, both Universal and Nintendo wound up collaborating with Super Nintendo World at Universal's Theme Parks, and working on the Mario movie (and possibly more Nintendo movies) together as a way of saying "No hard feelings."

    • @goofusmaximus1482

That triple entendre ghidorah bar from Godzilla was insane. First it was a rebuttal to Kong's "What's Kraken?" bar since there is a comic out there where he destroys the Kraken. "...The beast the beast from 20000 FATHOMS couldn't FATHOM." Then he took out Iron Man, Thor and Destroyah (destroy ya), and then took out Ghidorah with his 3 heads. Just a whole bunch of triples on triples. The cherry on top was rapping that in triple time. Kong ain't recovering from this.

Iron Man and Thor can also be Ferrum and Thorium, and it goes back to his “Oh you shouldn't try to talk about the atom...”. And also, the "Bigger than Bridges" a reference to Godzilla's iconic scene when he's next to the Golden Gate Bridge, but also, Jeff Bridges was in the 1976 King Kong but it has mixed reviews and he also played in the movie The Big Lebowski, which is what he's more well known to than his role in the King Kong movie. As a bonafide Godzilla junkie (complete with $2k in Godzilla tattoos), the references in this battle were absolutely not the casual, wiki-researched material I was expecting. There were some DEEP cuts. The “ass-brain” line was a reference to Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 where they tried to kill him by destroying a secondary brain in the lower spine. The “you didn’t get cooler in the 90’s” was partly a reference to the ‘98 film (as evidenced by the Ferris Bueller bar) but was ALSO a reference to Godzilla vs Destoroyah in ‘94 where he died by melting down (supported by the “destroy ya” line). The “recycled crap like All Monsters Attack” might have been the deepest cut though. Also called “Godzilla’s Revenge”, it was probably the weakest entry because of Minilla but ALSO because of the heavy use of stock footage. This battle was 100% written by another lifelong Godzilla fan, there’s no doubt in my mind.

The Frankenstein reference is that in the original Godzilla vs King Kong, the movies script was originally going to be King Kong vs Frankenstein, but after securing the rights to Kong, they were unable to obtain the rights to Frankenstein's Monster. So the elements of the movie like the lightning striking Kong to revive him were originally meant for Frankenstein, got given to Kong and they put Godzilla in the movie. This is also why Kong won the fight, cause he was supposed to triumph over Frankenstein's Monster.

One reference you might have missed is "rubbing on a double bass." The original filmmakers used the strings of a double bass to create the sound effect for what would eventually become Godzilla's iconic roar.
And you're mostly correct about the Frankenstein reference. There was an old Toho movie where Godzilla fought a giant Frankenstein monster, but when the plans for the sequel fell through, they swapped the Frankenstein monster out for King Kong (who gets a power-up from electricity, due to a carry-over from the original script). This also led to a spin-off/sequel movie, "War of the Gargantuans."

Yeah, I can see why Gojira could handle actually housing the atomic breath, as Gojira was pretty much turned into an organic living nuclear reactor, so naturally he would evolve to not only be able to be unaffected by the ill effects of radiation, but also be able to be “supercharged” by additional radiation. Kong on the other hand only fucking lives because of plot armor.

Another reference you missed was when Rampage was brought up (i think it was in Godzillas first verse if not KK's), it was referencing what you mentioned but it was also referencing a movie that came out in about 2018ish which Dwayne Johnson starred in where he befriended a large very king kongescque Gorilla

But that’s the thing, primates have needed to evolve for hundred of thousands of years, and from what I remember, Gojira was already large, about the height of a tall apartment building, and that was before he got used to walking on land, so he was hunched over, that being before the effects of the ‘radiation’. He was big in the sea, probably bigger than blue whales. However Gojira grew short arms because of his transformation into an amphibian. The arms haven’t grown larger, simply because there’s no need for them to, he’s just that powerful.
So I can’t really give Kong that bar.

Specifically the land of the rising sun, and nuclear weapons, or in this case atomic weapons, pretty much create a small sun as many people put it, and it was the atomic bombs that caused Gojira’s transformation, so a little more depth with the bar than just on the surface.

So here’s the story: When Toho got the rights to King Kong the planed movie was King Kong vs Frankenstein. This wasn’t actually the literary one but a character from a different Toho movie that made giant monsters. For issues with rights that switched out Frankenstein for Godzilla. It’s also important to remember that this was only the 3rd Godzilla movie ever and it had so little impact outside of Japan at that point that the second Godzilla movie wasn’t even called Godzilla but Gigantus the Fire Monster.

The hardest bar I havnt seen anyone comment on or point out is when Kong says in his first turn that he is “the 8th wonder of the world AND the word when I rhyme”
The 8th word that he rhymes is when he says “the word.” He is calling himself “the word”, or as many people would say, “God”
    Kong’s rhymes in order
    1. “Pretty” (rhymes with “Lizze”)
    2. “Arms” (rhymes with “bars”)
    3. “Barkley” (rhymes with “movie”)
    4. “Fuji” (rhymes with “movie” and “Barkley”)
    5. “Health” (rhymes with “yourself”)
    6. “RKO” (rhymes with “death row”)
    7. “ToHo’s” (rhymes with “RKO” and “death row”)
    8. “The word” (rhymes with “the world”)

The term death row was first used around the time when kong’s first film was released. Prior to that the term death cell was used. This was because most prisoners convicted of murder were isolated individually by cell from other prisoners. In 1933 however, a high profile criminal convicted of attempting to assasinate president Roosevelt was placed in a cell with another criminal convicted of murder. The term was then coined death row because there were multiple murderers sharing cell space.
