  • My activation camera was a little out of focus, sorry about that. Another CW POTA activation as I slowly get better at CW. I gave a little more attention to the setup today. The handful of RVs parked in the lot next to me were aiding in my practice as they gave me a little noise to deal with. I hope this gives some practice material and motivation for those that are still learning like myself.
    Today's Setup:
    Homebrew linked End-Fed Half Wave (Inverted-Vee)
    Jackite 31 Foot pole
    Xiegu G90
    CWMorse SP4
    RG-316 Coax
    Campstools
    This is my CW Pota Activation on 10 Meters. The video was getting long, so I'm chopping the 15 meter portion to a different video.
    Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.

    Great fist especially under the circumstances (windy, unstable stool and table) and I would say a tad more than 16 WPM. Excellent video!
    Er..correction. I was listening at 1.5x speed from a previous video but, still in all, wonderful fist and used of the paddles.

    Fun to watch, would be nice to have the coms transcribed. Auto closed captions should be able to do it. Get on that youtube.

      Wouldn't that be neat? Language option: International Morse Code. I've tried going through and typing out the captions for everything. Boy was that a time sink. Ended up quitting shortly after starting that endeavor.

    Glad to see how well the fence worked as a counterpoise. You hit a lot of states in short order! I enjoy your relaxed pace very much. and am going to look into getting a set of CW Morse paddles. 73 de Tim KE6PMA

      The fence worked extremely well. Or maybe it was propagation in general... Who knows? It certainly didn't hurt anything, that's fur sure. Thank you, I go as quick as I can, haha. Thanks for watching!

    Well done. I am getting ready to do my first (in a couple years) CW activation so watching this is good practice!

      That made me chuckle. I had a long journey to finally getting on the air too. I was discouraged when I couldn't find any stations going slow enough for me to feel comfortable contacting. One day I realized that the only way I could find someone going my speed was to be the one going my speed. CW hook was set the next day, and I've hardly touched a mic since.

    just found your channel thanks well done vid -- i also have the G90 and the CW morse SP-4 paddle which i understand Larry N0SA designed and manufactured briefly and then sold the rites to CW Morse - a real nice lil paddle - i did change the 2 springs to heavier ones (from a harbor frieght spring kit) just for my heavy handed preference - i like the first one so much i bought a spare -- and The G90 is an awesum rig - thanks again 73 Brian VE7JYD

      From what I've heard, the original N0SA paddles are highly prized and difficult to buy. This is the closest we can get, I guess. It really is a nice paddle. I can't stand shuffling stuff from kit to kit, so I might have to pick up another at some point. Can't go wrong with a G90. A memory keyer and it would be A++. Thanks for watching!

    Is it probable to get an RF bite when not grounded and when using battery power as opposed to house power?

    • @CoaxAndCampstools
      @CoaxAndCampstools  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't comment much on probable vs improbable, but I would assume that grounding everything would certainly help mitigate it. That way the voltage built up on the ground side of the antenna (coax, radials, radio chassis, and key in my example) has somewhere to go. The only time I've been burned was when I was tailgate portable, so my whole setup was isolated from ground by the tires of the truck. My antenna used the truck as the ground radials which left some common mode current seeking ground, which it found through the set screws on my 3d printed key to my fingers and into the ground. Adding the choke put some inductance on my coax that trapped (repulsed? not sure on terminology) the current running down the outside of the cable and stopped it from getting to me. I don't know if house power would increase or decrease the likelihood vs batteries TBH. I'm comfortable in saying that I probably wouldn't have been shocked if I had dropped a ground spike from the truck.

      @@CoaxAndCampstools Well, I think you answered the question well. From you experience, it does seem like it is possible and probable to get RF burn even when using batteries and not grounded. Thanks for the insight.

  • @johnbspringer
    @johnbspringer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You did not show your grounding cable. Do you need one the prevent RF burn? I get zapped unless I ground my radio.

    • @CoaxAndCampstools
      @CoaxAndCampstools  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you put a common mode current choke on your coax? I have grounded my radios when portable zero times. The only time I've been burned was using a quarter wave vertical out of my truck bed with about 5' of coax. Got me through the set screws on my 3d printed key nonetheless. As soon as I threw a choke on the coax it went away. I get about 23 dB suppression with my chokes, and that took care of it. That's the only time I've experienced an RF burn. Different radio too. IC-705 I think.

      @johnbspringer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CoaxAndCampstoolsno. just coax straight to vertical. no problem after I grounded the radio. I will research your choke approach. thanks.

      @johnbspringer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After further research, I think the reason folks do not get the RF burn on POTA, SOTA, mobile etc, is because they are using batteries and not house current.

    • @CoaxAndCampstools
      @CoaxAndCampstools  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had to check the radio, it's Iambic-B. Just poor sending and an issue I have with dropping dits on strings of 3 or more. I struggle with Vs and 4s the most. Also send my fair share of "4NN". This activation was particularly difficult for my sending. Just one of those days.
